... renovating an old house name sign. I decided to switch from painting to routing the lettering. This started well, until old age caught up with the insulation in my dear old router, and it burned out (that's a very characteristic smell, which I remember well from repairing pumps). So, on our way over to see the goats, we stopped in Axminster and I picked up a new router: more than double the power of the old one, a great deal easier to steer, and about the same price after twenty years - not bad going, I thought.
So this is part way through the job. The main outline of the D is cut, but I've not yet smoothed out the bumps in the curve. The font is a bit odd, but we worked it up from lettering on an old record cover; it matches a frieze around one of our rooms.
The marvellous new book Ghost Signs - A London Story by Sam Roberts & Roy Reed has at last given me some info on this obscured signage on Tottenham High Road. "It's likely that the sign advertised a branch of J.Sainsburys that was here at No. 422/4 from 1901 - 1968 & was almost certainly painted before the construction of the building in front"

SNSD/Girls Generation inspired lettering, lol. Have been listening to them all night tonight for some reason. I shamelessly love their songs, no matter how ridiculous the lyrics/video clips are. They appeal to my kitschy heart.
