The Pinwheel (Messier 101) is a large spiral galaxy that appears in the constellation Ursa Major (a.k.a. "The Big Dipper"). Physically, it is significantly larger than our own Milky Way galaxy while its apparent visual diameter is about the same size as the full moon. This wide-field image covers nearly two and one-half degrees on the diagonal and includes many smaller background galaxies (most notably NGC 5474 on the lower right and the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5422 on the upper left).
Image capture was done over three evenings in January 2015 using an unmodified Sony NEX-5R digital camera (ISO 800, 99 seconds x 329, producing a total exposure integration time of just over 9 hours). The imaging telescope was a 5” refractor working at an effective focal length of 528mm at f/4.2. The setup also included the use of a light-pollution filter that causes about a two-thirds f-stop loss in broadband light transmission (a necessary "evil" given my significantly light-polluted, red-zone skies).
Image processing was done with PixInsight v1.8, Photoshop and Lightroom CC2014.

The Pont de Normandie is a cable-stayed road bridge that spans the river Seine linking Le Havre to Honfleur in Normandy, northern France. Its total length is 2,143.21 metres (7,032 ft) – 856 metres (2,808 ft) between the two piers. It is also the last bridge to cross the Seine before it empties into the ocean. Despite being a motorway toll bridge, there is a footpath as well as a narrow cycle lane in each direction allowing pedestrians and cyclists to cross the bridge free of charge.
The bridge was designed by Michel Virlogeux, the general studies have been led by Bernard Raspaud from Bouygues, and the works management was shared between G. Barlet and P. Jacquet. The architects were François Doyelle and Charles Lavigne.[2] Construction by Bouygues, Campenon Bernard, Dumez, Monberg & Thorsen, Quillery, Sogea and Spie Batignolles[2] began in 1988 and lasted 7 years. The bridge opened on 20 January 1995.
At that time the bridge was both the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, and had the record for the longest distance between piers for any cable-stayed bridge. It was more than 250 metres (820 ft) longer between piers than the previous record. This record was lost in 1999 to the Tatara Bridge in Japan. Its record for length for a cable-stayed bridge was lost in 2004 to the 2883 meters of the Rio-Antirrio. At the end of construction, the total cost for the bridge, all ancillary structures and finance costs was $465 million and was financed by Natixis. The bridge on its own cost €233 million (US$250 million).[3][4]
The cable-stayed design was chosen because it was both cheaper and more resistant to high winds than a suspension bridge. Shortly after opening, the longest cables exhibited excessive vibrations, so several damping systems were quickly retrofitted.

The nettle weevil generally has a short 9mm length body with metallic blue-green scales covering its shell, as the weevil grows in age these scales can fall off until it is almost completely black. As the name suggests they are most found near nettles and peak in population around April to July.
Unfortunately, this species has a negative association as a pest, they can have destructive effects on strawberries, laying larvae within the soil around strawberry plants where they feed on roots. When they emerge from the soil as adults they begin to feed on leaves & stems of the host plants meaning they can easily wipe out fields.
This photo is a single shot taken with the Laowa 100mm on a Sony A7R II (Full Frame sensor). Photo setting were 1/250, f5.6, ISO250 and a small a crop was applied in post and this image was taken at around 1:1 magnification. The image was processed in lightroom, photoshop and Topaz Denoise.

A Lanzada es una de las playas más singulares de Galicia. Tiene una longitud 2.400 metros por 60 metros de ancho. Se encuentra en el municipio de O Grove en un entorno natural rodeada de dunas de arena blanca y agua cristalina. Hay un paseo de madera que recorre todo el largo de la playa.

The Lanzada is one of the most unique beaches in Galicia. Its length is 2400 meters by 60 meters wide. It is located in the town of O Grove on a natural environment surrounded by white sand dunes and crystal clear water. There is a walk of wood that crosses the whole length of the beach.

