The Pont de Normandie is a cable-stayed road bridge that spans the river Seine linking Le Havre to Honfleur in Normandy, northern France. Its total length is 2,143.21 metres (7,032 ft) – 856 metres (2,808 ft) between the two piers. It is also the last bridge to cross the Seine before it empties into the ocean. Despite being a motorway toll bridge, there is a footpath as well as a narrow cycle lane in each direction allowing pedestrians and cyclists to cross the bridge free of charge.
The bridge was designed by Michel Virlogeux, the general studies have been led by Bernard Raspaud from Bouygues, and the works management was shared between G. Barlet and P. Jacquet. The architects were François Doyelle and Charles Lavigne.[2] Construction by Bouygues, Campenon Bernard, Dumez, Monberg & Thorsen, Quillery, Sogea and Spie Batignolles[2] began in 1988 and lasted 7 years. The bridge opened on 20 January 1995.
At that time the bridge was both the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, and had the record for the longest distance between piers for any cable-stayed bridge. It was more than 250 metres (820 ft) longer between piers than the previous record. This record was lost in 1999 to the Tatara Bridge in Japan. Its record for length for a cable-stayed bridge was lost in 2004 to the 2883 meters of the Rio-Antirrio. At the end of construction, the total cost for the bridge, all ancillary structures and finance costs was $465 million and was financed by Natixis. The bridge on its own cost €233 million (US$250 million).[3][4]
The cable-stayed design was chosen because it was both cheaper and more resistant to high winds than a suspension bridge. Shortly after opening, the longest cables exhibited excessive vibrations, so several damping systems were quickly retrofitted.
The nettle weevil generally has a short 9mm length body with metallic blue-green scales covering its shell, as the weevil grows in age these scales can fall off until it is almost completely black. As the name suggests they are most found near nettles and peak in population around April to July.
Unfortunately, this species has a negative association as a pest, they can have destructive effects on strawberries, laying larvae within the soil around strawberry plants where they feed on roots. When they emerge from the soil as adults they begin to feed on leaves & stems of the host plants meaning they can easily wipe out fields.

18 to 27 inches in length. The male has a green head, white neck ring, chestnut breast and a grayish body. Their secondary wing feathers are metallic purplish blue, bordered in front and back with white. The female is mottled brown with a white tail and purplish-blue secondary wing feathers. The bill is mttled orange and black.
They inhabit ponds, lakes and marshes. Semi-domesticated birds may be found on almost any body of water.
They range from Alaska east to Quebec and south from southern Californiain the west and Virginia in the east. They winter throughout the United States.

Inside a drawer in the garage workshop I found two lengths of 'bobble' chain used to attach the plug to the bathtub - goodness knows why I thought the pieces might be useful. Looking at their quality neither is really worth keeping - junk!
This is one of the lengths placed on a mirror surface with colour coming from my old gift bag bought in the local convenience store.
And the lens used - junk, from a builder's skip!

17 to 20 inches in length. A crested, multicolored duck. The male is patterned in iridescent greens, purples and blues with a distinctive white chin patch and face stripes with a mainly red bill and long tail. The female is grayish with a broad white eye ring.
They inhabit wooded rivers and ponds and wooded swamps. VIsits freshwater marshes in late summer and fall.
They range from British Columbia east to Nova Scotia and south to California and Montana in the west and Texas and Florida in the East. They are not in the Rocky Mountains nor the Great Plains. They winter near the Pacific Coast in the west north to Washington and in the east allong the East Coast north to New Jersey.

The whistling heron measures 53 to 64 cm in length and weighs 521 to 546 g. The southern subspecies is bigger but has a shorter bill in proportion to the body.
The overall impression of standing birds is gray, with flying birds showing conspicuous white rear parts (lower back, belly, and tail). In both subspecies, adults' upperparts except the lower back are blue-gray. The feathers of the sides of head, sides of the neck, breast, and scapular area are basically white but are stained gold to buff, perhaps by the powder down typical of herons or by secretions of the preen gland; the color varies from bird to bird. In the nominate subspecies, the crown and crest (separate plumes up to 4 cm long on the nape) are black and the upper wing coverts are cinnamon-colored; the crown and crest are slate-gray and the upper wing coverts are honey-colored (or "chamois") in fostersmithi. The bill is pink with blue to violet at the base and the distal third black, the legs are greenish and rather short, and there is a fairly big area of bare bluish skin around the eye.
Juveniles have the same overall pattern but are duller than adults, with the crown lighter, the breast light gray, and the throat and sides unstained white. Chicks are undescribed.[2]
The bird is named for its most common call, a "loud, flute-like whistled kleeer-er"[3] or "a high, reedy, complaining whistle, often doubled or uttered in a ser[ies], wueeee, wueeee,.…, easily imitated" [4] or "a distinctive, characteristic, far-carrying, melodious whistle" that "can be rendered 'kee, kee, kee.'" It may also give "a slow, drawn-out whistle" when taking off. The alarm call is a harsh quah-h-h.
Unlike other herons, in flight it has fast, duck-like wingbeats and usually does not retract its neck fully.

9 to 11 inches in length. Gray above and brick red below. In males, the head and tail is black while females are dull gray. Young birds are spotted below.
Inhabits towns, gardens, opeen woodlands and agricultural land.
They range from Alaska east across North America to Newfoundland and south to California, Texas, Arkansas and South Carolina. They winter north to British Columbis and Newfoundland.

Council-owned municipal golf course was returned to public use and rewilded to parkland. In 2025, Enfield Council approved a scheme to lease over 50% of the parkland to Tottenham Hotspur for them to develop a training facility, a decision that will see the removal of 207 trees.
Enfield Council agreed a lease of 25 years for just £2m. A stitch-up between a rotten borough and a football club owned offshore.

