Fort Riley, Kansas, was a sprawling establishment housing 26,000 men and encompassing an entire camp, Camp Funston, within its 20,000 acre boundaries. Soldiers often complained about the inhospitable weather to be found at the site: bone-chilling winters and sweltering summers. And sandwiched in between these two extremes were the blinding dust storms. Within the camp were thousands of horses and mules that produced a stifling nine tons of manure each month. The accepted method of disposing of the manure was to burn it, an unpleasant task made more so by a driving wind. On Saturday, March 9, 1918, a threatening black sky forecast the coming of a significant dust storm. The dust, combining with the ash of burning manure, kicked up a stinging, stinking yellow haze. The sun was said to have gone dead black in Kansas that day.
Some, looking for a point of origin of the so-called Spanish influenza that would eventually take the lives of 600,000 Americans, point to that day in Kansas. Shortly before breakfast on Monday, March 11, the first domino would fall signaling the commencement of the first wave of the 1918 influenza. Company cook Albert Gitchell reported to the camp infirmary with complaints of a "bad cold." Right behind him came Corporal Lee W. Drake voicing similar complaints. By noon, camp surgeon Edward R. Schreiner had over 100 sick men on his hands, all apparently suffering from the same malady.
Any evidence of an influenza epidemic in the spring of 1918 was furnished by those institutions that kept a close eye on those under their watch: the military and prisons. In April and May over 500 prisoners at San Quentin in California came down with the same condition that had struck soldiers at camp Riley, as well as camps Hancock, Lewis, Sherman, Fremont, and several others. Influenza spreading amongst men living in close quarters did not particularly alarm the public health officials of the day. Little data existed at the time to indicate a sizable spread among the civilian population. Besides, the nation had bigger matters on its mind. There was a war to win.
In the spring of 1918, it appeared that America's involvement in the fight against Germany was beginning to make a difference. In March 84,000 American "dough-boys" set out for Europe; they were followed by another 118,000 the next month. Little did they know they were carrying with them a virus that would prove to be more deadly then the rifles they carried. While sailing across the Atlantic, the 15th U.S. Cavalry incurred 36 cases of influenza, resulting in six deaths. By May, the killer flu had established itself on two continents, and was still growing.
The influenza of 1918 showed no bias in its approach to the combatants in World War I: men from all sides were sickened and killed. Great Britain reported 31,000 influenza cases in June alone. The flu proved such a leveler of men that war plans were altered. Attacks that had been painstakingly planned had to be postponed due to a shortage of healthy men. By early summer, the flu extended its reach beyond the U.S. and western Europe. Numerous cases of influenza were reported in Russia, North Africa, and India. The Pacific Ocean provided no protection as influenza spread to parts of China, Japan, the Philippines, and down to New Zealand.
By July, the influenza of 1918 had left its mark globally. Tens of thousands had fallen ill and died. This first wave was a mere prelude, however, to the perilous path the flu would cut when it reappeared in full force that fall.

Dominic "Dom" Santiago is a COG soldier. Dom was the younger brother of Carlos Santiago and son of Eduardo Santiago and Eva Santiago. Born in a Pre E-Day Sera, he grew up listening to his father's war stories and going to school with Carlos and Marcus. Dom later joined the army as a commando and took part in Operation Leveler. Years later Dom freed his best friend Marcus Fenix from Jacinto Maximum Security Prison and recruited him into Delta Squad. His battlefield intensity is rivaled only by his loyalty to Marcus. Dom's friendly and outgoing nature lets him form relationships with factions throughout Sera, including the Stranded. He's always quick with a joke, but Dom's amiability masks an inner conflict that makes the war against the Locust far more personal.

Here is the "Pladder" in action with my Nikon D90 mounted on the Manfrotto 488RC2 ball head and the Manfrotto 438 Leveling Head ready to be used shortly.
Some observers might notice that in this shot, my camera is NOT mounted on my pano-head, but instead is on a Manfrotto ball head...just FYI.. The top section of the Werner ladder has TWO 3/8-16 bolts mounted through the very convenient holes, so each of those can be used for tripod, etc. mounts. In this case, the one on the left has a Manfrotto 438 leveling base attached for use later in the Pano Shot...