Good morning everyone. For today I'm pleased to post a series on a Black Saddlebags (Tramea lacerata). Like the title indicates...it's the one and only Black Saddlebags I found perched all year and it also happened to be the very last Black Saddlebags I saw. Talk about lucking out at the very end of the season.
As for these photos, they're all of the same dragonfly, which was newly emerged. Unfortunately it wasn't perched in what was the best of places, which is typical for a newly emerged dragonfly. As a result the photos include a lot of surrounding clutter and a distracting background. Sorry about that. As for the dragonfly, I'm pretty sure it's a female, but I could be wrong since both gender look essentially the same when first emerged.

The whistling heron measures 53 to 64 cm in length and weighs 521 to 546 g. The southern subspecies is bigger but has a shorter bill in proportion to the body.
The overall impression of standing birds is gray, with flying birds showing conspicuous white rear parts (lower back, belly, and tail). In both subspecies, adults' upperparts except the lower back are blue-gray. The feathers of the sides of head, sides of the neck, breast, and scapular area are basically white but are stained gold to buff, perhaps by the powder down typical of herons or by secretions of the preen gland; the color varies from bird to bird. In the nominate subspecies, the crown and crest (separate plumes up to 4 cm long on the nape) are black and the upper wing coverts are cinnamon-colored; the crown and crest are slate-gray and the upper wing coverts are honey-colored (or "chamois") in fostersmithi. The bill is pink with blue to violet at the base and the distal third black, the legs are greenish and rather short, and there is a fairly big area of bare bluish skin around the eye.
Juveniles have the same overall pattern but are duller than adults, with the crown lighter, the breast light gray, and the throat and sides unstained white. Chicks are undescribed.[2]
The bird is named for its most common call, a "loud, flute-like whistled kleeer-er"[3] or "a high, reedy, complaining whistle, often doubled or uttered in a ser[ies], wueeee, wueeee,.…, easily imitated" [4] or "a distinctive, characteristic, far-carrying, melodious whistle" that "can be rendered 'kee, kee, kee.'" It may also give "a slow, drawn-out whistle" when taking off. The alarm call is a harsh quah-h-h.
Unlike other herons, in flight it has fast, duck-like wingbeats and usually does not retract its neck fully.
The adult humpback whale is generally 14–15 m (46–49 ft) long, though individuals up to 16–17 m (52–56 ft) long have been recorded. Females are usually 1–1.5 m (3 ft 3 in – 4 ft 11 in) longer than males.
The species can reach body masses of 40 metric tons (44 short tons). Calves are born at around 4.3 m (14 ft) long with a mass of 680 kg (1,500 lb)] The species has a bulky body with a thin rostrum and proportionally long flippers, each around one-third of its body length.[14][15] It has a short dorsal fin that varies from nearly nonexistent to somewhat long and curved.
Like other rorquals, the humpback has grooves between the tip of the lower jaw and the navel. The grooves are relatively few in number in this species, ranging from 14 to 35. The upper jaw is lined with baleen plates, which number 540–800 in total and are black in color.
The dorsal or upper side of the animal is generally black; the ventral or underside has various levels of black and white coloration. Whales in the southern hemisphere tend to have more white pigmentation. The flippers can vary from all-white to white only on the undersurface. Some individuals may be all white, notably Migaloo who is a true albino. The varying color patterns and scars on the tail flukes distinguish individual animals.[
The end of the genital slit of the female is marked by a round feature, known as the hemispherical lobe, which visually distinguishes males and females.[15][19]
Unique among large whales, humpbacks have bumps or tubercles on the head and front edge of the flippers; the tail fluke has a jagged trailing edge. The tubercles on the head are 5–10 cm (2.0–3.9 in) thick at the base and protrude up to 6.5 cm (2.6 in).
They are mostly hollow in the center, often containing at least one fragile hair that erupts 1–3 cm (0.39–1.18 in) from the skin and is 0.1 mm (0.0039 in) thick. The tubercles develop early in gestation and may have a sensory function, as they are rich in nerves. Sensory nerve cells in the skin are adapted to withstand the high water pressure of diving.
In one study, a humpback whale brain measured 22.4 cm (8.8 in) long and 18 cm (7.1 in) wide at the tips of the temporal lobes, and weighed around 4.6 kg (10 lb). The humpback's brain has a complexity similar to that of the brains of smaller whales and dolphins.
The structure of the eye indicates that eyesight is relatively poor, being only able to see silhouettes over long distances and finer details relatively close. Computer models of the middle ear suggest that the humpback can hear at frequencies between 15 Hz and 3 kHz "when stimulated at the tympanic membrane", and between 200 Hz and 9 kHz "if stimulated at the thinner region of the tympanic bone adjacent to the tympanic membrane". These ranges are consistent with their vocalization ranges.
As in all cetaceans, the respiratory tract of the humpback whale is connected to the blowholes and not to the mouth, although the species appears to be able to unlock the epiglottis and larynx and move them towards the oral cavity, allowing humpbacks to blow bubbles from their mouths. The vocal folds of the humpback are more horizontally positioned than those of land mammals which allows them to produce underwater calls. These calls are amplified by a laryngeal sac.

