A late running Aurizon 6MX1 led by RailFirst lease unit GL102 with former VR G535 rolls downgrade at Clapham with a good length train on March 22, 2025.

 

GL102 is one of 12 locomotives rebuilt by Goninan from ex-NSWGR 442 class ALCos with GE 7FDL-12 power plants and classified as a C30-MMi.

Common Hawker (male), Aeshna juncea.

Though mostly absent from Southern and Eastern England, the Common Hawker is common in Western England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland in moorland habitats with acidic pools.

 

Similar in appearance to other blue-spotted hawker species, (Southern, Migrant, Azure Hawkers and the Hairy Dragonfly), but only shares its moorland habitat with the Azure Hawker and in all of these other species the leading wing vein (costa) is brown and not yellow as in the Common Hawker.

 

Solitary Common Hawkers are often seen feeding in woodland rides and other sheltered sites at a considerable distance from breeding sites. Males spend long periods in flight and rarely perch but when they do settle they use tree branches and trunks, (as in this photograph), rather than boulders and paths that the Azure Hawker prefers and are usually alert and difficult to approach.

 

Identification: Paired spots on each abdominal segment. Yellow costa (leading wing vein). Broad stripes on side of the thorax.

Male: Blue eyes. Black with blue spots on the abdomen and thin yellow stripes along the dorsal surface of the thorax.

Female: Brown-green eyes. Brown with yellow, blue or green spots on the abdomen and very small/absent stripes along the dorsal surface of the thorax.

 

Hawkers are the largest and fastest flying dragonflies, catching their insect-prey mid-air and can hover or fly backwards.

Council-owned municipal golf course was returned to public use and rewilded to parkland. In 2025, Enfield Council approved a scheme to lease over 50% of the parkland to Tottenham Hotspur for them to develop a training facility, a decision that will see the removal of 207 trees.

 

Enfield Council agreed a lease of 25 years for just £2m. A stitch-up between a rotten borough and an offshore-owned football club.

The 25 de Abril Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tagus river. It has a total length of 2,277 metres, making it the 46th longest suspension bridge in the world.

From its inauguration in 6 August 1966 up to 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazar), after Portuguese Prime Minister António de Oliveira Salazar, who ordered its construction. After the Carnation Revolution, which overthrew the remnants of Salazar's regime, the bridge was renamed for April 25, the date of the revolution. It is also commonly called the Tagus River Bridge.

Later changes had to be made due to the rapid increase in population. In the 1990s, a fifth car lane was added, and in 1999, a lower deck, used as a railway track, which was planned since the beginning, was finally built. Today, the upper deck carries six car lanes while the lower deck carries a double track railway, electrified at 25 kV AC.

From the late 19th century, there had been proposals to build a bridge across the Tagus. In 1929, the idea advanced when the Portuguese engineer and entrepreneur, António Bello, requested a government concession for a railway crossing between Lisbon and Montijo (where the Vasco da Gama Bridge, the second bridge serving Lisbon, was later built in 1998). As a result, the Minister of Public Works, Duarte Pacheco, created a commission in 1933 to analyse the request. The commission reported in 1934, and proposed building a road and rail bridge. Bids were obtained, but the proposal was subsequently put aside in favor of a bridge crossing the river at Vila Franca de Xira, 35 kilometres north of Lisbon.

In 1953, a new government commission started work and, in 1958, recommended building the bridge, choosing the southern anchor point adjacent to the recently built monument to Christ the King (Cristo-Rei). In 1959, the international invitation to tender for the project received four bids. In 1960, the winner was announced as a consortium headed by the United States Steel Export Company, which had also submitted a bid in 1935. The American School of Lisbon was founded largely to educate the children of the American engineers brought to Portugal to work on the construction of the bridge.

Construction began on 5 November 1962. Forty-five months later, six months ahead of schedule, the bridge was inaugurated on 6 August 1966. Presiding at the ceremony was the President of Portugal, Admiral Américo Thomaz. Also present were the Prime-Minister, António de Oliveira Salazar, and the Patriarch of Lisbon, Cardinal Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira. The bridge was named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazar), after Prime Minister Salazar.

