Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short, thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they comprise the family Otariidae, eared seals, which contains six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean. They have an average lifespan of 20–30 years. A male California sea lion weighs on average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 2.4 m (8 ft) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 1.8 m (6 ft) long. The largest sea lion is Steller's sea lion, which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 3.0 m (10 ft). Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a time and are known to eat about 5–8% of their body weight (about 6.8–15.9 kg (15–35 lb)) at a single feeding. The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. The Mustang was designed in April 1940 by a team headed by James H. Kindelberger of North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a requirement of the British Purchasing Commission. The Purchasing Commission approached North American Aviation to build Curtiss P-40 fighters under license for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Rather than build an old design from another company, North American Aviation proposed the design & production of a more modern fighter. The prototype NA-73X airframe was rolled out on 9 September 1940, 102 days after the contract was signed, and first flew on 26 October. The Mustang was designed to use the Allison V-1710 engine, which had limited high-altitude performance in its earlier variants. The aircraft was first flown operationally by the RAF as a tactical-reconnaissance aircraft and fighter-bomber (Mustang Mk I). Replacing the Allison with a Rolls-Royce Merlin resulted in the P-51B/C (Mustang Mk III) model, and transformed the aircraft's performance at altitudes above 15,000 ft without sacrificing range and allowing it to compete with the German Luftwaffe's fighters. The definitive version, the P-51D (as seen in the photograph above), was powered by the Packard V-1650-7, a license-built version of the two-speed, two-stage supercharged Merlin 66, and was armed with six .50 caliber AN/M2 Browning machine guns.

Intorno al 1618-20 il pittore fiammingo Anthonis van Dyck creò la sua prima opera "L'effusione dello Spirito Santo", che originariamente faceva parte di una serie di tre dipinti appesi nell'abbazia di Duinen a Bruges al più tardi dal 1660 e ora in si trova la pinacoteca di Sanssouci (Potsdam). Around 1618-20 the Flemish painter Anthonis van Dyck created his first work "The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit", which was originally part of a series of three paintings hanging in the Duinen Abbey in Bruges from 1660 at the latest and now in the Sanssouci Picture Gallery (Potsdam). The other two associated pictures - "The Mocked Christ" (Cat.No.770) and "The Two Johns" (Cat.No.799) by van Dyck - were originally in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, but have been between them since then 1945 war losses.

The "apostle bust" is the preliminary study for one of the apostle figures depicted on the "outpouring of the Holy Spirit". The central part of the work (half-length portrait without hands) is painted on paper and glued on oak wood. Later an extension was made all around. This addition was probably made by Jacob Jordaens, whose painting style is particularly evident with the hands.

Piotrkowska Street (pronounced: [pjɔtrˈkɔfska]; Polish: ulica Piotrkowska), also popularly known as Pietryna, is the main artery of Łódź, Poland, and one of the longest commercial thoroughfares in Europe, with a length of around 4.2 km. It is one of the major tourist attractions of the city. It runs longitudinally in the straight line between the Liberty Square (Plac Wolności) and the Independence Square (Plac Niepodległości).

 

From the very beginning this street was the central axis, around which the city grew bigger, and its development spontaneously gave the present shape to its centre. At first the city was mainly the highway, but later it changed into the city's showcase, the leisure and shopping centre, where the life of growing industrial agglomeration could be observed. The street deteriorated remarkably after World War II. Only after 1990 was it revitalized step by step and changed into a kind of pedestrian precinct. It has a function similar to a market square of old towns in other cities.

 

Nowadays the buildings, town-planning, institutions, restaurants, clubs and pubs situated next to this street, create its specific atmosphere, which is said to have a "cult" character reaching even outside of Łódź.[1]

Nesting: A loosely woven nest made up of various grasses, lined with roots, wool and feathers, usually hidden in the cavity of a tree or building structure; will also easily take to nesting in large wooden nest boxes. 4 to 7 light blue eggs are laid, 1 or 2 broods a year, in most countries in Europe, that are north of Spain.

I apologize for the length of this comment. Today is a day where hope and sadness are deeply intertwined.

 

On the one hand, there is the decision of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to reject all the appeals presented by the Venezuelan government, a ruling that upholds the important work of this institution.

 

In short, the Venezuelan government had requested that the Court disregard all the testimonies collected and verified by ICC Prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan regarding human rights violations. I can assure you that the number of cases submitted by persecuted Venezuelans or by the relatives of those killed is vast, with overwhelming evidence and testimonies documenting systematic and criminal human rights abuses, in some cases leading to people’s deaths. Until Prosecutor Khan took office, previous prosecutors at the ICC had not given due importance to these grave complaints.

 

On the other hand, we are mourning the murder of Lieutenant Ronald Leandro Ojeda Moreno. Born on September 2, 1991, he was a retired officer of the Venezuelan army and a political prisoner of the regime, guilty only of envisioning a better country with a future. He sought and was granted political asylum in Chile. About a week ago, Ojeda was kidnapped from his home by alleged agents of local security forces. They dragged him away in his underwear, in front of his terrified wife and son. From that moment, alarms were raised and Chile’s true public security forces began to act. Nearly a week later, his body was found buried in a camp near Santiago. It is highly probable that this kidnapping was carried out by hitmen linked to the Venezuelan government, in collaboration with local actors. In other words, the human rights of an exile were brutally violated. Lieutenant Ojeda was most likely murdered by the “long arm” of the Venezuelan regime.

 

The photo I share here is the print of my hand, painted with the colors of the Venezuelan flag, on cotton shirts. Together with a group of Venezuelans, we made and sold these shirts to raise funds and help, in any way we could, the many cases brought to our attention. It was little in the face of an ocean of suffering, but it was what we could do. Sadly, there will always be those who try to tarnish Ojeda’s memory by attributing crimes or misdeeds to him. But today, there are many of us who know who he truly was.

 

As of today, more than eight million Venezuelans have been forced to leave their homeland in search of safety and dignity.

Chinese brand of lens manufacturer 7Artisans has a 10mm focal length fisheye lens for cameras with full frame sensors.

