A student handles artifacts from World War II and learns that gas masks, packs, and guns were not movie props during the war.

Head still in the works. Face without eyes.

A student learns about World War II while talking on an authentic field phone to a friend.

A Filipina student tries on a helmet from WW-2

She was talking about how the helmet was too big and did not fit as she held it to keep it from falling off her head when I snapped this shot.

We learn by doing things.

My World War II Teaching Team. These are high school students who have volunteered to help me display my collection of artifacts. I have an early war 31st Regiment Soldier, Rosie the riveter, Australian coast watcher, WAC Lieutenant, Nurse, Movie Star, Wendy the Welder, Japanese Soldier, 38th Infantry BAR gunner, Filipina Guerrilla, 503rd PIR Combat Medic, 24th Infantry Soldier.

Some of these kids even gave up part of their Spring Break to help develop this program.

This is one of my students who is playing the role of a Filipina Guerrilla fighter and spy. She has a 1917 Enfield that she picked up in the jungle but prefers the bolo knife.

Kids will be kids! Even the best of the best get a little silly some times.

One of my student teaching team members plays the part of an infantryman with the 24th Division on Leyte in October of 1944.

Students learn about World War II by feeling and experiencing artifacts.

This high school student was part of my teaching team. She plays the role of a W.A.C. 2nd Lieutenant who instructs recruits in basic weapon functions. Her display shows the services of women in various branches of the military.

She tries on a WAC cover with authentic 2nd Lieutenant bar insignia.

One of my teaching team members explains the importance of the K-Ration to students from another school.

A high school student learned about and presents information on Hollywood stars and the USO during World War II.

Students learn about World War II through a "hands-on" approach. Feeling the weight of helmets and gear gives a new appreciation for history and for the people who made it.

You drive a long way to shoot in the dark & cold place until three at the morning, but when you come home and see the final photo then you know it was all worth.

My teaching team: Soldiers and civilian workers combined forces to win the war. This exhibit was demonstrated at the high school alma mater of a Bataan Death March survivor, Tillman Rutledge, who recently passed. Tillman's surviving brother and sister were present as these students remembered his sacrifice and honored his memory by teaching students at this school about World War II.

A high school student tries out the Browning Light Machine gun.

Students are awarded bandanas for answering questions correctly and become new "Rosies" for the war effort.

"Wendy the Welder" takes a much-needed break during the day. Kandace represents thousands of women who were a part of the workforce during the war.

This is my first time in front of the camera since I left the media world in 2019. And, surprisingly, the first professional photo of me since I left photography in 2013.

Seems like it turned out great! 😄 Especially considering I had to shoot it completely blind—I couldn’t tether my Canon 5D to my M1 Mac. So, it was just me, a tripod, and a bit of hope that I wasn’t making ridiculous faces at the camera.

Feels strange being on this side of the lens again, but here we are.

A high school student learns that a bayonet on the end of a rifle was not just for show. This hands on study goes beyond the book and helps the student appreciate the history better.

This young man has a full load of combat gear. It needs to be adjusted a little to fit him properly, but he gets the idea.

Two high school students play roles to teach their peers about World War II. On the left is "Rosie the Riveter" and on the right is "Wendy the Welder"

My female teaching crew: "Wendy the Welder," WAC Lieutenant, Actress, Nurse, "Rosie the Riveter." These girls developed displays and characterizations to teach students at another high school about World War II. They had to study quite a bit to qualify for this job.

The Browning 1919A4 .30 caliber machine gun is always a favorite for posing. How many times does a kid get a chance to touch one?

All the safety in the world can't accomodate for developing a human sense of danger. There were some quite steep passages on this boulder, but easily managed if you apply the right attitude. It's amazing how quickly kids learn how to do this.

And let me shout this, mothers of the world: They learn it by DOING IT, not by NOT DOING IT!
