United States Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey adeptly combines the personal and the historical in her work. Her poem “History Lessons” speaks to her upbringing in the post-segregated South.
In conjunction with Trethewey’s visit to campus and public talk on March 4, a team of students has created the History Lessons Project—a public story sharing effort made up of individuals’ personal “history lesson” statements. Those stories have been crafted into an art piece that will be installed in Oberlin’s Finney Chapel during Trethewey’s talk.
I found the "Structure of Man" blog off of I think metafilter and started taking the online drawing lessons. It is a set of videos and it's pretty easy to follow along. These are figures that I drew after getting to lesson 6. I still have alot more lessons to go but the proportions of these are getting there.
Two Dandelion School boys watch as their young volunteer teacher demonstrates the finer art of guitar playing. The Dandelion School, located in Beijing's southern suburbs, was established in 2005. The school's mission is to provide a healthy, happy, and enriching environment for some of the children of Beijing's migrant workers.
Once again I have fallen behind on my Photos so I end up doing a Sunday morning Photo dump. In my defense a lot has been going on and this is but a small Sample of the photos I have taken.
The girls have continued taking swim lessons at Swim West. Things are going well and they both have progressed to the next level. Amy and I really like the teachers there and the class size. If you are looking for a place to go for swim lessons check them out.

Had a Photoshop class with Tim Buerger the other day.
Worked on some of the photos I did in a previous strobe lesson in Minato Mirai, Yokohama. Now it feels like the lesson is complete... from the shooting to the post-production.
I was never a huge fan of flashes and non-natural light but I really like the results of this class... time to practice!

another rushed shot, i'm afraid...just my timetable (3rd draft, anyway) for the coming academic year.
I drew this completely freehand! It was difficult but didn't seem to take very long, actually less time than the other one in which I traced the bottom outline! I am glad I did this by myself.
Lesson 3 - Abstracting shapes.
Defining the objects by painting the shape around them (right of photo).

To the left of photo, the objects were drawn in watercolour pencil, then base colours were added followed by shadows.
I found this exersise a bit easier than the teapot one.
Just started shooting photos friday after work up in the foothills about an hour from sacramento. I get a call from my ex saying she ran over my 13 yr olds leg in her suv. Of course my phone is barely coming in and this is coming in with lots of static. When she was about to pull in the garage he decided to jump out thinking she had stopped ... slips gets leg run over. SO I rush to the hospital he has two broken bones or smashed as the doctor said he will be in a cast for at least 6 weeks. He was really bummed when he found out his competitive soccer team is going to Orlando next month for a big tourny. We see a specialist this week hopefully they can get him up and playing again.
Swimming lessons for the under-fives at an ungodly hour on a Saturday morning. These children do not stay still, but there is something about the identical swimming hats and armbands that makes me want to attempt the impossible and capture the scene. (Also, photographs are not allowed, so drawing is the only option).

Today was a professional development day at my school. I had the pleasure of observing and filming two model lessons that highlighted small strategy grouping. When I watch these lessons, I videotape them to use for future professional development as well as for the teachers that could not attend. I thought this would make a cool pic of the day demonstrating how I spent it!

Strange title for the photo. But I realized *after* the fact that the DOF was too narrow. When I went out later to take another photo with the lens stopped down, the mushroom had been smooshed.
My son is ready to go while my wife gives a few last instructions. I think kids love riding because ultimately they are able to control this massive animal below them. And that gives them a sense of power and control that they can't get anywhere else.
I think part of that is why horses make such good therapy animals. And they are easy to love.