 

The angle of coverage is very wide, 178º, in fact, in this test photo you can see my Nikon Z 7 II camera with that lens on the far left of the mirror.

 

It is marketed with different mounts, including Nikon's Z mount.

 

It does not have any electronic connection pin, so there is no communication between the camera and the lens, therefore the focal length or aperture parameters may be wrong or non-existent.

 

Obviously, the focus and aperture are done in manual mode (M), although you can interact with other camera parameters such as exposure time or ISO sensitivity.

 

You can also use that new function that many advanced cameras have, such as the so-called "focus contour" (or "focus peaking").

PRIMER TEST CON LA NUEVA LENTE OJO DE PEZ, 2023

 

La marca de fabricación de lentes, de origen chino, 7Artisans, tiene una lente ojo de pez con una distancia focal de 10mm para cámaras con sensores de formato completo.

 

El ángulo de cobertura es muy amplio, de 178º, de hecho, en esta foto de prueba se ve mi cámara Nikon Z 7 II con esa lente en el extremo izquierdo del espejo.

 

Se comercializa con diferentes monturas, incluida la montura Z de Nikon.

 

No tiene ningún pin de conexión electrónica, con lo que no hay comunicación entre la cámara y la lente, por tanto los parámetros de distancia focal o de apertura de diafragama pueden ser erróneos o inexistentes.

 

Evidentemente el enfoque y la apertura de diafragma se hacen en modo manual (M), aunque se puede interactuar con otros parámetros de la cámara como son el tiempo de exposición o la sensibilidad ISO.

 

También se puede usar esa nueva función que tienen muchas cámaras avanzadas como es el llamado "contorno de enfoque" (o "focus peaking").

Built in the 1960's, this terminal was owned by the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool until 2007 when it was purchased by Cargill Limited.

With a capacity of 237,240 metric tonnes, this is one of the largest of the grain terminals in the Port of Vancouver. It is serviced by the Canadian National Railway.

A large snow storm was approaching and whiting out everything in the distance.

 

This is a section of the Great Wall that is at MuTianYu. This section is a little farther out than other, more popular, sections, but it's worth the extra effort in my opinion. (Less tourists, better views)

Bixby Bridge (or Bixby Creek Bridge) is one of the most popular stops along the famous Big Sur coast in Central California. And deservedly so!

 

The handsome bridge is an engineering marvel. But it is also a dramatic sight as it straddles the canyon carved by Bixby Creek, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Santa Lucia Mountains on the other.

The bridge is 120 miles (190 km) south of San Francisco and 13 miles (21 km) south of Carmel in Monterey County on State Route 1.

People of Ventspils have managed to build a hill, which they named after the long-time mayor of the city – “Lembergs’ Trilby”. The unique hill in the coastal lowlands of Western Latvia was built artificially from debris and discarded priming materials. At the moment it is 58 m high and the length of track is 240 m ,it have risen up every year.

 

In wintertime it pleases downhill skiers and snowboard fans who wants to enjoy their own special Snowboard Park and Cross-Country Skiing Track. It is real fun to ride down the Sledding Track for adults and childen and the Tube Track.

 

The operation of the hill is ensured by five ski lifts, five snow blowers and a snow tractor. The tracks are lit and during winter professional instructors will assist those who are not so sure about their skiing skills. Rental of skiing and snowboarding equipment is available at the foot of a hill.

The Daytona Beach Pier is the most recognizable landmark on Daytona Beach and has been the center of beach life since the beginning of the community.

 

The original pier, constructed of palm logs, was built before the turn of the 20th century and extended 600 feet into the ocean. It was built by Thomas Keating and was known as the Keating Pier. It was located at the end of Main Street, where the present pier is located.

 

On January 20, 1920 a tremendous fire destroyed the pavilion and most of the pier. In 1924, Keating sold the remains of the pier to Jeter McMillan who tore it down and began construction of a new pier. The new Pier Casino opened on June 11, 1925. The pier was 1,000 feet in length and featured a Victorian style building. Its ornate ballroom could accommodate 2,000 dancers and hosted some of the top bands of the day. In addition to dances, the Pier Casino was the scene of charity balls, weddings, beauty contest, social events as well as civic meetings.

 

During the years of beach racing, some of the pilings were removed to allow race cars to pass under the pier. The Pier Casino was also a popular location for photos of the famous racers who came to Daytona Beach. Those photos were seen worldwide and helped Daytona Beach to become known as "The World's Most Famous Beach." The pier has changed ownership several times since McMillan died in 1946. In 2004, it was acquired by the city of Daytona Beach who then leased it to a corporate operator. In 2009, the city took operational control of the pier, completely refurbished it and sought a long-term, quality tenant for the casino building.

 

On June 5, 2012, the Daytona Beach Pier reopened and the restaurant Joe's Crab Shack opened its doors and began serving its unique brand of seafood and casual entertainment.

 

Over the years, the pier has withstood the constant pounding of the Atlantic surf, fire and hurricanes, but it still stands, just as it was built in 1925. It has been known as the Ocean Pier, Keating Pier, Pier Casino, Main Street Pier and now the Daytona Beach Pier, but to most people it is simply known as "the pier" - the most recognizable landmark on Daytona Beach and source of many Daytona memories.

Having talked at length about it in the “actual” version of this photo featuring 637 without branding, here’s a mock up of what a navy spare could have looked like. In some alternate timeline perhaps 616/7/8/9 went into full Uni4 livery instead of silver and 637/8/9 into navy spare so there were seven navy E400s to replace all seven navy Omnidekkas.

 

Or have it vice versa so that 637-9 the 4s as they are in real life, and the ex-lilacs as navy spares with possibly something like 640 done as well. Under normal operation they’d make up the numbers on the 4, but outside of term time or whenever else needed they wouldn’t look out of place on the 1 or 48.

 

Colour-specific spares aren’t a new thing, as around 2021/22 time orange line had one when 627 was branded up as a common vehicle for the 34/35/36, and even on navy line when 970 and 971 were briefly in plain silver and navy before they gained Easyrider wraps. Plus of course most of the vehicles carry branding for all routes of the same colour now, such as the old 17s now being 15/16/17.

