I got the news this morning that a former Professor of mine had died. It was kind of a coincidence as i had just been thinking of the man two days ago while walking between buildings, following the same path I had some thirteen years ago.
This man had been my classics professor in college. He was well into his seventies and it was my firm belief that he was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's at the time. He always wore the same plaid tweed jacket with leather patches sewn on the elbows and his white hair was always slightly disheveled despite the generous amount of grecian.
It was a 6:30 - 9 pm class in the spring which meant that most of it was spent in this dark, musty lecture hall and it was dark when you got there, and dark when you left. There were a lot of students in there, it was one of those requirements that everyone needed and it quickly became apparent that many of us had waited far too long to file add/drop.
Anyway, I remember spending weeks and weeks in complete boredom, the only amusement being this professor and his antics...how late would he oversleep today? Would it be tweed and corduroys? Maybe the red slacks? Think Bob Barker teaching a lecture...
Then one day I woke up. I stopped making it into a game and paid attention. Maybe I had realized that I was in fact paying for the privilege to be there, or maybe old Roscoe was just on that day - but he got through to me.
It was during Book Two of Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War, and this professor came alive. It was like a moment of clarity - the tweed was thrown asunder, the white whisp of hair brushed to the side and old Roscoe, all 6'4 of him stood there at that lectern and delivered Pericles' Funeral Oration better then Pericles' could have himself. By the end I swear he was crying. It was amazing and inspiring. It was an awakening.
"So died these men as becomes Athenians. You, their survivors, must determine to have as unaltering a resolution in the field, though you may pray that it may have a happier outcome."
Anyway, I was thinking of this the other day as i was walking between two buildings, like I had those years ago when I had at first dreaded my classics class...then thoroughly been inspired by it. And so it was sad to read about old Roscoe's passing this morning, because he did make a difference in my life - even if he did at times seems like Bob Barker from a Depends commercial...

Carondelet Park St. Louis City on 8/8/13 (CM) - Wow, there were so many juveniles mixed in with the adults. I knew I better get photos to document these birds and their numbers. They are escaping in this photo from loud machines being moved past them. The birds were constantly relocating as these machines (bulldozers and levelers, etc.) were used to work on the Riverfront Trail. The birds had obviously nested in the area under construction. I think the fledglings fledged just in time. They are flying over Jewelweed. At one point when a large group was all together on the ground, I counted 63 ETS.