United States Steel International Inc., based in New York, was prime contractor for the bridge. Morrison-Knudsen of Portugal Ltd., an American firm based in Boise, Idaho, was U.S. Steel's principal associate. Morrison-Knudsen had previously worked on the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The bridge was designed by Steinman, Boynton, Gronquist and London of New York, and Tudor Engineering Company of San Francisco. The steel was imported from the US. Four workers lost their lives, out of a total of 3,000 who worked on the site. Construction took a total of 2,185,000 man-hours of work. The total cost of the bridge came to 2.2 billion Portuguese escudos, or US$32 million (US$225 million in 2011 adjusted for inflation).

Soon after the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the bridge was renamed the 25 de Abril Bridge, the day the revolution had occurred. A symbol of those times was captured on film, with citizens removing the large brass letters spelling "Salazar" from one of the main pillars of the bridge and painting a provisional "25 de Abril" in its place.

The upper platform, running 70 m above water, had four car lanes, two in each direction, with a dividing guardrail. On 23 July 1990, the guardrail was removed and a fifth, reversible lane was created. On 6 November 1998, the side walls were extended and reinforced to make space for the present six lanes. Cars crossing the bridge make a peculiar hum because the two inner lanes are made of metallic grating rather than asphalt to minimize aerodynamic forces by means of pressure equalization.

Since 30 June 1999, the lower platform has carried a double track railway. To accommodate that, the bridge underwent extensive structural reinforcements, including a second set of main cables, placed above the original set, and the main towers were increased in height. The railway had been part of the initial design, but was eliminated for economy, so the initial structure was lightened. The original builder American Bridge Company was called again for the job, performing the first aerial spinning of additional main cables on a loaded, fully operational suspension bridge.

Traffic soon increased well beyond predictions, and has remained at maximum capacity despite the enlargement from four to six lanes, the addition of the railway, and the building of a second bridge serving Lisbon, the Vasco da Gama Bridge. A third bridge has been on and off government plans for some time, but the idea has been dropped presently, due to Portugal's budget constraints.

The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) is a species of oceanic turtle distributed throughout the world. It is a marine reptile, belonging to the family Cheloniidae. The average loggerhead measures around 90 cm (35 in) in carapace length when fully grown. The adult loggerhead sea turtle weighs approximately 135 kg (298 lb), with the largest specimens weighing in at more than 450 kg (1,000 lb). The skin ranges from yellow to brown in color, and the shell is typically reddish brown. No external differences in sex are seen until the turtle becomes an adult, the most obvious difference being the adult males have thicker tails and shorter plastrons (lower shells) than the females.

 

The loggerhead sea turtle is found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea. It spends most of its life in saltwater and estuarine habitats, with females briefly coming ashore to lay eggs. The loggerhead sea turtle has a low reproductive rate; females lay an average of four egg clutches and then become quiescent, producing no eggs for two to three years. The loggerhead reaches sexual maturity within 17–33 years and has a lifespan of 47–67 years.

 

The loggerhead sea turtle is omnivorous, feeding mainly on bottom-dwelling invertebrates. Its large and powerful jaws serve as an effective tool for dismantling its prey. Young loggerheads are exploited by numerous predators; the eggs are especially vulnerable to terrestrial organisms. Once the turtles reach adulthood, their formidable size limits predation to large marine animals, such as large sharks.

 

The loggerhead sea turtle has a cosmopolitan distribution, nesting over the broadest geographical range of any sea turtle. It inhabits the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea.

 

In the Atlantic Ocean, the greatest concentration of loggerheads is along the southeastern coast of North America and in the Gulf of Mexico. Very few loggerheads are found along the European and African coastlines. Florida is the most popular nesting site, with more than 67,000 nests built per year. Nesting extends as far north as Virginia, as far south as Brazil, and as far east as the Cape Verde Islands. The Cape Verde Islands are the only significant nesting site on the eastern side of the Atlantic. Loggerheads found in the Atlantic Ocean feed from Canada to Brazil.