 

Navy line is a bit weird by nature, however, using two main corridors either side of the River Trent and converging at Clifton. The 49 can be ignored as a Parliament Street route, hence its omission, so the side branding is “Clifton > Queens Drive or Trent Bridge > Railway Station > City” to provide a rather generalised outline of the navy route core. The 3 tends to keep out of whatever the other TBG navy routes are doing so is also omitted.

 

As for the frequency branding, I used the 20 minute one off the 1 because it was the lowest, although I could have possibly left it off completely as none of the navy line frequencies bear any relation to each other. Besides, when NCT changed the frequency to say “up to every XYZ” instead of “from every XYZ”, I never understood if it meant “up to” as in you could be waiting up to 20 minutes, or if the frequency went up to every 20 minutes but sometimes dropped to less often.

 

Shifting the focus over to the actual Photoshop edit itself, this is the first edit I’ve done in nearly three years that isn’t an April Fools one. I only did it on a whim after writing the photo description mentioning the idea of navy spares and realised it’d be a very simple task to make one as a demonstration.

 

For the benefit of gullible people with no attention span I’ve highlighted that this is, in fact, an edited photo in the corner. You know, just in case some plonker tries to edit 637 on bustimes, because unfortunately there are some people on the internet nowadays who genuinely are that stupid. Previously when I’ve made photo edits such things weren’t even a concern, but that’s just the state of the world in 2026, sadly.

These powerful vessels were put on mass production during first year of The Great Insectoid War and were built around mostly unused pre-war design. Very few of these ships entered service just before the war, but for the time it was unnecessary. Its primary weapon - heavy railgun that almost a half of the ship long - was in fact so powerful, that it could destroy vessels up to light cruisers in just one shot, but this force wasn't needed for peacekeeping and pirate hunting role that Federation Navy executed back then. Considering the price of these ships, the command of the fleet did not see any prospects in their use and believed that the available types of ships in service were more than enough to withstand most threats.

But when Federation faced new and unexpected enemy enormous frontal firepower that Xyphos provided showed as quite an effective measure against invaders. Strategists loved the ship's ability to carry out swift and devastating attacks, which was provided by a large number of weapons directed forward, powerful engines, heavy energy shields and quite good armor. The disadvantage, however, was the rather low flight range, which limited the movement of these ships outside the naval formations, which was not a big problem, given the nature of their use.

P.S. Yeah, i know that it should be "Xiphos", but when I noticed this grammar mistake it was too late. Well, I could fix it, but I'm too lazy. In fact, I'm so lazy, that I couldn't write this backstory for a month. And that's why it took so long to post this MOC.

Widespread in northern and southern UK, but mostly absent from Central and South West England.

The Common Crossbill is a large finch with distinctive forked tail and a bizarre cross-tipped bill, which it uses to prise out the seeds from pine cones before taking out the seeds with its tongue, though it will occasionally eat buds and shoots of other plants and insects can be taken in spring and summer. The species’ reliance on pine seeds mean it is largely restricted to coniferous woodland but can also be found on heathland with a sufficient number of pine trees.

Males have a bright red head, while females are a yellowish-green with hints of grey. Males have bright red plumage, whereas females are a yellowish-green with a yellow rump. They are heavy-set birds, weighing roughly twice as much as a robin.

It can be difficult to spot but is often seen in large flocks in the tops of trees, although it regularly comes down to pools to drink. It is resident all year-round, but in some years 'irruptions' occur when it becomes widespread and numerous and spreads across the country in search of feeding opportunities. At these times it may appear in areas where it is not normally seen and could be joined by Continental birds looking for food which may stay to breed. Crossbills are known collectively as a "crookedness" or a "warp" of Crossbills.

Not to be confused with the Scottish Crossbill and Parrot Crossbill. These species are very difficult to tell apart by sight alone, but the Scottish crossbill is only found in northern Scotland. It is the UK’s only endemic bird species, meaning it is found nowhere else in the world. The Parrot Crossbill is very rare in the UK, with only a handful of breeding pairs in Scotland and occasional visitors from Europe. The Common Crossbill population is thought to be stable, with an estimated 40,000 breeding pairs across the UK. The Parrot and Scottish Crossbill are rarer, with estimated breeding populations of just 50 and 6,800 pairs respectively.

Red crossbills are monogamous, seeming to stay in pairs during the year. Pairs will form within flocks. A male sings from a perch and makes display flights to attract a female. During the breeding season males are aggressive towards one another. Courtship involves the male feeding the female and the pair grabbing one another by the bill (called billing). The breeding cycle is linked more closely to food availability than to season, and the birds can breed at almost any time of the year, even in mid-winter if the source of seeds is abundant. One or two broods are produced per season, depending on the range. The female constructs the nest, on a high horizontal branch in a conifer. 3 to 4 eggs are laid, pale blue-green and spotted with lavender and brown. Incubation is by the female, for about 12 to 16 days, while the male feeds her by regurgitation. The male feeds the chicks for five days, then both parents feed the young. At about 18 to 22 days old they leave the nest, and are fed by their parents for another month.

 

The bill of a chick is not crossed when it hatches, but it crosses as they grow. After 45 days their bills are crossed enough for them to extract seeds themselves. The bills of Common Crossbills can cross either way.

Well, it is technically ankle length, but really, who doesn't like to flash the odd leg now and again, especially with such a revealing side slit. Not a new dress, but it is popular.

This lovely small 20mm in length moth flew across my garden lawn yesterday, I spotted the red flashes as it wobbly flew around.

I grabbed my camera and managed to take several images.

I had noticed this moth flying awkwardly, but I really didn't know what the problem was?

Whilst I was reviewing the images, it became clear it had a damaged wing section on the bottom left as viewed from behind.

It's difficult to know the backstory of this beautiful little moth, but with delicate wings, these things sometimes happen, unfortunately.

It was still getting around, so it was alright, I suppose.

The red and black marking on these particular moths indicates they are poisonous to eat.

The mothes and caterpillars become poisonous by eating yellow ragwort flowers that are themselves poisonous.

