Carol's First Tonal Painting
The first assignment Prof. David Moore gave to Carol was to copy a well-known Max Meldrum print. But the important point of this lesson was to get Carol to accurately see and understand the picture's tones. Shapes and other detail were not important and were forced into lesser focus by David hanging the reference painting upside-down. This insured the subject would not distract her eye away from the tones.
For several weeks Carol would attend the class and concentrate on painting the lights and darks accurately. When David was eventually satisfied, he took Carol's painting and turned it so it could be viewed correctly. It was quite successful! Carol had done a good job with the tones and so the overall look and feel of the painting came across satisfactorily well. This first assignment helped Carol get on the road to understanding and comprehending the importance of tonal values, and how to 'squint down' in order to see and separate them.
My painting shows the evening Carol brought her painting home and explained everything to me. I was impressed! In the many years since this event took place, I have gotten so familiar with correct tones that I was able to paint from a bad photo which didn't even have tones in it. For years I had thought the photo was useless due to bad exposure but I recently decided to force a viewable image just visible enough that I could use it as reference in creating this art piece. With a bit of Photoshop tweaking I was able to see Carol holding her painting, just the way I remembered, and the mirror next to her reflecting another perspective of it all. The picture gave me a reference and I guessed at the tones to get the painting to come-out decently.
So the reality of my piece is that it conveys a Max Meldrum, David Moore, Carol White, Philip White piece of art!

Today my dad brought Jeremy over for guitar lessons. It was the first time I'd met him. He was nice and really shy, but he let me take photos of him. I took Winnie for a short stroll around the street and spent a small fortune shopping with Lauren. It was positively unbelievable. The only reason why I spent any money though is because my parents bought me the Mark II I was saving for. So I had all this money to spare, taunting me, as usual.
This is our first lesson following Rose's 2-month winter vacation. She has been back in work for one week. She was started under saddle in May 2010, and lightly worked with through the summer/fall of 2010. Our 2011 goals include showing dressage at Training Level and to very lightly start her jumping small cross rails.
Rose (aka Geneva) is a 2007 premium Oldenburg/ISR NA mare by the Oldenburg Stallion Gatsby and a Percheron/Quarter Horse mare Piper.

Youth groups including 4-H Clubs, Boy Scouts, YWCAs and others gathered pine cones to harvest seeds for the State's first tree nursery, volunteered to help plant trees, built bridges and trails, and learned to enjoy Maryland's public forests and parks.
The Maryland Forest and Park services were founded in 1906. These photos were archived in celebration of their centennial in 2006.

Aqua and Tan duct tape and colored sharpies - it's VERY clear I need more confidence in my own hand. I've never liked my own hand writing ...hopefully (through this class) it will grow on me!