 

In the Indian Ocean, loggerheads feed along the coastlines of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and in the Arabian Sea. Along the African coastline, loggerheads nest from Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago to South Africa's St Lucia estuary. The largest Indian Ocean nesting site is Oman, on the Arabian Peninsula, which hosts around 15,000 nests, giving it the second largest nesting population of loggerheads in the world. Western Australia is another notable nesting area, with 1,000–2,000 nests per year.

 

Pacific loggerheads live in temperate to tropical regions. They forage in the East China Sea, the southwestern Pacific, and along the Baja California Peninsula. Eastern Australia and Japan are the major nesting areas, with the Great Barrier Reef deemed an important nesting area. Pacific loggerheads occasionally nest in Vanuatu and Tokelau. Yakushima Island is the most important site, with three nesting grounds visited by 40% of all nearby loggerheads. After nesting, females often find homes in the East China Sea, while the Kuroshio Current Extension's Bifurcation region provides important juvenile foraging areas. Eastern Pacific populations are concentrated off the coast of Baja California, where upwelling provides rich feeding grounds for juvenile turtles and subadults. Nesting sites along the eastern Pacific Basin are rare. mtDNA sequence polymorphism analysis and tracking studies suggest 95% of the population along the coast of the Americas hatch on the Japanese Islands in the western Pacific. The turtles are transported by the prevailing currents across the full length of the northern Pacific, one of the longest migration routes of any marine animal. The return journey to the natal beaches in Japan has been long suspected, although the trip would cross unproductive clear water with few feeding opportunities. Evidence of a return journey came from an adult female loggerhead named Adelita, which in 1996, equipped with a satellite tracking device, made the 14,500 km (9,000 mi) trip from Mexico across the Pacific. Adelita was the first animal of any kind ever tracked across an ocean basin.

 

The Mediterranean Sea is a nursery for juveniles, as well as a common place for adults in the spring and summer months. Almost 45% of the Mediterranean juvenile population has migrated from the Atlantic. Loggerheads feed in the Alboran Sea and the Adriatic Sea, with tens of thousands of specimens (mainly sub-adult) seasonally present in the North-Eastern portion of the latter, above all in the area of the Po Delta. Greece is the most popular nesting site along the Mediterranean, with more than 3,000 nests per year. Zakynthos hosts the largest Mediterranean nesting with the second one being in Kyparissia Bay. Because of this, Greek authorities do not allow planes to take off or land at night in Zakynthos due to the nesting turtles. In addition to the Greek coast, the coastlines of Cyprus and Turkey are also common nesting sites.

I have worn it before and i think i have posted the photos a little while back. this was taken the other night when i was recovering from a hectic weekend.

 

This look really came together well just because i had worn a hat all day and it kind of squished my hair into this style lol.

Many wildlife photographers tend to shy away from vultures, but yet they will go to great lengths to photograph the bald eagle. We picture our national bird as this powerful raptor that attacks and kills its prey by diving from great heights, etc. Well here's a little truth to, perhaps, rain on that parade a little bit. While an eagle can dive and kill its prey, the truth is they are very much opportunistic feeders, if not a bit lazy. They will feed, therefore, on dead and rotten meat, and I do mean rotten, very rotten! They actually compete with and will chase away their raptor cousins, the vultures. So with that image in mind, perhaps the vultures do deserve a little photographic coverage, since they feed from the same trough as the eagle ;-> These two images are of the black vulture and the turkey vulture. The latter is easily distinguished by the red on its head. The turkey vulture has the largest olfactory lobe in the bird kingdom. They are often called the bloodhounds of the skies, as they can detect the slightest aroma of 'dead meat'. If you look closely at the turkey vulture's head, you can see it highly developed sinus passages. You can see daylight though the opening, as it is open laterally to allow more air in for sampling. The black vulture is totally lacking in this specialized sinus 'array' and their olfactory lobe in their brain is much, much smaller. So what happens in nature is that the black vulture hangs out near the turkey vulture. When the latter finds a meal, the former swoops in for a free meal. And of course the bald eagle is just as likely to join in on the feast as well, running off the buzzards while it gets it fill.