Their caterpillars are yellow and black and are also poisonous to predators.

The Cinnabar name indicates the red highlights as Cinnabar is a vibrant red colour.

There are now over 30 wolf packs in Switzerland. These shy animals are nevertheless difficult to find and photograph. However, as with all animals, some individuals are less afraid of people and are curious. Luckily I met such a wolf last year, lucky for me (Canon, focal length approx. 2000 mm and cropped).

The Aletsch Glacier (German: Aletschgletscher, German pronunciation: [ˈalɛtʃˌɡlɛtʃɐ]) or Great Aletsch Glacier (Grosser Aletschgletscher) is the largest glacier in the Alps. It has a length of about 23 km (14 mi) (2014), has about a volume of 15.4 km3 (3.7 cu mi) (2011), and covers about 81.7 km2 (31.5 square miles) (2011) in the eastern Bernese Alps in the Swiss canton of Valais. The Aletsch Glacier is composed of four smaller glaciers converging at Konkordiaplatz, where its thickness was measured by the ETH to be still near 1 km (3,300 ft). It then continues towards the Rhône valley before giving birth to the Massa. The Aletsch Glacier is – like most glaciers in the world today – a retreating glacier. As of 2016, since 1980 it lost 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) of its length, since 1870 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi), and lost also more than 300 metres (980 ft) of its thickness.

 

The whole area, including other glaciers is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch Protected Area, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

 

Geography

 

The Aletsch Glacier is one of the many glaciers located between the cantons of Bern and Valais on the Bernese Alps located east of the Gemmi Pass. The whole area is considered to be the largest glaciated area in western Eurasia. The Fiescher and Aar Glaciers lying on the east have similar extensions.

 

Except the Finsteraarhorn, all the highest summits of the Bernese Alps are located within the drainage basin of the glacier. The Jungfrau and Mönch constitute the northern boundary; the Gross Fiescherhorn and Gross Wannenhorn lie on its east side; finally the culminating point, the Aletschhorn (4,193 m (13,757 ft)) is located on the west side.

 

Before reaching the maximum flow, four smaller glaciers converge at Konkordiaplatz:

 

From the western mouth flows the Grosser Aletschfirn, which runs along the northern foot of the Aletschhorn and Dreieckhorn. The Grosser Aletschfirn is supplied from the north by three notable firns: the Äbeni Flue-Firn, the Gletscherhornfirn, and the Kranzbergfirn. All of these firns have their starting points at around 3,800 m (12,500 ft). From the Äbeni Flue-Firn to the Konkordiaplatz, the Grosser Aletschfirn is 9 km (5.6 mi) long and is on average about 1.5 km (0.93 mi) wide. On the west, the Grosser Aletschfirn connects with the Langgletscher over the 3,158 m (10,361 ft) high glacier pass, the Lötschenlücke, into the Lötschental.

 

From the northwestern mouth flows the Jungfraufirn. This firn in fact represents the straight continuation of the Aletsch Glacier, yet is the shortest of the four tributary glaciers. It has its origin on the southern flank of the Mönch and at the eastern flank of the Jungfrau with the Jungfraujoch in-between. Up to the Konkordiaplatz, the Jungfraufirn is a scarce 7 km (4.3 mi) long, and returns to flank the Kranzberg in the west and the Trugberg in the east. At its highest point, it is 2 km (1.2 mi) wide, and further down it is still a good 1 km (0.62 mi) wide.

From the northern mouth flows the Ewigschneefäld ("Eternal snow field"), where its starting point takes the east flank of the Mönch. In an elbow, it flanks from Trugberg in the west and the Gross Fiescherhorn and Grünhorn in the east, flowing on to the Konkordiaplatz. Up to here, it is about 8 km (5.0 mi) long and averages about 1.2 km (0.75 mi) wide.

 

The mouth at the Konkordiaplatz it follows over a rise with a descent from 25 to 30 percent; here, the glacier is sharply split. Against the north is the Ewigschneefäld over the snow-covered pass of the Unners Mönchsjoch (3,518 m (11,542 ft)), connected with the catchment area of the Ischmeer (Wallis German for "Ice Sea"). Through the Obere Mönchsjoch (3,624 m (11,890 ft)) between the Mönch and the Trugberg stands a connection to the Jungfraufirn.

 

From the east, the smallest firn arrives at the Konkordiaplatz: the Grüneggfirn. Its northern arm begins below the Grünegghorn (3,860 m (12,660 ft)). The southern arm collects its snow and ice in the pot flanked by the Wyssnollen, Fiescher Gabelhorn (3,866 m (12,684 ft)), and the Chamm. Between the peaks Wyssnollen and Grünhörnli another glacier pass, the Grünhornlücke (3,279 m (10,758 ft)), connects to the Fieschergletscher. The Grüneggfirn enters the Konkordiaplatz in a gap between the mountainsides Grünegg to the north and the Fülberg to the south. On the western side of the Fülberg the Konkordia hut (mountain hut) overlooks the whole Konkordiaplatz at an altitude of 2,850 m (9,350 ft).

 

South of Konkordiaplatz, the glacier runs towards the valley of the Oberwallis (Upper Valais); on the east side, near Bettmeralp, lies a small glacier lake, Märjelensee (2,301 m (7,549 feet)); from the western side used to enter the Mittelaletschgletscher, but since the end of the 20th century the connection with the Aletsch Glacier has been lost. Further down, until about 1880, the Oberaletschgletscher did also enter the Aletsch Glacier at its mouth. But since then both glaciers have been retreating so far that they do not connect anymore (the Upper Aletsch Glacier did retreat about 1.3 km (0.81 mi) from its connecting point with the Aletsch Glacier), but both serve now only as the source of the river Massa. The river flows through the Lake Gibidum (a reservoir, and coincidentally representing the glacier's mouth region in the 19th century, which is a retreat of more than 4 km (2.5 mi)) and a gorge of the same name before reaching the Rhône near Brig.

