The new Library building in Birmingham is stunning, both inside and out. You are able to ascend right to the roof on the 7th floor - the final journey in a glass lift - where you can look out across the City to the surrounding coutryside. There is also a herb garden on the 4th floor. Hopefully this set of photos gives you a taste of the building and the wonderful veiws of the surrounding buildings.

A great group of kids showed up at the library for the annual Freaky Friday party for kids who read at least 20 books in the Summer Reading Club and attend a certain number of the library's Summer programs. They were entertained with games and food and everyone got to take home a free book at the end of the night.

The sign above the door says - " This building erected by the Corporation of Liverpool was , by a resolution of the Council dated 6th October 1875 , ordered to be named The Picton Reading Room in recognition of the valuable services rendered by James Allanson Picton Esquire JP . FSA . in his capacity as Chairman of the Public Library , Museum and Gallery of Arts Committee , which position he had then occupied for a period exceeding a quarter of a century . "

A new library is due to open on the same site in 2008.

The big books. Especially the three volume spider set, which is still the definitive set, if a little dated now. Anything that doesn't fit on the first shelf.

The public library in Devonport Guildhall, opened in 1986 and closed in February 2009.

The library was located in the former Devonport Mortuary. The white tiled walls being part of a listed building, the shelving was all freestanding.

The floor in the main room was levelled - underneath is the original sloping floor which removed the blood during autopsies.

Head of Children's Services Gretchen Hams demonstrates the browsable stacks of books for pre-readers up to age 5. Books are organized by broad categories, and even color-coded so that even preschoolers can easily find the types of books they love. Favorite non-fiction picture books such as fairy tales, transportation and animal titles for young listeners are no longer buried in the stacks with research titles for older readers.

Established in 1909, the Toronto Reference Library initially operated from another building on College Street. In the late-1960s, management of the library was assumed by the Metropolitan Toronto Library Board. Believing the space in the original structure to be inadequate, Raymond Moriyama was tasked to find a new site, and was later commissioned by the board to design a new building for the site. The new building was opened to the public in 1977 as the Metropolitan Toronto Reference Library, and the library continued to operate under that name until 1998, when it reverted to its original name. The building underwent renovations and expansion from 2009 to 2014.

Freaky Friday is the culmination of the Summer programs for the Tweens and Young Adults. They get to come to the library after hours on Friday and have pizza, games and win prizes! This year was a blast!

i went to the library to work.

Music cannot be avoided on the way to reference! The reference desk was once backed by a tall shelving unit, which blocked the view to e-reference (specialized databases) and the Southwest Collection. Dave Genesy recommended the removal of several such barriers, opening up the library's interior spaces and making the most of the natural light pouring in through the north-facing windows.

I don't know what prompted me to put my camera on this black book. It must have been the "depth" of shelves. The "vanishing point" ends around the middle of the shot. The shot can be divided into three equal horizontal thirds (rule of thids).

In 1900 when Miss Mary Eliza Scranton offered the Madison Library Association the use of a new, completely furnished, library building which she had built on the corner of Wall Street adjoining her family’s old home. The offer was accepted, books moved in, and in 1901 the Association dissolved and the E.C. Scranton Memorial Library was incorporated.

The original library building was designed by Henry Bacon, an eminent New York architect who later designed the Lincoln Memorial. A New York firm of “contracting designers” was in charge of the architecture, construction, decorations and furnishings, the total cost of which was about $30,000.

The library was added to in 1989 and again in 2020 (along Wall St.)