Taken with a Nikkor ED 500mm f/4 P manual focus lens plus Nikon TC301 2x matched teleconverter giving effective 1000mm focal length. Cable release and mirror-up mode used to minimise motion-blur and of course tripod mounted. As seen over East Yorkshire. Cropped in by about 10% to omit some colour noise artefacts around edge of frame. I have rotated the frame through 90 degrees for a 'landscape' presentation.

At nearly a mile in length, Big River Crossing (originally known as the Harahan Bridge) is the longest public pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi and is also the country’s longest active rail/bicycle/pedestrian bridge. It serves as the connection point of Main Street to Main Street, a 10-mile, multi-modal corridor that also features the Big River Trail System, creating ties to attractions throughout the Memphis, TN, West Memphis, AR, and Mississippi River delta region.

 

This bridge is a nationally significant historic bridge all on its own. What makes this setting even more unique is that this bridge sits right next to an even more significant historic bridge, the Frisco Bridge. To top this all off, the highway bridge that is also next to these two railroad bridges is also historic, and is the Memphis and Arkansas Bridge. Three historic cantilever truss bridges over the Mississippi River side by side, two of those bridges being nationally significant: there is no other historic bridge trio like this in North America.

 

The Harahan Bridge (completed in 1916) was designed to carry railroad traffic in between truss lines, and highway traffic on cantilevered decks outside of the truss lines. The construction of the Memphis and Arkansas Bridge ended the use of the Harahan Bridge for vehicular traffic. In 2016 however, a unique project converted the north vehicular deck into a pedestrian walkway named the Big River Crossing. This new walkway is unique because of its size, and also because it is rare for a railroad company to allow a public walkway to exist on one of their bridges. As might be expected, substantial fencing separates pedestrians from the railroad tracks. However, the truss is so large that despite the fencing, the walkway still offers excellent up-close views of the impressive details of the truss. Another important aspect of the walkway is that despite addition of modern railing on the outside, the original riveted lattice railings for the vehicular deck were not removed. This helps convey the former vehicular usage of the deck, and also maintains the original appearance of the bridge.

 

While the Frisco Bridge (placed on the Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks list in 1987) was designed by one of the greatest bridge engineers of the 19th Century, the Harahan Bridge was similarly designed by one of the 20th Century's greatest bridge engineers, Ralph Modjeski. As such, works by two of the greatest engineers of their respective centuries can be seen side-by-side. This affords a unique comparison between both engineering thinking, and also changing needs of two different periods in railroad history.

Photographing goldfish in a small aquarium with a modest macro/micro lens can be a frustrating task but sometimes curiosity (or determination) wins the day. Fish move constantly, quickly and collegially. Depth of field is shallow but has to be to blur miscellanea. Focal length is short to press the camera against the glass and keep the focus in the tank. Light is either weak or coloured in some weird way. And finally, fish don't do much beyond moving out of field or focus or both. All I can show is this bold and delicate moment.

This Bald Eagle photograph is straight off the camera. It was perched on a lamp-post in Port Hardy and I had a fixed focal length lens. Because of the local geography I could not move any further away so I could not fit in the whole bird. I had to settle for a beak and claws shot, and this is it.

Alligator photographed in a national preserve 45 minutes from my home. I have no idea of its length. The many reflections and color in the water were created by plants growing by the water. It appears I have a visiting dragonfly on its back.

 

The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), sometimes referred to colloquially as a gator or common alligator, is a large crocodilian reptile endemic to the Southeastern United States. It is one of two living species in the genus Alligator within the family Alligatoridae.