 

Tourism

 

The area of the Aletsch Glacier and some surrounding valleys is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, thus it is protected and the facilities are mostly restricted to the external zones. The region between Belalp, Riederalp and Bettmeralp (which is called Aletsch Region) in Valais gives access to the lower part of the glacier. The Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn are popular view points and are accessible by cable car. The Massa river can be crossed since 2008 by a suspension bridge, thus allowing hikes between the left and the right part of the glacier.

 

The Jungfraujoch railway station (3,450 m) gives a direct access to the upper Aletsch Glacier as well as the normal route to the Jungfrau. It can be reached only from Interlaken in the canton Bern. Hiking paths pass the Konkordia Hut or the Hollandia Hut, eventually reaching other glaciers in the massif.

 

On the Riederfurka, at 2,065 metres between Riederalp and the glacier, is located the historic Villa Cassel, former summer residence of many famous and influential guests from the worlds of politics and finance. The house is now one of the centers of the environmental organization Pro Natura, which hosts a permanent exhibition about the site.

Also at the mouth of the Konkordiaplatz from the east is the small but important Grüneggfirn (3 km long and averaging 600 m wide). This firn is connected in the over the glacier pass Grünhornlücke (3280 m high) to the Fiescher Glacier in the east.

 

From the Konkordiaplatz, the Aletsch Glacier has a width of approximately 1.5 km and moves at a rate of 180 m per year to the southeast on course with the Rhône valley, bordering the Dreieckhorn in the west and the great Wannenhorn in the east. It then takes a great right turn and bends ever closer to the southwest, running through the edge of the Eggishorn and Bettmerhorn of the Rhône valley. The lowest part of the great Aletsch Glacier is largely covered with detritus of the lateral and medial moraines. The glacier's toe currently lies about 1560 m high, far beneath the local tree line. From it springs the Massa stream, which flows through the Massa Canyon and is used to generate hydroelectric power. It continues through the upper half of the Brig, eventually entering into the Rhône.

 

The great Aletsch Glacier shows considerable ice cover. At the Konkordiaplatz, it has an ice cover of more than 900 m, but as it moves to the south, the greater part of the ice melts, gradually decreasing the cover to around 150 m.

 

The characteristically dark medial moraine, situated almost in the middle of the glacier, runs protracted in two bands from the Konkordiaplatz along the whole length to the glacier's toe-zone. This medial moraine is collected from the ice of three large ice fields, which all run together. The westernmost medial moraine has been named the Kranzbergmoräne, and the easternmost carries the name Trugbergmoräne.

 

Formation and evolution

 

The Aletsch Glacier resulted from the accumulation and compaction of snow. Glaciers generally form where snow and ice accumulation exceed snow and ice melt. As the snow and ice thicken it reaches a point where it begins to move due to a combination of gravity and pressure of the overlying snow and ice.

 

During the last glacial periods, the Aletsch Glacier was much larger than now. 18,000 years ago the lower part of the ridge, between Riederalp and the glacier, was completely covered by ice. Only the summits of the Bettmerhorn, Eggishorn and the Fusshörner were above the glacier. After an important retreat, the glacier again advanced 11,000 years ago during the last glacial period. The glacier reached the Rhône valley, and its ice the Riederfurka. Remaining moraines are still visible in the Aletsch Forest.

 

Since the last glaciation, the glacier generally retreated. However slight climatic changes happened and, in 1860, the glacier was 3 km longer and the ice level 200 m higher.

 

As for many other glaciers, records show a major longer-term retreat trend. The Aletsch Glacier receded by 3.2 km (2.0 mi) since 1870, including 1.3 km (0.81 mi) since 1980.[6] A record retreat of 114.6 metres (376 ft) happened in 2006 alone.

 

Since the end of the Little Ice Age in 1850 the glacier has lost 20 percent of its ice mass, considerably less than other glaciers in Switzerland, which have lost up to 50 percent. This is explained with the large size of the Aletsch Glacier, which reacts much slower to climate change than smaller glaciers. It is however estimated that, by 2100, the glacier will have only one tenth of its 2018 ice mass.

On August 18, 2007, photographer Spencer Tunick used hundreds of naked people in a "living sculpture" on the Aletsch Glacier in a photo shoot which he said was intended to draw attention to global warming and the shrinking of the world's glaciers. The temperature was about 10 °C (50 °F) at the time of the photo shoot. The 600 participants on the shrinking glacier said that they had volunteered for Tunick (a collaboration with Greenpeace) to let the world know about the effects of global warming on the melting Swiss glaciers.

Der Grosse Aletschgletscher ist der flächenmässig grösste und längste Gletscher der Alpen. Er befindet sich auf der Südabdachung der Berner Alpen im Schweizer Kanton Wallis. Die Länge des Gletschers beträgt 22,6 km, die Fläche wird mit 78,49 km² angegeben. Der Aletschgletscher entwässert über die Massa in die Rhone. Die Fläche des gesamten Einzugsgebiets der Massa beträgt 195 km², wovon 1973 etwa zwei Drittel vergletschert waren. Oft werden bei der Flächenangabe der Ober- und Mittelaletschgletscher einbezogen, da diese früher mit dem Grossen Aletschgletscher verbunden waren. Die gesamte vergletscherte Fläche einschliesslich dieser Gletscher betrug 1973 etwa 128 km², für das Jahr 1863 wird eine Fläche von 163 km² angenommen.

 

Ursprung am Konkordiaplatz

 

Der Ursprung des Grossen Aletschgletschers liegt in der rund 3800 m hoch gelegenen Jungfrau-Region. Am Konkordiaplatz (♁645905 / 150101), einer 6 km² grossen und nur wenig geneigten Eisfläche, fliessen drei mächtige Firnströme zusammen:

 

Von Westen mündet der Grosse Aletschfirn, der entlang dem Nordfuss von Aletschhorn und Dreieckhorn fliesst. Der Grosse Aletschfirn wird von Norden her durch drei weitere bedeutende Firne gespeist, nämlich durch den Ebnefluhfirn, den Gletscherhornfirn und den Kranzbergfirn. Alle diese Firne nehmen ihren Ausgangspunkt auf rund 3800 m ü. M. Einschliesslich des Ebnefluhfirns hat der Grosse Aletschfirn bis zum Konkordiaplatz eine Länge von 9 km und ist durchschnittlich fast 1,5 km breit. Gegen Westen ist der Grosse Aletschfirn über den 3173 m ü. M. hohen Gletscherpass der Lötschenlücke mit dem Langgletscher verbunden, der ins Lötschental abfliesst.

