Finally this is my first stranger in 100 strangers project since I follow the group for quiet sometimes now.

Meet Elma, 6 years old from Dieng plateau, Indonesia.

I met her when she was playing with her friends. I opened the conversation about her unique gift and she was shy at the first before I told her that I want her pictures. After that, she was slowly becoming more and more exited and story-telling me her story. In the end she told me that she loves being in front of the camera.

A year ago she experienced a high fever and a few strands of her hair fused into dreadlocks just the next day.

The people in her community believe the phenomenon of dreadlocks or "gembel" (as what they called it) is a heritage from their ancestor, named Ki Kolodete.

It is said that children who had cut their hair must be given the right to ask whatever they want accompanied by a big ceremony/party or the dreadlocks will re-grow.

As for Elma she hasn’t cut her dreadlocks because her parents are financially not ready to throw a big ceremony and giving Elma what she wants.

About 100 Strangers

The idea: The 100 Strangers project is a learning group intended for those wishing to improve both their social and technical skills needed for taking portraits of strangers and telling their stories. The method is to learn by doing. Your participation will require you to share your experiences with the other members of the group. By providing this invaluable knowledge, everyone, beginners and experienced alike will benefit.

The challenge: Take 100 photographs of at least 100 people you don't know. Approach anyone or a group of people, ask for permission to both take a photo of them and to post it to this group. Get to know your stranger/s. Who are they? What is their life like?

Step out of your comfort zone and into a new level of portrait photography. Start by taking 100 portraits of people you don't know, total strangers. We welcome both beginner and advanced photographers. You may be new to photographing strangers or already have experience with this type of photography. Regardless, everyone is encouraged to take up the challenge.

The project is quite enjoyable and will definitely improve your photojournalistic skills. During the process you might just gain a new appreciation for those around you and enrich your everyday experience . You may even gain a few new friends along the way.

As you progress with the project it will be critical to share your experiences with the other members. This may be a story about the stranger you just met or how you felt making the approach. You may have, for example, tried a new approach, used a new photographic technique or equipment. You are learning by doing, so share with us what you’ve learned while taking on the 100 Stranger project.

Lab visitors took part in a compact building experiment to collectively conceive of, prepare plans for, and build a temporary outdoor structure over a period of only four days. From the initial design sketch to the development of models and detailed drawings, all the way to hands-on construction, we confronted challenging design questions by building them rather than just talking about them. This workshop was led by Fattinger Orso Architektur, a Vienna-based Design and Fabrication Studio working at the intersection of architecture, art, and design, led by Veronika Orso and Peter Fattinger.

- Tricks of Influence - 7 Biases and Psychological Artistry -

September 2012

Hi

A key question for you is what do you think moves people to change behaviour? What are the 7 key biases that we all have which lie behind making decisions and choices?

Being able to answer these questions means understanding influence and decision making processes. Influence is the driving force for us making the most of our resources.

. Introduction

. Choices - The 7 Cognitive Biases

. Standing Out From Countless Distractions

. A Better Show-reel

. Sleight of Mind Set Workshops

. Feedback

. What Is Psychological Artistry?

. Examples of Psychological Artistry

. Contact Me

The ability to influence, appear to be able to dictate and predetermine people's choices and actions lie behind much that we cover in our SMS workshops. We're now very excited to be able to offer to you a number of open workshops dedicated to showing you mind magic and psychological artistry and how to apply it to what you do. We call this these the Sleight of Mind Set Workshops (click here for more information) or visit mindsways.com/SMS/

The ideas and material in this workshop is designed to reinforce and expand upon your delivery and interventions. Following on from the recent successes we are now holding the SMS workshops in Birmingham, Bath, Glasgow and London during November.

CHOICES - THE 7 COGNITIVE BIASES

Our choices are driven by our cognitive biases, 7 of the most important ones that we make use of in Psychological Artistry are:

Availability bias

Conformational bias

Illusion of control

Clustering or patterning fallacies

The Forer effect

Anchoring

Framing effect

There are many more, but understanding just these 7 gives us massive insights on our own decision making processes and also makes a large impact on how we influence other people's decisions and choices. In addition to these other biases come into play that have an impact on our lives and business. Some of these are:

Distinction bias

Egocentric bias

Information bias

Belief bias

We use to psychological artistry to both illustrate and understand these processes in a non threatening yet challenging way.

Mind Magic uses these and other techniques to give you the appearance of being able to accurately direct, dictate and influence people's choices. Being able to apply these techniques and ideas, as well as carry out these effects, increases your understanding of the psychological forces and shows others that you work with them.

These forces have real and practical impact on our lives daily. The SMS day uses mind magic as a lens to focus and clearly illustrate these psychological biases, whilst at the same time equipping you with an approach that is entertaining and engaging. This can prove a powerful way to engage a variety of people.