 

Adult male American alligators measure 11.2 to 15.1 ft in length, and can weigh up to (999 lb). Females are smaller, measuring (8.5 to 9.8 ft) in length.

 

The American alligator inhabits freshwater wetlands, such as marshes and cypress swamps from Texas to southeastern and coastal North Carolina.

 

American alligators are apex predators and consume fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Hatchlings feed mostly on invertebrates.

 

They play an important role as ecosystem engineers in wetland ecosystems through the creation of alligator holes, which provide both wet and dry habitats for other organisms.

 

Throughout the year, in particular during the breeding season, American alligators bellow to declare territory and locate suitable mates. Male American alligators use infrasound to attract females.

 

The conservation status of the American alligator is listed as least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

 

Historically, hunting had decimated their population, and the American alligator was listed as an endangered species by the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

 

Subsequent conservation efforts have allowed their numbers to increase and the species was removed from endangered status in 1987. The species is the official state reptile of three states: Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

May 6, 2010. Day 101. I kept watching this giant weed grow in my garden, but I was always too lazy to pull it out. It was covered in tiny spikes, so I couldn't just yank it out with my bare hands, and I never felt like going into the garage to grab my gardening gloves. Instead, it became this fun thing to watch as I read in the yard. It just kept growing, as tall as me. I was impressed by its stature. Then one morning I realized that my weed was no weed at all, but a sunflower that had apparently planted itself. Such a nice surprise.

Southern Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus),

As the name is defined, the range of the Southern Caracara is restricted to central and southern South America.

Individuals from the colder southern part of its range are the largest type of caracara.

It has a total length of 50–65 cm (20–26 in) and a wingspan of 120–132 cm (47–52 in). Weight is 0.9-1.6 kg (2-3.5 lbs)

Cerastes are small snakes, averaging less than 50 cm in length, but are relatively stout in appearance. The head is broad, flat and distinct from the neck. The head is covered with tubercularly keeled scales, which usually number 15 or more across, and a supraorbital horn may be present over each eye in some species. The snout is short and wide and the eyes, which are set well forward, are small to moderate in size. The body is short, stout and cylindrically depressed. The tail is short and tapers abruptly behind the vent.

The first thing to notice is the length of the new Volvo B8L / Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 XLB, and when you climb the stairs it does seem a long way to the back!

 

With 100 seats those sitting right at the back here may have to start thinking of heading for the exit door a little earlier than before!

 

Nice to have plenty more light from the windows in the ceiling, improved air quality with built in air conditioning and windows that open. And those seats....they passed Mr Monty's test!

Being one of the most mass-produced heavy cruisers at the beginning of the Insectoid War, this vessel by its design presented the concept of the large battles of those times: a moderate number of plasma guns and turbolasers, located so that it is most effective to fire sideways. The classic linearcruiser, which at that time was considered obsolete, but the war showed its usefulness. Thanks to its design, it was convenient for conducting bombardments from orbit, which was facilitated by the presence of twelve ballistic missiles on board. And its speed and range made it possible to conduct raids deep into the territory of the enemy.

Joshua swam in his first summer swim meet recently. He finally feels confident enough in his breaststroke to swim the IM. This shot shows him in the starting leg, swimming butterfly. There was not much competition in this meet. He easily won all his races, often by more than a pool's length. Helps when he's swimming in the 13-14 year old division. The summer of Joshua.

About the photographs.

 

This is Marie posing in a size 22, medium length brown faux fur coat, with hood from M&Co. She is also posing in her own black latex corset, and black hold-ups stockings. One photo shows her with the hood up, and the other with the hood down.

 

I booked Marie for a two hours photo-shoot at my home.

 

The first hour was done in my back garden, for a fashion style photo-shoot and also for my graphic design project. You can see those photos in one of my Albums titled LadyArtist (Marie).

 

After this, the second hour was for moderate level kind of photography, including this outfit and poses. Those were test shots I took in the top floor hallway.

 

Despite my being deaf with communications difficulties, Marie did remark that she found working with me to be going so well, and left positive reviews on my profile.