 

Von Nordwesten mündet der Jungfraufirn, der zwar die gerade Fortsetzung des Aletschgletschers darstellt, jedoch der kürzeste der drei Tributärgletscher ist. Er hat seinen Ursprung an der Südflanke des Mönchs, am Jungfraujoch und an der Ostflanke der Jungfrau. Bis zum Konkordiaplatz legt der Jungfraufirn eine Wegstrecke von knapp 7 km zurück und wird dabei im Westen vom Kranzberg, im Osten vom Trugberg flankiert. Er ist in seinem oberen Teil 2 km, weiter unten noch gut 1 km breit.

 

Von Norden mündet das Ewigschneefeld, das seinen Ausgangspunkt an der Ostflanke des Mönchs nimmt und in einem Bogen, flankiert vom Trugberg im Westen sowie dem Gross Fiescherhorn und dem Grünhorn im Osten, zum Konkordiaplatz fliesst. Bis hierher ist es ungefähr 8 km lang und durchschnittlich 1,2 km breit. Die Mündung in den Konkordiaplatz erfolgt über einen Steilhang mit einem Gefälle von 25 bis 30 %; der Gletscher ist hier stark zerklüftet. Gegen Norden ist das Ewigschneefeld über den firnbedeckten Pass des Unteren Mönchsjochs (3529 m ü. M.) mit dem Einzugsgebiet des Unteren Grindelwaldgletschers verbunden. Durch das Obere Mönchsjoch (3627 m ü. M.) zwischen dem Mönch und dem Trugberg besteht eine Verbindung zum Jungfraufirn. Ferner mündet am Konkordiaplatz von Osten noch der wesentlich kleinere Grüneggfirn (3 km lang und durchschnittlich 600 m breit). Dieser ist nach Osten über den Gletscherpass der Grünhornlücke (3280 m ü. M.) mit dem Fieschergletscher verbunden.

 

Weiterer Verlauf

 

Vom Konkordiaplatz aus bewegt sich der Eisstrom mit einer Breite von ungefähr 1,5 km und mit einer Geschwindigkeit von bis zu 180 Metern pro Jahr nach Südosten in Richtung Rhonetal, gesäumt vom Dreieckhorn im Westen und dem Gross Wannenhorn im Osten. Er zeichnet dann eine grosse Rechtskurve und biegt immer mehr nach Südwesten ab, nun durch den Grat des Eggishorns und Bettmerhorns vom Rhonetal getrennt. Der unterste Teil des Grossen Aletschgletschers ist weitgehend durch das Geschiebematerial von Seiten- und Mittelmoränen bedeckt. Die Gletscherzunge liegt derzeit auf rund 1'560 Meter Höhe, weit unterhalb der lokalen Waldgrenze. Aus ihr entspringt der Bach Massa, welcher nach der Massaschlucht und einer Nutzung in einem Wasserkraftwerk, in Bitsch, oberhalb von Naters, in die Rhone (Rotten) fliesst.

 

Der Grosse Aletschgletscher weist beachtliche Eisdicken auf. Am Konkordiaplatz hat der Gletscher eine Eisdicke von mehr als 900 Metern, gegen Süden nimmt die Mächtigkeit des Eises allmählich auf rund 150 m ab. Charakteristisch sind die beiden dunklen, fast in der Mitte des Aletschgletschers gelegenen Moränenspuren, welche sich ab dem Konkordiaplatz auf der gesamten Länge bis in den Zungenbereich hinziehen. Es sind die Mittelmoränen, die das Eis der drei Hauptfirne voneinander trennen. Die westliche Mittelmoräne wird auch Kranzbergmoräne genannt, die östliche trägt den Namen Trugbergmoräne.

 

Gletscherschwankungen

 

In seinem Hochstadium während der Kleinen Eiszeit um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts erstreckte sich der Grosse Aletschgletscher noch rund 2,5 km weiter talabwärts. Aufgrund der allgemeinen Erwärmung seit etwa 1870 hat er besonders unterhalb des Konkordiaplatzes massiv an Volumen eingebüsst und sowohl an den Seiten als auch im Zungenbereich Flächen von mehreren Quadratkilometern freigegeben. Der einstmalige, in der Neuzeit höchste Gletscherstand kann gut an den noch fast vegetationslosen Seitenmoränen abgeschätzt werden. Seit 1850 hat die Eisdicke um teilweise über 100 m abgenommen. Früher waren auch die Eisströme des Oberaletschgletschers und des Mittelaletschgletschers direkt mit dem Grossen Aletschgletscher verbunden.

 

In der Senke zwischen dem Strahlhorn und dem Eggishorn liegt der Märjelensee, der im 19. Jahrhundert beim Gletscherhochstand zu einem Gletscherrandsee aufgestaut wurde. Seine wiederholten plötzlichen Ausbrüche durch Gletscherspalten verursachten immer wieder starke Schadenshochwasser der Massa hin zum Rhonetal.

 

Gegen kurzfristige Klimaschwankungen ist der Gletscher aufgrund seiner grossen Masse relativ immun. Während viele andere Gletscher Ende der 1970er Jahre bis Anfang der 1980er Jahre vorstiessen, reagierte der Aletschgletscher auf die vorübergehende Abkühlung kaum – ebenso wenig wie auf die warmen Jahre seit 1983. Aufgrund der zunehmend extremen Hitze der letzten Jahre zieht er sich aber nun doch – wie alle übrigen Alpengletscher – deutlich verstärkt zurück.

