An aide-memoire postcard from my camera. Monday December 2nd, 2024. 154th Winslow Annual Christmas Prime Stock Show. A traditional Xmas livestock market and third of three I visited that weekend. There were competitive classes for cattle, sheep, and in a side hall homecrafts and photography. This Xmas livestock show was different. It was a takeover of a historic town market square with heavy steel pens and barriers erected to contain the stock. I also took my family for the day out. There were side extras like a vintage butcher’s van and a Victorian gent. The show was popular with the rural community with people pressed 3-5 deep at times trying to see the action. The Supreme Champion sold for £5,600 to the nearby Winslow Bell hotel.

Photographically, it was even more about snatching candid shots in amongst the crowds and steel pens. I met other photographers there including one shooting 35mm film Nikons. I managed to bring out the Minolta 404xi 35mm film camera to finish shooting the developmental British Harman Pheonix colour negative film. I did manage to drop a camera and crack its sacrificial skylight lens. It has unscrewed itself from the harness. Otherwise, the event presented similar challenges to the previous day in Thame, and again the candid monochrome action portraits worked well. Auctioneers and livestock handlers are very dynamic and staff very friendly. For now, time to reflect on compositional and artistic options. #rurallifephotography #learningbydoing #localfood #cattle #sheep #pigs #livestockmarkets #35mmfilm #HarmanPheonix

Friday November 29th, 2024. Thame and the Vale of Aylesbury Primestock Show. A traditional Xmas livestock market and one of three I visited that weekend. There were competitive classes for Cattle and Sheep. The auctioneers started with the sheep before continuing to the cattle. They auctioned the show stock first followed by the commercial stock. Photographically, it was a first for me. I really enjoyed the day. The pens made for interesting parallax and geometry challenges as well as obstructed views. I seriously wanted for my fastest prime lens in the dimmish indoor cattle ring. Candid monochrome action portraits worked well. Auctioneers are very dynamic and staff very friendly. Going forward, knowing the Xmas market and activities will enable me to get to slightly more helpful shooting positions. Good ‘meaty’ compositions for prime cattle are off the front right quarter and for prime lambs it is three of more in a row held with their backs to camera. For now, time to reflect on compositional and artistic options. #rurallifephotography #learningbydoing #localfood #cattle #sheep #livestockmarkets