STANDING OUT FROM THE COUNTLESS DISTRACTIONS

With countless distractions coming at us from all angles, we must be able to stand out from the crowd, grab attention and more importantly, be able to hold attention. The skills and techniques that are embedded within Psychological Artistry are designed to do just that. I have coached and trained with this approach and found that through this, many areas can be dealt with, such as:

Developing confidence

Communication skills

Understanding behaviours

Biases ( social and cognitive)

How we experience the world

Self expression

Thinking skills

A BETTER SHOW-REEL

"To win more pitches, you need a better show-reel." John Hegarty - Hegarty on Advertising

We are looking to add to your "show-reel" by teaching you these techniques, routines and effects. A warning though, they must be treated like the special effects we see in films. They are there to enhance and illustrate what you do. A movie that is all special effects and no story makes for a boring film. Sometimes the best special effects are invisible. You will learn to use the Psychological Artistry toolbox of special effects to enhance and illustrate what you deliver.

SLEIGHT OF MIND SET WORKSHOPS

On these days, you will follow us down a path that will capture your imagination, giving you a complete skill set of astonishment, amazement and wonder. You will experience the worlds of Psychological Artistry, Neuroscience, Smart Thinking, Stagecraft and Magic, as well as partake in an experience that defies and twists logic and scientific understanding.

The day will challenge you to think about your delivery in entirely different ways. You will uncover your ability to step out of the logical box and view what you do from an entirely new perspective.

These workshops are all about enabling you to learn, appreciate and apply mind magic and psychological artistry to what you do. The approach is not traditional, but that is where its strength lies, particularly when advertising and adding value to others.

The programme includes two packs of material, the SNT (Show Not Tell) kit and the SMS (Sleight of Mind Set) pack; these include 20 discrete routines, ideas and techniques that allow you to deliver what you learn. The material here is not readily available but is assembled in packs ready for you to take away and use.

We are engaged with a wide range of people and organisations, but all of them have one thing in common; they are all people who work with people. They all want to increase their performance; they are all searching for methods to improve what they do, they are all seeking something different. It is our objective to meet this outcome and we are doing it through using Psychological Artistry. For more information about the workshops please click here or visit www.mindsways.com/SMS/.

FEEDBACK

We have both been very pleased with previous feedback, with people saying it was "mind blowing" and "totally new". We are now seeing that we are meeting your expectations and adding value, which is very important to us. To see what people have said see www.mindsways.com/about/what-people-say/

WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGICAL ARTISTRY?

Psychological Artistry has at its heart Mind magic a tradition that has intrigued, entertained and drawn people in for over a century. We wrap around and mix in the science of social psychology, NLP, neuroscience and smart thinking. We take the building blocks of magic and psychology, and transform them so that you can use them to show people what you do, as well as what makes you different and worthy of their time. This leads us down a path where our focus is on learning by doing and through showing not telling. This produces an approach that is different enough to draw people to your projects or ideas.

We do this by weaving together overlapping areas of delivery such as:

Psychology

Influence

NLP

Presentation Skills

Human Behaviour

Stagecraft

Performance

Confidence

Story Telling

Engagement

Magic ideas and techniques

Today in this society which is rapidly changing and evolving our visibility is vital. You must be able be visible. You must be able to deliver new ideas and present established ideas in new ways. One of the easiest ways to do this is to appeal to novelty.

The skills and experiences you can gain from Psychological Artistry allow you to absorb these new ideas into your world, full of your own experiences and thoughts. Use these for encouraging and illustrating self awareness and the power the environment and our circumstances has in how we think and behave.

This acts as a vehicle for you to stand out and make an impact with your ideas.

AN EXAMPLE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL ARTISTRY

A couple of interesting examples of how all is not as it appears are the McGurk effect and Prof Richard Wiseman's "The Incredible Colour Changing Card Effect". Please take a look here or visit mindsways.com/community. I would love to know what you think. These illustrate both the power and the approach of psychological artistry.

All those who actually grew up before going to college look at us funny. I was only a spectator this year, but sort of dying to show them how it's done :P

Henry Ford established this one-room schoolhouse for children of workers at his nearby Nankin Mill village industry plant producing automotive parts. The rural school operated from 1937 to 1946 as part of Ford's Edison Institute School System, encouraging "learning by doing". Beyond the basics like reading, writing, and math, subjects included vocational skills, health classes and etiquette. Students maintained garden plots, and they enjoyed swimming (they wouldn't do that now..LOL) and skating on the nearby Nankin mill pond. In addition to building the school, Henry Ford paid teachers salaries, school taxes and student medical and dental expenses.

It was that kind of morning.

Cold.

It's supposed to get into the single digits sometime in the next day or two. For you dears up in more northernly climes, I realize it's positively tropical down here. But I'm a Virginia gal now!!

And I think it's possible we're getting worse at the woodstove instead of better -- it's taking longer for the fire to catch, and we haven't yet figured out the right approach to opening/closing/opening the dampers. And how do we figure out what kind/direction of draft our stove has? We're mainly learning by doing and consulting books too. It makes me happy, really, but my nose is red and drippy. In case you were wondering.