 

Die relative Trägheit in seinen Reaktionen auf Klimaschwankungen macht den Aletschgletscher auch zu einem idealen Untersuchungsobjekt zur Erforschung der Klimaentwicklung im Alpenraum. Die Längenschwankungen des Aletschgletschers in der Vergangenheit dürften sogar eine Rekonstruktion aller grösseren Klimaveränderungen der letzten 3200 Jahre erlauben. Die Bestimmung der verschiedenen Längenstadien des Aletschgletschers in der Vergangenheit erfolgt durch die Radiokohlenstoffdatierung fossiler Baumstämme, die der Gletscher bei einem früheren Vorstoss einmal überfahren haben muss und nun während seines aktuellen Rückzuges wieder freigibt. Der Befund fossiler Böden und von Wurzelwerk garantiert dabei, dass es sich bei dem Fundort auch um den Wuchsstandort des fossilen Baumes handelt. Durch Zählung der Jahresringe der geborgenen Stämme kann sogar der Zeitraum bestimmt werden, während dessen der Aletschgletscher den Fundort nicht erreicht hat. Mit dieser Methode wurde festgestellt, dass der Aletschgletscher bis etwa 1200 v. Chr. um einiges kleiner gewesen sein muss als gegen Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts. Für die Jahre etwa von 1200 bis 1110 v. Chr., 850 bis 750 v. Chr. und 350 bis 250 v. Chr. sind Vorstösse festgestellt worden. Dabei ist der Aletschgletscher von 900 bis 400 v. Chr. jedoch kleiner gewesen als am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts, genauso wie von etwa 100 v. Chr. bis ins Jahr 250. Um das Jahr 300 ist eine Gletscherlänge vergleichbar der des Höchststandes im 19. Jahrhundert festzustellen.

 

Laut der letzten Studie der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Juni 2020) schmolz die Oberfläche des Grossen Aletschgletscher zwischen den Jahren 2001 und 2014 um mehr als fünf Meter pro Jahr in den unteren Lagen.

Der Aletschgletscher galt schon früh als besondere Sehenswürdigkeit für Reisende und als willkommenes Untersuchungsobjekt für Forschende. Forschungsstationen gibt es seit 1937 auf dem Jungfraujoch und seit 1976 auf der Riederfurka oberhalb der Riederalp. Durch zahlreiche Luftseilbahnen besonders gut erschlossen ist der Berggrat zwischen dem Riederhorn und dem Eggishorn, der sehr schöne Einblicke in den Zungenbereich und den unteren Teil des Gletschers gewährt. Mit dem Bau der Jungfraubahn auf das Jungfraujoch (auf der Sphinx 3571 m ü. M.) wurde 1912 auch für nicht berggewohnte Leute ein Blick in den oberen Teil des Gletschers ermöglicht.

 

Am Felshang des Faulbergs östlich des Konkordiaplatzes stehen auf 2850 m ü. M. die Konkordiahütten des Schweizer Alpen-Clubs SAC. Sie dienen als wichtiger Etappenort auf der hochalpinen Gletscherroute vom Jungfraujoch oder vom Lötschental in das Gebiet des Grimselpasses.

Das Gebiet des Grossen Aletschgletschers ist zusammen mit dem einzigartigen Aletschwald und den umliegenden Regionen seit dem 13. Dezember 2001 Bestandteil des UNESCO-Weltnaturerbes Schweizer Alpen Jungfrau-Aletsch.

The Main Street Bridge, officially the John T. Alsop Jr. Bridge, is a bridge crossing the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida. It was the second bridge built across the river. It carries four lanes of traffic, and is signed as US 1/US 90 (SR 5/SR 10). A lift bridge, it opened in July 1941 at a cost of $1.5 million. In 1957 it was named after Mayor John T. Alsop Jr., but continues to be known, even on road signs, as the Main Street Bridge. It remains one of the most recognizable features of the Downtown Jacksonville skyline.

 

Construction of the Main Street Bridge began in 1938 at a cost of $1.5 million by the Mount Vernon Bridge Company. It was a War Department permitted in 1936 prior to World War II. The Main Street Bridge took three years to be built and had a dedication ceremony on July 17, 1941. The bridge was built as a vertical lift bridge with use of trusses in order to lift up to accommodate ships passing underneath it. The official name of the bridge, John T. Alsop Jr. Bridge, was dedicated in 1957 to former mayor of Jacksonville John T. Alsop. The bridge carries traffic to and from San Marco, Southbank, Downtown Jacksonville and Interstate 95. In 2014 the Main Street Bridge underwent an $11 million renovation to upgrade metal barriers and patch sidewalks.

Though mostly absent from Southern and Eastern England, the Common Hawker is common in Western England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland in moorland habitats with acidic pools.

 

Similar in appearance to other blue-spotted hawker species, (Southern, Migrant, Azure Hawkers and the Hairy Dragonfly), but only shares its moorland habitat with the Azure Hawker and in all of these other species the leading wing vein (costa) is brown and not yellow as in the Common Hawker.

 

Solitary Common Hawkers are often seen feeding in woodland rides and other sheltered sites at a considerable distance from breeding sites. Males spend long periods in flight and rarely perch but when they do settle they use tree branches and trunks, (as in this photograph), rather than boulders and paths that the Azure Hawker prefers and are usually alert and difficult to approach.

 

Identification: Paired spots on each abdominal segment. Yellow costa (leading wing vein). Broad stripes on side of the thorax.

Male: Blue eyes. Black with blue spots on the abdomen and thin yellow stripes along the dorsal surface of the thorax.

Female: Brown-green eyes. Brown with yellow, blue or green spots on the abdomen and very small/absent stripes along the dorsal surface of the thorax.

 

Hawkers are the largest and fastest flying dragonflies, catching their insect-prey mid-air and can hover or fly backwards.

The 25 de Abril Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tagus river. It has a total length of 2,277 metres, making it the 46th longest suspension bridge in the world.

From its inauguration in 6 August 1966 up to 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazar), after Portuguese Prime Minister António de Oliveira Salazar, who ordered its construction. After the Carnation Revolution, which overthrew the remnants of Salazar's regime, the bridge was renamed for April 25, the date of the revolution. It is also commonly called the Tagus River Bridge.

Later changes had to be made due to the rapid increase in population. In the 1990s, a fifth car lane was added, and in 1999, a lower deck, used as a railway track, which was planned since the beginning, was finally built. Today, the upper deck carries six car lanes while the lower deck carries a double track railway, electrified at 25 kV AC.