The Osprey is a large raptor, reaching as much as 2 feet in length with a 6-foot wingspan. Raptors hunt for food primarily on the wing by using their keen senses, especially vision, and kill prey with their talons. Sometimes called fish hawks thanks to their feeding habits, Ospreys have evolved specialized physical characteristics and behavior to assist in hunting and catching prey.
The Osprey is the only raptor whose outer toe is reversible, allowing it to grasp its prey with two toes in front and two behind. Ospreys excel at aerodynamic dives while hunting. They are known to soar high above their prey and then dive feet first at full force into the water, often fully submerging themselves to bring up their catch. Their feet have barbed pads that have evolved to help them hold onto slippery fish. They carry the fish head first to make as aerodynamic a flight as possible.
Ospreys inhabiting Everglades National Park are classified as North American Ospreys, one of four recognized subspecies of raptor. Although Ospreys are found nearly worldwide, numbers declined drastically during the 1950-70s because of eggshell thinning that resulted from pesticide poisoning, which was devastating to hatch rates. After the ban placed on DDT in 1972 and a change in the U.S. Coast Guard's policy of removing Osprey nests from channel markers, Osprey populations began to make a comeback.
This is along Highway 99 in Junction City, Lane County, Oregon USA. Flickr's maps are terrible, so the location I marked is not even close, just as Flickr Maps are not even close. They seem to allow all kinds of ways to screw up, name a place wrongly, etc. but trying to delete my whole entry completely from their stupid map program just doesn't seem to be a choice I can find. You may notice that I no longer even try to place very many of my photos on their maps. I even called them one time on telephone, and after a long time on hold, got a human being, and he said it wasn't his department. Did he offer to get the man who could help. NO! Terrible company!

In the United Kingdom it is designated as 'Nationally Rare'. UK distribution was thought to be restricted to the River Ouse in York but the species was rediscovered in the East Anglian Fens in 2014. The tansy beetle doesn’t travel far through its lifecycle and despite the presence of wings it rarely flies.

Not the best of macros due to its position beneath a tansy flower head restricting distribution of light, also hand held. Nevertheless posted it due to its rarity nationally. Hope to get one in the open on the tansy flower head next time.

Kiwifruit (often shortened to kiwi), or Chinese gooseberry, is the edible berry of several species of woody vines in the genus Actinidia. The most common cultivar group of kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis var. deliciosa 'Hayward') is oval, about the size of a large hen's egg: 5–8 centimetres (2–3 inches) in length and 4.5–5.5 cm (1+3⁄4–2+1⁄4 in) in diameter. Kiwifruit has a thin, fuzzy, fibrous, tart but edible, light brown skin and light green or golden flesh with rows of tiny, black, edible seeds. The fruit has a soft texture with a sweet and unique flavour.

The Tomato Frog is endemic to Madagascar. The common name comes from the bright red colour. When threatened, a tomato frog puffs up its body. When a predator grabs a tomato frog in its mouth, the frog's skin secretes a thick substance that gums up the predator's eyes and mouth, causing the predator to release the frog to free up its eyes. The gummy substance contains a toxin that occasionally causes allergic reactions in humans. The allergic reaction will not kill a human and the frog secretes it only when frightened.
The lifespan of the tomato frog can be from 6 to 8 years. When adult, the colours may vary from yellowish orange to deep red. Tomato frogs will reach sexual maturity in 9–14 months. Females are larger than males and can reach 4 inches in length. Males can reach 2 to 3 inches in length. Most females range from reddish-orange bright dark red. The bellies are usually more yellowish, and sometimes there are black spots on the throat. But males are not as brightly coloured but more of a duller orange or brownish-orange. Juveniles are also dull in colour and develop brighter colour as they mature. They are also on the endangered species list. They breed in the rainy season and are nocturnal. They tend to eat small insects and invertebrates.
When I was at the studio the guy said that sometimes frogs might leap onto your camera or you. That did happen to me but as instructed I did keep still, but with eyes shut, till the frog was removed. Given what the tomato frog does to humans I'm glad to say this was not one who jumped on me. That pleasure was the super tiger leg waxy monkey frog.