For this weeks Macro Monday theme-contraption. This steel fridge magnet is 2" in length, and is a note, list or card holder. This is a side view of it on it's back but when upright the sliding bearing holds paper in place! Quite useful except that I never use it! HMM!
At 132 ft in length, with a boiler 45 ft long, the Big Boys don't corner well. And that's why they're articulated. When the engine takes a curve sharp enough, the massive boiler swings outward and overhangs the rail as the leading wheels follow the radius of the track.
Here, UP 4014 demonstrates that articulating overhang as it brings the Heartland of America Tour through Tower 26 in central Houston. Upon first arriving in the Bayou City, the special headed to UP's Settegast Yard in northeast Houston for an employees-only event. The following day 4014 would head over to the Amtrak Station for Sunday's public display.

The red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a bird of prey that breeds throughout most of North America, from the interior of Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies. It is one of the most common members within the genus of Buteo in North America or worldwide.
The red-tailed hawk is one of three species colloquially known in the United States as the "chickenhawk", though it rarely preys on standard-sized chickens.
The red-tailed hawk occupies a wide range of habitats and altitudes including deserts, grasslands, coniferous and deciduous forests, agricultural fields and urban areas. It is legally protected in Canada, Mexico, and the United States by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
The 14 recognized subspecies vary in appearance and range, varying most often in color, and in the west of North America, red-tails are particularly often strongly polymorphic, with individuals ranging from almost white to nearly all black.
The red-tailed hawk is one of the largest members of the genus Buteo, typically weighing from (1.5 to 3.5 lb) and measuring (18–26 in) in length, with a wingspan from (3 ft 7 in–4 ft 8 in). This species displays sexual dimorphism in size, with females averaging about 25% heavier than males.
The diet of red-tailed hawks is highly variable and reflects their status as opportunistic generalists, but in North America, it is most often a predator of small mammals such as rodents. Prey that is terrestrial and diurnal is preferred so types such as ground squirrels are preferential where they naturally occur. Large numbers of birds and reptiles can occur in the diet in several areas and can even be the primary foods.
They hunt from a perch most often but can vary their hunting techniques where prey and habitat demand it.

The most numerous medium-sized gull in the region (length 35-38 cms) The plumage varies according to age and the time of the year, in the summer they have a brown hood, but best recognized at all times by the white leading edge to the outer wing. this one skimming the sea, in the sunshine.

In the summertime, this rare fiddler crab species grows a handsome claw three times the length of its body!

The primary purpose of the Porte de Trèves (square tower measuring around 8m in length and 17m in height) is to enable access to the city.
In the year 1332, John the Blind, count of Luxembourg and La Roche, king of Bohemia and Poland, grants the City a Charter. In exchange, the city is obliged to ensure the upkeep of the city walls, which the citizens must keep guarded. In 1688, the city walls are demolished by order of the king Louis XIV, and the Porte de Trèves is converted into a prison and halfway house until the First World War.
Restoration work was carried out during the 19th century. The damage caused by the Von Rundstedt Offensive in 1944-1945 also almost destroyed the building.
To this day, the Porte de Trèves is the last remaining vestige of the fortifications that surrounded the city in the middle ages.

The American white pelican rivals the trumpeter swan, with a similar overall length, as the longest bird native to North America. Both very large and plump, it has an overall length of about 50–70 in (130–180 cm), courtesy of the huge beak which measures 11.3–15.2 in (290–390 mm) in males and 10.3–14.2 in (260–360 mm) in females. It has a wingspan of about 95–120 in (240–300 cm). The species also has the second largest average wingspan of any North American bird, after the California condor. This large wingspan allows the bird to easily use soaring flight for migration. Body weight can range between 7.7 and 30 lb (3.5 and 13.6 kg), although typically these birds average between 11 and 20 lb (5.0 and 9.1 kg). One mean body mass of 15.4 lb (7.0 kg) was reported. Another study found mean weights to be somewhat lower than expected, with eleven males averaging 13.97 lb (6.34 kg) and six females averaging 10.95 lb (4.97 kg). Among standard measurements, the wing chord measures 20–26.7 in (51–68 cm) and the tarsus measures 3.9–5.4 in (9.9–13.7 cm) long. The plumage is almost entirely bright white, except the black primary and secondary remiges, which are hardly visible except in flight. From early spring until after breeding has finished in mid-late summer, the breast feathers have a yellowish hue. After moulting into the eclipse plumage, the upper head often has a grey hue, as blackish feathers grow between the small wispy white crest.
The bill is huge and flat on the top, with a large throat sac below, and, in the breeding season, is vivid orange in color as is the iris, the bare skin around the eye, and the feet. In the breeding season, there is a laterally flattened "horn" on the upper bill, located about one-third the bill's length behind the tip. This is the only one of the eight species of pelican to have a bill "horn". The horn is shed after the birds have mated and laid their eggs. Outside the breeding season the bare parts become duller in color, with the naked facial skin yellow and the bill, pouch, and feet an orangy-flesh color.
Apart from the difference in size, males and females look exactly alike. Immature birds have light grey plumage with darker brownish nape and remiges. Their bare parts are dull grey. Chicks are naked at first, then grow white down feathers all over, before moulting to the immature plumage.

Piercing calls and distinctive wing markings make the otherwise subdued Willet one of our most conspicuous large shorebirds. Whether in mottled brown breeding plumage or gray winter colors, Willets in flight reveal a bold white and black stripe running the length of each wing. These long-legged, straight-billed shorebirds feed along beaches, mudflats, and rocky shores. Willets are common on most of our coastline—learn to recognize them and they’ll make a useful stepping-stone to identifying other shorebirds.

Enfield Council agreed a lease of 25 years for just £2m. A stitch-up between a rotten borough and an offshore-owned football club.