 

Marie was a model (either professional or amateur, I forgotten which one), and registered under the username of LadyArtist on PurplePort, a website for models to advert their services.

Short Bio: The Dapper Cyclura was commissioned as an intrasystem cargo ship.

Built between September 1st and September 31st, I had a lot of fun just letting this ship grow on its frame. The system I most wanted to integrate, which I succeeded at, was using Power Function motors to allow both the radar dishes and bottom-hull turbines to rotate at different speeds. My solution worked, however the mechanism I used ended up very loud, so it isn't reasonable to active at a convention. I'll post a video later in the month.

SS Kronprinzessin Cecilie was an ocean liner built in Stettin, Germany in 1906 for Hapag-Lloyd that had the largest steam reciprocating machinery ever fitted in a ship at the time of construction.[2][4] The last of four ships of the Kaiser class, she was also the last German ship to have been built with four funnels. She was engaged in transatlantic service between her home port of Bremen and New York until the outbreak of World War I.

 

On 4 August 1914, at sea after leaving New York, she turned around and put into Bar Harbor, Maine, where she later was interned by the neutral United States. After that country entered the war in April 1917, the ship was seized and turned over to the United States Navy, and renamed USS Mount Vernon (ID-4508). While serving as a troop transport, Mount Vernon was torpedoed in September 1918. Though damaged, she was able to make port for repairs and returned to service. In October 1919 Mount Vernon was turned over for operation by the Army Transport Service in its Pacific fleet based at Fort Mason in San Francisco. USAT Mount Vernon was sent to Vladivostok, Russia to transport elements of the Czechoslovak Legion to Trieste, Italy and German prisoners of war to Hamburg, Germany. On return from that voyage, lasting from March through July 1920, the ship was transferred to the United States Shipping Board and laid up at Solomons Island, Maryland until September 1940 when she was scrapped at Boston, Massachusetts.

History

Concept

 

Kronprinzessin Cecilie, built at Stettin, Germany, in 1906 by AG Vulcan Stettin, was the last of a set of four liners built for North German Lloyd, and the last German liner to carry four smokestacks. She was the product of ensuing competition between Germany and the United Kingdom for supremacy in the North Atlantic. Her older sister, Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse had been introduced in 1897 and was a great success.[5] Her popularity prompted North German Lloyd to build three more superliners, namely Kronprinz Wilhelm (1901), Kaiser Wilhelm II (1903) and, finally, Kronprinzessin Cecilie.[5]

 

As designed the ship had 287 first-class, 109 second-class cabins and 7 compartments for steerage passengers.[3] Passenger capacity was 775 first-class, 343 second-class and 770 steerage passengers for a total of 1,888 supported by a crew of 679 that included 229 stewards and stewardesses and 42 cooks, pantrymen, barbers, hairdressers and other passenger service people.[3][note 1] Two "Imperial suites" had a parlor, private dining room, bedroom and bath room with toilet while eight other suites had all but the dining room.[3] Twelve deluxe rooms had a large bedroom with bathroom and toilet.[3]

 

The liner was 19,400 GRT and was 215.29 metres (706 ft 4 in) length overall,[2][3] 208.89 metres (685 ft 4 in) length between perpendiculars, by 22.00 metres (72 ft 2 in) abeam. She had four reciprocating, quadruple-expansion steam engines, two per shaft. There were two screw propellers. Kronprinzessin Cecilie sailed at a comfortable 23 knots (43 km/h; 26 mph).