PATRON (IMO 9376464, MMSI 244227000) is a General Cargo Ship built in 2008 (16 years old) and currently sailing under the flag of Netherlands. Her length overall (LOA) is 118.9 meters and her width is 13.35 meters.
For this weeks Macro Monday theme-contraption. This steel fridge magnet is 2" in length, and is a note, list or card holder. This is a side view of it on it's back but when upright the sliding bearing holds paper in place! Quite useful except that I never use it! HMM!

Habitat; Hedgerows and flower meadows.
UK Status; Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.
Sicus ferrugineus is a species of fly from the genus Sicus in the family Conopidae. The body is reddish-brown to yellow-brown. The conspicuous head is large and bright yellow with large reddish eyes. The short antennae are brown, their second segment has the same length or it is longer than the third. The legs and also the last abdomen segments are often darkened. The abdomen is long and round in cross-section. The wings are transparent, but reddish-yellow coloured at the base. When in the resting position the abdomen is usually folded forward, as in this image.
They can be encountered from May through September feeding on nectar or pollen of various plant species. The larvae are endoparasites of Bumble Bees of the genus Bombus, (B. lapidarius, B terrestris, B. hortorum, B. pascuorum etc.). They feed on the bees internally and pupate and overwinter in their victims.

Large-tailed Nightjar, Caprimulgus macrurus, Burung Tukang
These is a medium-sized birds which are either nocturnal or crepuscular and thus, are sometimes known in Malay as ‘burung malas’ or a lazy bird because they sleep during the day. They have long slender wings, short legs and very short bills, and they feed on flying insects that they catch on the wing either at night or at dawn and dusk. They usually nest on the ground and lay only one or two egg each year. It is sometimes known as ‘tukang kubur’ or graveyard bird because they can be found nesting in cemetaries.
Burung Tukang adalah burung malam yang bebunyi kuat terutama bila ia ada berhampiran. Ia memakan serangga yang ditangkap dengan cara menyambarnya di udara. The red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a bird of prey that breeds throughout most of North America, from the interior of Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies. It is one of the most common members within the genus of Buteo in North America or worldwide.
The red-tailed hawk is one of three species colloquially known in the United States as the "chickenhawk", though it rarely preys on standard-sized chickens.
The red-tailed hawk occupies a wide range of habitats and altitudes including deserts, grasslands, coniferous and deciduous forests, agricultural fields and urban areas. It is legally protected in Canada, Mexico, and the United States by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
The 14 recognized subspecies vary in appearance and range, varying most often in color, and in the west of North America, red-tails are particularly often strongly polymorphic, with individuals ranging from almost white to nearly all black.
The red-tailed hawk is one of the largest members of the genus Buteo, typically weighing from (1.5 to 3.5 lb) and measuring (18–26 in) in length, with a wingspan from (3 ft 7 in–4 ft 8 in). This species displays sexual dimorphism in size, with females averaging about 25% heavier than males.
The diet of red-tailed hawks is highly variable and reflects their status as opportunistic generalists, but in North America, it is most often a predator of small mammals such as rodents. Prey that is terrestrial and diurnal is preferred so types such as ground squirrels are preferential where they naturally occur. Large numbers of birds and reptiles can occur in the diet in several areas and can even be the primary foods.
They hunt from a perch most often but can vary their hunting techniques where prey and habitat demand it.

