Saturday November 30th, 2024. 114th Christmas Fat Stock Show of the Thrapston and District Fat Stock Show Society, incorporating the Northampton Christmas Prime Stock Club. A traditional Xmas livestock market and second of three I visited that weekend. There were competitive classes for cattle calves, pigs, farm produce, sheep, and young farmers stock judging. A bottle of whiskey was up for grabs in a contest to guess the weight of a Hereford cow. They auctioned the show stock first followed by the commercial stock. I really appreciated the market café for breakfast and a coffee between the judging and the auctions. Photographically, I had more time to pace myself today and managed to bring out the Minolta 404xi 35mm film camera to shoot the developmental British Harman Pheonix colour negative film. The results really struggled with the contrast from livestock to sky and the colours feel a bit nuclear fall-out and a bit yellowy with age. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Otherwise, the event presented similar challenges to the previous day in Thame, and again the candid monochrome action portraits worked well. Auctioneers and livestock handlers are very dynamic and staff very friendly. For now, time to reflect on compositional and artistic options. I did not really get to see calf show and pigs, but next time I will be a bit more familiar and wiser. #rurallifephotography #learningbydoing #localfood #cattle #sheep #pigs #livestockmarkets #35mmfilm #HarmanPheonix
