This was second visit to a Romany horse fair. It was busier than the Hertfordshire fair in April. There were many more horses and foals being traded plus an assortment of trade stands. I am always fascinated by the goods for the travelling way of life and cooking with campfires. Notably, this fair had several fabulous ornate horsedrawn vardo caravans and carts. Horses and riders were to be seen everywhere riding bareback, pulling chariots, being exercised, being taken for a drink, or swimming in the river. The later mesmerised me for half the day.
Photographing the horses in water was a novelty for me. I went for a high shutter speed to capture the water spray. I experimented with the aperture (f stop) to vary how much background is in focus. I also shot in short bursts of two or three photos to pick out the one that best capture the action. The final idea was to add a polarizing filter to the lens to reduce the glare off the water.
Photographically, I also treated myself to six rolls of film photography and photography with the kaleidoscope pyramid filter on the lens.
Overall, I found it a very welcoming day with many coming up to talk about my photography and have a photo taken. There has been a lot of interaction with the photographs over social media with many of the community asking me to send their photos. I learned later that theirs is a way of life that maybe fading away with time. Too often photographers take pictures and vanish, so they are delighted when I make the effort to give back and share via the Roman Heritage community page on Facebook.
The site is remarkably close to where my mother’s grandfather and uncle’s farmed. I am a Leicestershire born and raised lad.
It is also the area where a Leicestershire legend of Bel the giant is based. Five villages lie in a line between Loughborough and Leicester. Bel the giant mounted his mighty horse where the village Mountsorrel now stands then rode by (Rothley village), took one leap to Wanlip village, and then another bigger leap where he landed hard and bust all (Birstall village) and then they buried him at Belgrave village.
