Just about to pop in for a nose, as I'd never been inside before. The library, accesed via the entrance beneath the brown sign, has had a lengthy revamp, costing approx £55M, I gather. Last time I was in the vicinity, at least 18 months ago, it was all hidden from view by hoardings.
The contrast of old and new is very well done. What's wonderful, is that you can climb all the stairs [lifts available too] to the roof for a free view!
the destruction of Barnsley Central Library is almost complete. Hard not to see it as act of anti-intellectual vandalism. There is meant to be a replacement but it is years off being built and relies in part on the vagaries of retail development to be built so I'm not holding my breath . It all looks like one step away from the noble traditions of public education and civic pride that libraries embodied.
The new Library of Birmingham taken from Centenary Square. The new Library of Birmingham was opened in September 2013 by Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani Schoolgirl who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban. The Library replaced the old Central Library that was by the Town Hall. It is the largest public library in the UK. It holds numerous important collections such as Britain's most important Shakespeare collection.

Description of work: Located between the Vistula River and the Warsaw Escarpment on a culturally and ecologically significant site, the library's design is based on a "city in the woods" concept and was the winning entry of the 1993 design competition for the building. The library is built within the existing topography of the landscape (two levels below grade and two levels above grade) and is constructed of reinforced concrete, steel, glass, and pre-patinated copper. The building's 5,000 square meter green roof is watered by a stormwater irrigation system and contains four thematic gardens, each of which is surrounded by massive skylights and connected by steel bridges. The roof gardens provide expansive views of the city and are integrated into the adjacent University Public Garden by grand staircases and linear water channels. "The library's interior is divided both functionally and physically by a glass enclosed street arcade, which serves to separate and connect the library stacks andleased commercial space. The copper facade along Dobra Street displays eight [4x7 meter] copper tablets containing six different alphabets, mathematical and chemical equations and musical and literary concepts." The Queens Library in Flushing is a beautiful building. I was surprised to find that this isn't the main library. Still, it's a large one and well used.
It was a gray day, so even my new Zeiss lens couldn't make this look bright and cheerful, but it is sharp.
I like this building a lot and have sketched it a couple of times from the outside. It's quite tiny on the inside so it's tough to find a good spot to sketch. Which is too bad because there are some nice details on the inside. Also, there isn't much seating so there aren't many people inside.
Watson Library on the campus of the University of Kansas.
From KU's website:
Opened Sept. 11, 1924, this collegiate Gothic-style limestone building was named for Carrie M. Watson, an 1877 and 1880 alumna who was university librarian 1887-1921. It was designed by George L. Chandler and State Architect Ray L. Gamble."
