The end is nye.

This is a quiet end to my 365. The real finale is this piece, which took a week to edit.

It feels very trite to be thinking back on my year on New Years Day. Like suddenly the journey of a year is not personal but some worldwide phenomenon. My journey is my own. And, damnit? I prefer to be the special one.

I've a bad run lately on flickr, with people leaving crude, judgmental comments, assuming they know much more about me and my life than they actually do. It's motivated me to stop pouring my heart out on my photo text. So I'm going to stick to surface observations about the last year about my life.

Greatest accomplishments this year:

- I scaled a cliff-face.

- And then I did it again. Naked. In a viking helmet.

- I killed Amanda Palmer.

- I got naked in a Flaming Lips music video.

- I made some friends. No really. I made them.

- My best friend from high school got married.

- I joined a writing group.

- I learned how to hula hoop.

- I visited a country on my top five list.

- There is a girl who lives in my pocket.

Less great:

- Learned why not to have a one-night stand with a girl you met in a bar in a foreign country. (hint: surprise! her mother just died.)

- Things are just as bad as always with my mother.

- My cat is going to die soon.

- I still haven't found a way to adopt a chihuahua.

- My uncle died.

- Bygones are not always bygones.

At the beginning of the year, I was unemployed, couch surfing with friends and family, breaking the few precious things I own. Now I have a great apartment all to myself, and an incredible job at an incredible place; I intend to stay there for years. I wish I could say more about my job; it's not a corporation like everyone seems to assume from my suitliness. I'm changing the world in tiny ways every day, and I love that. I utilize my mind, and I stretch myself, and I'm respected and valued and appreciated. And I love that.

Probably related to the job thing, I've become a bit of a fashionista. That's new. But I'm loving the artistry in clothing. It's a little late in life, but I'm learning to be a girl.

I began and ended my year with Elaine. We went to a party in the same house, so there's a nice bit of symmetry. Aside from Ms. Elaine, I've seen a number of friends come and go. It's painful and confusing, but I've come out the better for it. There are people who I miss terribly, but I am healthier and happier for their absence. Some friendships burn too brightly. Sometimes the quieter friendships endure.

I've been lucky enough to meet some wonderful people through the project. In fact, most of my closest friends seem to have come through flickr. So I am grateful for that. In that way, this project will always be a part of me. It has brought people into my life, and thus it has truly, deeply changed me.

Sometimes I feel very isolated; it seems like I don't have a lot of friends at all.

I'm realizing that I am incredibly friendly and incredibly introverted.

And the more I open my eyes and ears and heart, I realize I have love all around me, a spiderweb-thin series of connections that stretch right round the world. I love my humans, and they love me. And I am so grateful to have so many incredible people in my life.

So, really. To all of you who have shared your soul with me, or even some small piece of your heart? Thank you. Really, truly, deeply, thank you. When I think of all the incredible people I get to know, my head feels weak and my heart flutters. No joke.

A few favourite photos from this year:

Now is the winter of our discontent.

Eternally.

Exposé.

You will not falter or fail.

Seize the wind.

I can set you free but I could never let you go.

Beneath the shadow of a kiss.

If you can see beauty even when it is not pretty....

The coldest story ever told.

Spellbound.

My social life.

My heart beats for you.

War paint.

After the snowfall.

So what comes next?

Hopefully you'll miss my face. Because I plan to focus on other stuff. I actually still have 10 photos from August that I never printed and texted. I think I may just edit them on computer after all and get them online. I am so far beyond them by now.

Hopefully I get caught up on my long backlog of photos.

I'd like to have one not-me shoot per week. I'd like to say that'll be a portrait of someone, but finding time, energy, and humans can occasionally prove difficult.

I've also created a flickr book club, which you should join if you like to read and you ever hurt for inspiration on your photos.

I also plan to finish editing and researching my novel, to take as many trips as I can, paint more, read more, and live more.

Neptune Suite stateroom on the ms Zaandam. John checking out the itinerary for the weeks activities. Not our usual class of room but there was a last minute deal and it included a beverage card too. Woohoo!

I don't do new year's resolutions. Never have and (probably) never will as well. To me these things are pretty pointless. Should you be deceiving yourself with meaningless promises you won't hold anyway? IF you want to do something constructive which you want for a year, do a project like a 365 as I did in 2010 (or a project 52) or make it something else entirely. But please make it something constructive and not overly vague like "losing weight". Instead say you will start train running with some schedule for the next 30 or 60 days or so. A period which actually makes it fun as time passes sooner than making plans for a whole year.

After having a lot of ideas which were too hard to execute on location (I'm in Belgium right now with travel gear), I made this resolution up of shaving more since I needed a shave anyway. The final image got together in my head after walking around the house. A lot of photoshop abuse along with five different photos went into the final photo.. Nothing which ~20 layers can't fix.