Peterbursg, Ohio. Jeff's backyard. "Morning are great levelers" is an aphorism of mine. This morning wasn't in regards to the marital strife we witnessed and in which we were caught in the middle. Not that the fight was still going on - Jeff was nowhere to be seen, his vehicle gone from the driveway - but the lingering and unsettling atmosphere of it clung to the grass and our tents like the dew that wouldn't evaporate fast enough.
Weird times. Couldn't go into the house to use the bathroom. Behind me is an FAA-approved landing strip. One of Jeff's neighbors is a pilot.

This is on Dec 1st, 23rd Day of Demonitization (banning of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes). You're limited to Rs. 2000 per day and that's given out as one single note! In South Bombay, you can get very few things for that amount as a western tourist and you can stretch it very far as a local, but you're constrained by the fact that not everyone has change for the large denomination note

A careful scan of this eroded bank will show the horizontal layering of deposited volcanic ash that accrued from a nearby (~40 miles) super volcano more than a million years ago. It was spewing ash for about a half million years and this deposit is at least 60 feet thick. The erosion of the cut is aided by the great mountain leveler: gravity.

Masonic Working Tools:
In each of the Degrees of Freemasonry, certain implements of the Operative Art are consecrated to the Speculative Science, and adopted to teach as symbols lessons of morality. With these the Speculative Freemason is taught to erect his spiritual Temple, as his Operative predecessors with the same implements so constructed their material Temples. Thus they are known as Working Tools of the Degree. They vary but very slightly in the various Rites, but the same symbolism is preserved. The principal Working-Tools of the Operative Art that have been adopted as symbols in the Speculative Science, confined, however, to Ancient Craft Masonry, and not used in the higher Degrees, are the Twenty-four-inch Gage, Common Gavel, Square, Level, Plumb, Skirret, Compasses, Pencil, Trowel, Mallet, Pickax, Crow, and Shovel.
On the Level:
The Level is a tool used in construction.
Just about every Mason hears the phrase ―On the Level
when they attend their Lodge meeting. It is one of most basic ideas put forth in Freemasonry.
At it‘s core on the level indicates that an object is the same distance from a common surface no matter where you measure from.
This is critical in construction to make sure that a house or structure
will stand. That the floors do not slope and things will not roll or slide across the floor. Generally in construction when something is level, it has more to do with the ground
on which it stands and gravity as a whole.
In Freemasonry a level not only refers to things that are of equal distance from a common surface, it refers to many other things.
The first thing it refers to is what the phrase most commonly translates to outside of the fraternity. When someone is ―on the level‖ they are honest, they deal with someone fairly. This also can have another allusion most commonly held with one of the Cardinal Virtues of Freemasonry: Justice. The balance scale, that is a common symbol to indicate Justice, has a level as it‘s core element.
With both sides being equal, a balance scale will be level across indicating that both sides are equal.
The second thing, is that it is a reminder that we are all equal in the eyes of death,
often referred to in Masonry as the ―Great Leveler.‖ It means that death comes for us all, no matter what station we have attained in life, no matter what we attained as status
in the fraternity, we will all look upon the face of death. It is a reminder for all of us
that we are no different from the person walking beside us on the street or standing
next to us in our lodge room.
Third and most importantly, it is a reminder to Freemasons that, no matter what we do inside the fraternity, no matter what position we hold or have held, we have
a responsibility to our brothers and to the world to treat each others as equals.
No one person is more important than another in the fraternity, even when someone
briefly achieves the position of Most Worshipful Grand Master, the highest position
and leader in any Grand Jurisdiction.
All must be held to the same standards and all must be treated as equals.
It is for all these reasons that most Lodges will end their meeting
with everyone standing on the same surface. It symbolizes that we are all standing together equally and no one, no matter their position, is exempted from standing shoulder
to shoulder with their Brethren.
One of the best examples of on the level comes from an Installation Ceremony. Bob McBride. MSPub / DDGM / Peterborough District‟s Electronic Beacon / 2020-12-01, Volume Fourteen, Issue 04
In it is stated, ―From the ranks you have risen and to the ranks you shall return.‖
It is a reminder that some of us may be called to lead from time to time, Page 56 but we must always remember that we are still ―on the level‖ with our Brethren.