From the late 19th century, there had been proposals to build a bridge across the Tagus. In 1929, the idea advanced when the Portuguese engineer and entrepreneur, António Bello, requested a government concession for a railway crossing between Lisbon and Montijo (where the Vasco da Gama Bridge, the second bridge serving Lisbon, was later built in 1998). As a result, the Minister of Public Works, Duarte Pacheco, created a commission in 1933 to analyse the request. The commission reported in 1934, and proposed building a road and rail bridge. Bids were obtained, but the proposal was subsequently put aside in favor of a bridge crossing the river at Vila Franca de Xira, 35 kilometres north of Lisbon.

In 1953, a new government commission started work and, in 1958, recommended building the bridge, choosing the southern anchor point adjacent to the recently built monument to Christ the King (Cristo-Rei). In 1959, the international invitation to tender for the project received four bids. In 1960, the winner was announced as a consortium headed by the United States Steel Export Company, which had also submitted a bid in 1935. The American School of Lisbon was founded largely to educate the children of the American engineers brought to Portugal to work on the construction of the bridge.

Construction began on 5 November 1962. Forty-five months later, six months ahead of schedule, the bridge was inaugurated on 6 August 1966. Presiding at the ceremony was the President of Portugal, Admiral Américo Thomaz. Also present were the Prime-Minister, António de Oliveira Salazar, and the Patriarch of Lisbon, Cardinal Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira. The bridge was named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazar), after Prime Minister Salazar.

United States Steel International Inc., based in New York, was prime contractor for the bridge. Morrison-Knudsen of Portugal Ltd., an American firm based in Boise, Idaho, was U.S. Steel's principal associate. Morrison-Knudsen had previously worked on the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The bridge was designed by Steinman, Boynton, Gronquist and London of New York, and Tudor Engineering Company of San Francisco. The steel was imported from the US. Four workers lost their lives, out of a total of 3,000 who worked on the site. Construction took a total of 2,185,000 man-hours of work. The total cost of the bridge came to 2.2 billion Portuguese escudos, or US$32 million (US$225 million in 2011 adjusted for inflation).

Soon after the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the bridge was renamed the 25 de Abril Bridge, the day the revolution had occurred. A symbol of those times was captured on film, with citizens removing the large brass letters spelling "Salazar" from one of the main pillars of the bridge and painting a provisional "25 de Abril" in its place.

The upper platform, running 70 m above water, had four car lanes, two in each direction, with a dividing guardrail. On 23 July 1990, the guardrail was removed and a fifth, reversible lane was created. On 6 November 1998, the side walls were extended and reinforced to make space for the present six lanes. Cars crossing the bridge make a peculiar hum because the two inner lanes are made of metallic grating rather than asphalt to minimize aerodynamic forces by means of pressure equalization.

Since 30 June 1999, the lower platform has carried a double track railway. To accommodate that, the bridge underwent extensive structural reinforcements, including a second set of main cables, placed above the original set, and the main towers were increased in height. The railway had been part of the initial design, but was eliminated for economy, so the initial structure was lightened. The original builder American Bridge Company was called again for the job, performing the first aerial spinning of additional main cables on a loaded, fully operational suspension bridge.

Traffic soon increased well beyond predictions, and has remained at maximum capacity despite the enlargement from four to six lanes, the addition of the railway, and the building of a second bridge serving Lisbon, the Vasco da Gama Bridge. A third bridge has been on and off government plans for some time, but the idea has been dropped presently, due to Portugal's budget constraints.

Glen Canyon is a natural canyon carved by a 169.6-mile length of the Colorado River, mostly in southeastern and south-central Utah, in the United States. Glen Canyon starts where Narrow Canyon ends, at the confluence of the Colorado River and the Dirty Devil River. A small part of the lower end of Glen Canyon extends into northern Arizona and terminates at Lee's Ferry, near the Vermilion Cliffs. Like the Grand Canyon further downstream, Glen Canyon is part of the immense system of canyons carved by the Colorado River and its tributaries.

In 1963, a reservoir, Lake Powell, was created by the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam, in the Arizona portion of Glen Canyon near Page, inundating much of Glen Canyon under water hundreds of feet in depth. Contrary to popular belief, Lake Powell was not the result of negotiations over the controversial damming of the Green River within Dinosaur National Monument at Echo Park; the Echo Park Dam proposal was abandoned due to nationwide citizen pressure on Congress to do so.  The Glen Canyon Dam remains a central issue for modern environmentalist movements. Beginning in the late 1990s, the Sierra Club and other organizations renewed the call to dismantle the dam and drain Lake Powell in Lower Glen Canyon. Today, Glen Canyon and Lake Powell are managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

The jacket is by Internacionale and I bought it a couple of years ago in their closing-down sale for something crazy like £3. It's the first time I've actually worn it, but it really worked. The arms are exactly the right length for me, and it fits me really well across the shoulders too.

For about 2 weeks following the Summer solstice there is minimal noticeable change in the length of days, but one month or so on, and now it is really starting to accelerate. Currently the days are getting shorter by about 3 minutes per day! It'll soon be C.........s!! (No, why the groan? I meant the wheat will soon be Cereals, or Cakes, or Cookies!) LOL! :-D

 

Some time around the longest day the sun was rising just to the left of the tree [when viewed from this same position of course!! :-) ] so it has already moved quite a few degrees.

The Model 770 Amphicar (seen on the left side of the photograph above) was named after its ability to achieve speeds of seven knots in the water and 70 mph on land. 3,878 Amphicars were manufactured in Germany from 1961 to 1968. During that time 3,046 were imported into the United States. The Amphicar is rear-engined and uses a 4-cylinder British-built Triumph Herald motor producing 43 hp. All Amphicars are convertibles, offered to civillians in four colors; Beach White, Regatta Red, Lagoon Blue, and Fjord Green (Aqua). Two American Presidents owned Amphicars; Jimmy Carter and Lyndon B. Johnson. President Johnson would invite friends and even foreign dignitaries to his Texas ranch for a joyride in his car.
