Started some lettering on the other side... "The Wild One" 130
The wild one was not a James Dean movie, but the first real biker outlaw movie, and James was often described as The wild one.. and 130 is self explained, isn't it? :-)
In 2018, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic re-lettered K-36 2-8-2 No. 488 as locomotive No. 483, which, due to mechanical problems, hasn't run since 1977. On August 23, 2018, the "revived" No. 483 emerged from the shop in Chama, New Mexico in authentic 1960s paint and lettering. The following day, August 24, it operated as the helper engine on regular Chama-Cumbres Pass passenger train on a break-in run with locomotive No. 463. After returning light to Chama, it posed that evening for night photos with locomotive 484 at the double-spouted water tank. Following this was a two-day recreation of the last freight train(s) to operate between Antonito, Colorado, and Chama, New Mexico, in 1968, which was sponsored by TRAINS Magazine. After the charter concluded on August 26, the "483" was used one final time to pull the regular Chama-Antonito train on August 27 before it was re-lettered back as No. 488. It has been noted that the actual No. 483 was the favorite locomotive of the 10 engines that comprised Rio Grande's K-36 class, at least by the D&RGW (and later C&TS) crews that worked on her. While the original sits on display today in Chama and is well cared for, it may never run again. Seeing and photographing a recreation of 483 steaming on the three-foot narrow gauge was almost (almost!) as good as seeing the real thing.