In 1907 Wiegard trusted Eduard Scotland and Alfred Runge with the interior design of the ship. They designed luxury cabins where the beds would convert to sofas and the washstands would convert into tables. All of the metalwork was gilded; the surfaces were generally white while the wooden surfaces of violet amaranth were inlaid with agate, ivory and citron wood.[6]

 

First-Class passengers had access to a smoking room, music room, reading, library and writing room, bookshop, and two "Vienna Cafés" decorated in the Louis XVI style. One café was for smokers and the other ladies-only.[7] The smokers' café had an open-air section which could be enclosed in bad weather by bronze and glass doors. The ladies' café was modeled after the boudoir of Marie Antoinette at the Palace of Fontainebleau. The First-class smoking room was decorated in the "modern Roman style", according to The Marine Review, with painted scenes of Mecklenburg, the home of the ships' namesake Crown Princess Cecilie, decorating the walls. The dining saloon was illuminated from a skylight four decks above and its walls were upholstered in blue silk tapestry. The saloon's seating was innovative in that it dispensed with the long tables typical of other liners, instead featuring 76 round tables seating two, five or seven people. There was also a separate children's dining room aboard.[7]

German career

 

Named after Crown Princess Cecilie of Prussia, she was launched by her father in law Wilhelm II, German Emperor. In July 1907, the new Kronprinzessin Cecilie was planned to leave Bremerhaven on her maiden voyage. However, before the voyage could take place, the ship sank in Bremerhaven harbour. It was not until the next month on 6 August, had the ship been pumped out and repaired, before finally setting out.[5]

In comparison with a $2,500 first-class-suite ticket, the immigrant could sail on Kronprinzessin Cecilie for a mere $25—one hundred times cheaper.[5]

 

The interiors of the "four flyers",[5] as they were called, were special. The entire ship was fitted with the best of craftsmanship Germany could offer; the salons were full of ornamented wood and gilded mirrors. While her sister, Kaiser Wilhelm II was thought by some to be too extravagant, Kronprinzessin Cecilie was a popular ship.[5] Some of her first-class suites were fitted with dining rooms so the passengers who booked the suite could dine in private if they did not wish to take their meals in the main restaurant. Also, a fish tank was placed in the kitchen, providing first-class passengers with the freshest of fish.[5] In what was a novelty at the time, first-class passengers in the dining saloon could choose à la carte dishes for no extra charge instead of being limited to a fixed menu.[7]

 

The liner operated on North German Lloyd's transatlantic route travelling from Bremen, with occasional calls at other ports, including Boston and New Orleans. The ship was steaming toward Germany from America with Captain Charles Polack,[8] who had succeeded Dietrich Hogemann in 1913,[9] when she received word of the outbreak of war. In addition to 1,216 passengers, including some British reservist, she was carrying US$10,679,000 in gold and US$3 million in silver.[10] The ship, bound for Bremen, was nearing Liverpool when directed to head back to the closest port in the neutral United States to avoid capture by the British Navy and French cruisers.[10][11] Captain Polack had her normally all-buff funnels painted with black tops so as to resemble the liner Olympic or another ship of the British White Star Line as a form of disguise.[4][12]

 

Due to the liner's dwindling fuel, Bar Harbor, Maine, though not a large port, was selected with the ship being brought on 4 August 1914 piloted by a local banker and yachtsman as none of the ship's officers were familiar with the port.[10] North German Lloyd representatives met in Washington with officials of the departments of State, Treasury, Commerce and the United States Revenue Cutter Service (USRCS) with the result USRC Androscoggin was ordered to Bar Harbor to prevent unauthorized departure of foreign vessels but primarily to protect the transfer of gold and silver, as well as all mail and passengers, from Kronprinzessin Cecilie to shore to be transported by train to New York.[10] Androscoggin, joined by the destroyer USS Warrington, arrived at Bar Harbor on 6 August with wild speculation in the press.[10] On 7 November the ship moved to Boston where she was to remain while civil suits against the ship were resolved in federal court.[13]

American career: Mount Vernon

Navy

 

Kronprinzessin Cecilie was commandeered by the United States on 3 February 1917 and transferred from the United States Shipping Board (USSB) to the U.S. Navy when America entered the war that April. She was commissioned 28 July 1917 and renamed USS Mount Vernon after George Washington's Virginia home. She was fitted out at Boston to carry troops and materiel to Europe.[2]

 