Either thats the biggest fret board or the smallest orb!!

The old lens cap trick, faffing around in the garage and drive.

One exposure converted from RAW, water mark and stuck up here.

"Easter Greetings." An Easter postcard, trimmed at the top and postmarked 1909 on the back. This postcard was published as one in a series of photography-themed Easter postcards. For other cards in the series, see Photo_History's Easter Postcards of Boy with Camera and Rabbit.

My fist attempt at the ole double exposure lens cap trick! The only problem was that I forgot to put the lens cap on and refocus between exposures! It took more than a few attempts to get this lined up properly and had to move a lot of furniture out of the way! That's day 179 done… day off for me tomorrow! Night all!

Strobist… 580exii lastolite ezybox speedlite low camera right 1/1 24mm. 580exii bare high camera left 1/8 70mm. Flash fired at beginning of exposure then spun the orb over the other side of the room!

Nick and I had a lovely (and rare) night out tonight - we went to the opening reception of an art exhibition two friends have put together, which happened to be right around the corner from one of our old favourite restaurants, overlooking the river in Barnes.

We played about with some moving light trail photos on the way home, with the wide angle lens and camera on the car dashboard. I quite like how the snoopy takes centre stage, and how the movement is intimated by all the zig-zaggy lines. It might have been an idea to clean the windscreen first, though...

Canon 400mm 2.8 IS II

Lots of options... drop in filter at the rear, dial to spin the lens along the tripod mount so you don't gave to change the camera itself, 3 stabilization modes...

With my 70-200 for scale. The button near the front is to pause AF however I wish it could be set as the shutter button so you could handhold it by the tripod extension and the front...

In its hard case with giant hood reversed and leather & fabric lenscap in place...

A present from Canon, I had a chance to play with this amazing lens a couple of weeks ago...

I absolutely hate it!!! (for making my other lenses look bad ; )

I was able to shoot some outdoor football, indoor basketball, the local skatepark at sunset, and some local wildlife. It produced some stunning shots.

For this shot I got to try out my new Nikon D70 w the 50mm 1.8 AF lens from my F4...

"La Mariée était en Blanc"

(clin d'oeil à Truffaut)

A popular view and certainly not my most enjoyable place to take a photograph. If only there weren't any other photographers in the national parks... hmmmm. The mist you can see is the smoke from the Bridalveil Falls wildfire, which is adding a ton of atmosphere. As crowded as this location may be, it is still stunningly beautiful.

Quiet now, except when I exercise the shutter speeds once a month-still the class of the class. I can't bear to part with it, and who knows: I still have plenty of frozen film begging to be used :-)

Promo shots for the new Aeropastel Camera Strap.

These two lovely ladies were looking after us on the Oman Airways flight from Salalah to Muscat. We had just arrived in Muscat, when I asked to take a shot of them ; they happily agreed. After I`d taken this image & most passengers had left the plane, I needed a few moments to find the lens cap. By then the relay bus had departed , but the ladies said it was no problem, I could travel with them .However I was not allowed to by some "jobsworth" person , nor was I allowed to walk the ca. hundred metres to the terminal . So I just had to wait for the bus to return to pick up just me !!!! When I made it into the terminal my annoyed/embarrassed wife gave me a good ticking off.

You really don't want to know how long this took to get right. (I got a sense of accomplishment out of the whole thing, but it definitely would have been easier in Photoshop.)

At f1.8, the 50mm produces a very narrow depth of field, and I really like how the lenscap stands out against the out-of-field background. But golly was it hard to get the timing right.

My teeth is ugly.

#Funleader #LensCap 18mm F8.0 #Full Frame #LMount #JustShoot #NoExcuse #F8andBeThere #Sigmafp #pocketable

The lens features 6 elements in 4 groups, multi-coated glass, a 0.8m minimum focusing distance, and 100-degree FOV. The model is constructed from brass with a chrome plating finish and it is ultra-light at 80g (2.8oz).

[Good]

- Native L mount

- Ultra wide Fixed aperture 18mm f8, No accidentally moving the focusing ring or Aperture ring

- Ultra thin lens cap compliment fp's minimalist design

- Compliment Sigma fp minimalism and making the full frame camera truly pocketable

[Bad]

• Usual vignetting + Greenish corners

• No aperture No Bokeh No Sunstars

Haha naughty boy :) Lens cap from my 50mm lens.

Whilst beach-combing yesterday, I found this large rusty spring buried in the pebbles and sand. I put the lens cap in for scale. There are a couple of pieces of coloured beach-glass in view and the rock at the left of the spring has plant impressions left by 300 million-year old Ginko-like trees. For Ilona I've left notes about a few exotic rocks that are non-native (sailing-ship ballast that was dumped in the 18th and 19th centuries)
