Went for my first flying lesson this afternoon at the Tampa North flying school in a Cessna 172SP aircraft. Since it was my first lesson, and I was nothing more than a passenger, I took my camera along. This is a shot of my neighbourhood, and the lake behind my house ( you have seen a lot of pictures of it in these pages)

Let me tell you, the 40 minute flight was a thrill beyond words. Flying commercially , and in a jet, one hardly gets to look around. Everything happens so fast, and the tiny little porthole you have to look through does not give you the perspective.

This is a whole new ballgame, and worth every bit of effort , time and money. check out:

First lesson, made these prints on card as I had it handy. They have become very textured but not unpleasant. Of course I forgot to leave any white spaces for tomorrow's lesson, ah well, if needs be, will do some on watercolour paper.

It's always frustrating to wonder how an organ sounds in churches we visit. Suddenly, someone was having a lesson!

I loathe the whole shopping experience. Long lines, annoyed consumers, and snappy clerks just aren’t for me. On the rare occasion I wander into a store, I am inundated with decisions that are always impossible to make. To simplify, one unsuspecting friend will receive a text and the decision will rest in her hands; poor girl.

Helenas little chicken, parents stopped feeding it so now she's being hand-fed

Just to the left of the frame a hillside rises up above the farmland, and I thought it would be a great place to shoot from. After hiking up the hillside I noticed a dog barking from where the houses are that you can see. I didn't pay any attention to it then because it was awefully far and there are lots dogs barking in the country. After my third shot or so I noticed her barking again and could see her running towards me just about where you can see at the end of the vineyard. A couple shots later, she'd closed the gap by half and was still on a full sprint, only now I could tell she was big and seemingly very angry.

I grabbed my camera and tripod and bolted toward the road on the right and to the safety of the car. Only because I was up on the hill I soon reached the top of a 10' retaining wall. I glanced back at the dog and it was about 30' away and closing way too fast, so I went for it. I managed to land on my feet if only for a moment and ended up sprawled on the ground. More importantly, my camera hit the dirt as well. Fortunately for both of us it was pretty soft and we both came away with only minor dings.

Also fortunately was that the jump was too high for the dog who began to circle back to how I got there. I made it to the safety of the car before she could get around to me, though closing the door with my tripod fully extended proved to be a challenge and if she wanted she could have taken my leg off. It was at that point I knew she was more interested in scaring the crap out of me than eating me for dinner.

A few minutes later the dog's owner came up the hill on horseback and gave me an earful about getting permission before getting on private property.

Lesson learned!

Note to self: When you order fish in Ecuador, odds are it will not be a filet, but rather the entire fish.

Lessons of Love

He always slept

With one eye open

Now he watches

Silently

From a distance

As those he loves

Lay him to rest

Ever the guardian

He watches wistfully

Near angels wings

As his family fulfills

His lessons of love

He remembers

Watching them grow

Learning their smarts

Hoping he had not

Raised any ‘dumb kids’

They remember

His undying love

His quiet strength

Encased inside a gentle

Proud Irish, heart

And I, I shall remember

A man of steady convictions

Coming home from work

Watching the news

Reading the paper, cocktails served

As dinner is prepared

For his family, with grace

And now he watches from above

As taps are played and eyes

Fill with tears of memories

Well learned

To a father’s love

They will no, nay, never,

Forget

Edges

I loved This lesson, I learnt just as much about process as technic. For me it was thinking about how I was going to make the edges with the tools I had then thinking about what edges I was going to make in relation to the subject matter and how was I going to remember when the paint was dry or not drying, running, people walking by and looking over my shoulder 😱 😊 I realised I wasn't doing the second two steps. I was putting edges down in the moment but not thinking about composition or subject matter. Thanks Liz and class mates I having a ball doing this course. This is a view on the way to a friends house in Mt Martha, Australia,I never get tired of it.

My bag sprung a leak. This is why you shouldn't fill the water bladder until just before the hike.