Mount Vernon left New York for Brest on 31 October 1917 for her first U.S. Navy crossing, and during the war made nine successful voyages carrying American troops to fight in Europe. However, early on the morning of 5 September 1918, as the transport steamed homeward in convoy some 200 nautical miles (370 km) from the French coast, her No. 1 gun crew spotted a periscope some 500 yards (460 m) off her starboard bow. Mount Vernon immediately fired one round at German U-boat U-82. The U‑boat simultaneously submerged, but managed to launch a torpedo at the transport. Mount Vernon's officer of the deck promptly ordered right full rudder, but the ship could not turn in time to avoid the missile, which struck her amidships, knocking out half of her boilers, flooding the midsection, and killing 36 sailors and injuring 13. Mount Vernon's guns kept firing ahead of the U‑boat's wake and her crew launched a pattern of depth charges. Damage-control teams worked to save the ship, and their efforts paid off when the transport was able to return to Brest under her own power. Repaired temporarily at Brest, she proceeded to Boston for complete repairs.[2]

 

Mount Vernon rejoined the Cruiser and Transport Service in February 1919 and sailed on Washington's Birthday for France to begin returning veterans to the United States. Mount Vernon pulled out of port on 3 March 1919 at 11 PM to return to the United States. Some of her notable passengers during her naval service were: Admiral William S. Benson, Chief of Naval Operations; General Tasker H. Bliss, Chief of Staff of the United States Army; Col. Edward M. House, Special Adviser to President Wilson; and Newton D. Baker, Secretary of War.[2]

Army

 

On 17 October 1919 Mount Vernon was transferred to the War Department for operation by the Army Transport Service where the ship was assigned to the Army's Pacific fleet based at Fort Mason in San Francisco.[14] USAT Mount Vernon made one trip between March and July 1920 to Vladivostok, Russia embarking elements of the Czechoslovak Legion to be disembarked at Trieste, Italy and 300 German prisoners of war for Hamburg, Germany.[14] On return the ship was turned over to the United States Shipping Board and laid up at Solomons Island, Maryland.[14]

Scrapping

 

At the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the Americans offered the former Kronprinzessin Cecilie to the British as a troop transport, who declined as they considered her too old.[5] The ship was scrapped in Boston, Massachusetts, the demolition began on 13 September 1940.[2][14]

Not bad for coming straight out of camera. Pre-rotated shot and trimmed for a 16:9 and still 6400px wide. Effective focal length of 640mm on crop sensor. Spectator vantage point 8'-10' away from the fence I had to shoot through. Glad it was overcast :P

 

I generally do not put full size images up here but figured 'why not' for anyone that wanted to see what the camera can do.

 

Admittedly, there was an issue with focusing that was not really revealed (that I could not fix) until after this event so I had a helluva time with this camera. I have since (I think) rectified the matter but have not had a chance to really test it. Was not really a fan of the 400 f2.8 mkIII and how it focused. Much prefer the way the mkII focuses but could have also been user-error. Ok, likely was user error. Note to self: Don't show up to a major event with brand new kit that you've never tested. Still got hundreds of keepers though.

 

I also learned that I cannot underexpose by 2/3 to 1 stop as I would like to with this sensor because it's too dark. Dynamic range is definitely better than the 7DmkII but the dark areas are a little to dark. My concern with that is I will have to compromise on the highlights a little bit because the darks are so dark and not so sure I want to do that. Nevertheless, I figured I'd put-up what I got straight off the camera because for the price of this camera (and quality glass), it's pretty darn good.

 

There is no editing done to this other than the crop and converting the RAW to RGB. Settings like contrast, sharpness were set in-camera so what I shot is what I got.

 

Definitely a little crunchier for my tastes with the noise than what I'm used to getting from my 5D mkIV but overall, decent. Jury is still out though on whether the 90D is viable for me to use. Not a fan of crop sensors and how they cut-into/trim the perspective-feel/look compared to a full frame. Time will tell after some more testing and using the 300mm f2.8 and what I can get.