One of the most beautiful gorges in Malá Fatra with bizarre rock formations, waterfalls, typical ladders, bridges and rock chains. Canyons and gorges of Jánošíkove diery formed as the water flowing from the Great and Little Rozsutec gradually washed away the limestone. There are three separate gorges: Dolné diery Lower Hollows, Horné diery Upper Hollows and Nové diery New Hollows. The gorges carry the name of Juraj Janošik, the hero of Slovak legends, a popular highwayman, who robbed the nobles and gave the loot to the poor. He was born in the nearby village Terchová, and is one of the symbols of Malá Fatra.
This winding Jánošíkove diery canyon is met with several waterfalls that have man made structures to help you ascend to the top of each of them. While the “assistance” these ladders provide seem almost more dangerous than just climbing the falls, they are actually quite fun to climb up. It gives an exciting perspective of the canyon that you just don’t normally see anywhere else in the world. A good grip, a bug for adventure, and an excitement to experience the lush forests on an adventure trail is what you will need to visit here. Oh, don’t forget your camera too. Jánošíkove diery is een kloof met watervallen gelegen in het Nationaal Park Malá Fatra van Slowakije. De kloof bestaat uit kalksteenformaties die zijn uitgeslepen door de rivier Dierový potok. De Dierový potok heeft zijn oorsprong op een bergpas met bergpieken van 1.610 m. Jánošíkove diery is te bewandelen via een zigzagpad van ladders en houten vlonderpaden, langs de blauwe wandelroute, die het gemakkelijkst te bereiken is vanaf de plaats Biely Potok. Nové Diery is ook te bereiken vanuit het toeristische plaatsje Štefanová. Vanuit Štefanová kan men de gele wandelroute te nemen die leidt naar het kruispunt Podžiar. Vanaf hier kan de dezelfde blauwe route naar de waterval Nové Diery worden genomen. Nové Diery bestaat uit vier watervallen. Vergeet je camera niet mee te nemen want je kan beren tegenkomen. Symphony of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship owned and operated by Royal Caribbean International. She was built in 2018 in the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, the fourth in Royal Caribbean's Oasis class of cruise ships. At 228,081 GT, she is the largest cruise ship in the world by gross tonnage, surpassing her sister ship Harmony of the Seas, also owned by Royal Caribbean International.
Symphony of the Seas measures 361.011 meters (1,184 ft 5.0 in) in length and has a gross tonnage of 228,081 across 18 decks. She is able to accommodate 5,518 passengers at double occupancy up to a maximum capacity of 6,680 passengers, as well as a 2,200-person crew. There are 16 decks for guest use, 22 restaurants, 4 pools, and 2,759 cabins.
Symphony of the Seas is about 30 meters (98 feet) longer than the largest military ships ever built, the U.S. Nimitz-class aircraft carriers.
Facilities include a children's water park, a full-size basketball court, an ice-skating rink, a zip line that is 10 decks high, a 1400-seat theater, an outdoor aquatic theater with Olympic-height platforms, and two 43-foot (13 m) rock-climbing walls. There is also a park containing over 20,000 tropical plants.
Symphony of the Seas is powered onboard by six marine-diesel sets each composed of three 16-cylinder Wärtsilä 16V46D common rail engines and three 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 12V46D engines.
The energy-efficient design of Symphony of the Seas enables it to accomplish shipboard power generation with 85 MW versus the 100 MW normally found on Oasis-class ships. One of the key design features is the use of only LED or fluorescent lights in order to avoid the heat generation from incandescent bulbs, thereby reducing the load on air conditioning systems.
Additional energy efficiency is accomplished by using a 2 MW steam turbine to recover waste heat from the engines and converting it into energy to power a portion of the onboard hotel load.
For propulsion, Symphony of the Seas uses three 20,000 kilowatt azipod main engines, which are electric thrusters. These engines are mounted under the stern of the ship and they each drive 20 foot wide rotatable propellers. In addition to the three main engines, there are four bow thrusters used for docking, each with 5,500 kilowatts of power or 7,380 horsepower.
Among the Oasis-class ships, Symphony of the Seas uses 25% less fuel due to the implementation of a new system that releases tiny air bubbles under the hull to enable the vessel to glide more smoothly through the water. The air layer also reduces excitation from the propellers, which cuts noise and vibration levels in the aft part of the ship.