Weekend Training about Self-directed learning in a (too) complex world.

Learning is a lifelong challenge. This challenge has been getting more and more complicated recently. Somebody would say, a more complex world is responsible for that, and we would agree. Competencies are a new trend and the professional market speaks about them around-the-clock. Somebody would say, it’s unknown which competencies will be really up-to-date in 10 years and we would agree, but only partially.

How can we actually gain and strengthen competencies we need as individuals, citizens, people, employees, freelancers or founders? Which concrete instruments can we use instead of being confronted with a too general “learning by doing” attitude? Which competency model is making sense for you and how can you organize an effective and enjoyable learning journey in which you are your own guide?

Find more information and trainings at horizontal.school.

The One Hundred Strangers project is a learning group for people who want to improve the social and technical skills needed for taking portraits of strangers and telling their stories. The method is learning by doing.

Having the good fortune to work close to Camden Market, I decided to take a walk round this evening on my way home. The light was not great but I'm on the early shift and didn't want to hang about.

As I was heading back to the tube station I saw Comfey walking with a friend. I'd seen her earlier and had thought she was striking and would be a good subject, but she'd been talking on her phone and I didn't want to disturb her. This time I didn't hesitate.

I explained the project and and she agreed to pose for me. It was very busy so it was difficult to find a good spot but one has to work with what one has and besides, with a striking beauty like this, who needs a background.

Comfey lives in SE London and came out Camden to visit a friend (I hope I've got the name right, it was quite loud next to the road and I'd already asked twice so didn't to push it - I'm bad with names as I'm sure is becoming apparent).

Thanks for being a wonderful 2nd stranger and I hope you had a great time in Camden.

We are about uncovering the patterns of human behaviour whilst being

Still on my photowalk round Reigate yesterday, I was heading towards the skate park to get some action shots when I saw Mia walking along with her little 2 year old, Thomas. I explained the project and she agreed. She also said that she didn't think that she was good in front of a camera but I think she did great.

Having two youngsters myself, we were both keeping half an eye on young Thomas who toddled around unconcerned while this strange man shot pictures of his mommy. He gave me a lovely 'goodbye' when we were done. Lovely boy!

Thanks Mia for a great picture.

Today I had my first computer class at Masongola. As mentioned earlier I don’t teach computers regularly here but managed to get a double hour of computers from my supervising teacher this week.

The school don't have many computers for the students, only six functioning, and four broken ones. That's why only a small selection of the students are offered the computer class. Only about 20 students from Form 3 and Form 4, with good grades in natural sciences are offered the course.

At Mulunguzi school they do it differently. There they have about the same amount of computers, but they offer the course to more students and from Form 1 and up. The students choose if they want to take the computer course, and all the students that choose to do so are put in the same class. Marthe, that teach computers at Mulunguzi have 40 students at the time and she says she manages by dividing the class in two, giving notes on the board for one half of the class, and having the other half use the computers, then switching.

Anyway, my class was only 16 students today, so my students could even sit two and two at some of the computers. They have taken the course for half a year already, but have only done the theory so fare. There is a book which they are using with lots of technical theory about CPU, different kinds of equipment, input devices, output devices and so one. I suspect that that's what gone be on their exam in this subject. They have had lectures in this for half a year, and today were gone be the first day that they actually turned on the computers! I can tell you that I was just as exited as the students were.

I were gone teach them how to turn on a computer, some basic mouse movement, how to start word, how to write their name and address of the school, how to save a document, and how to turn of the computer.

I did ask how many that had used a computer before, and only one admitted to have tried using a computer a tiny bit before. For the rest it was their absolute first time! I believe in learning by doing, so I just let them loose with minimum amount of instructions. I had to do a few things, like the shift and the enter button, file, save and open, start menu and word icon, cross to exit programs and so one, on the blackboard, but the students figured most of these things out by themselves before I had time to explain. By the end of the class we had already started on games, and since it was the last class of the day I told them that I could stay behind and do some work in the computer room, so that they could continue their exploring of the computers.

They where pretty much self-driven and incredible fast in catching on. They shared all new cool discoveries with each other, and soon people were playing videos (no sound though), painting Afrika in paint, playing card games and making fancy writing and clip art in word. They were also very persistent in trying to make the other computers work. On guy was tinkering inside the blue screen of on of the broken computers and I had to stop him from changing the CPU settings I think it was. We continued until one hour before sunset, when I had to leave to make it home in time before dark. They told me that it had been a fun class, finally tinkering with the computers.

I met Jess at the Dupont Circle Farmer’s Market. All the other vendors were selling fresh fruits and vegetables, but the Compost Cab was the only one who was literally at the other end of the food cycle.

“How in the world did you get into composting?” I had to ask.

“A friend of mine told me there was a job available, so I came to apply.”

“So you are not really into it?”

“I am now. It grew on me,” she said with a laugh.

Compost Cap story is fairly interesting. According to their brochure “for every four families who work with Compost Cab, we keep a ton of organics out of landfills each year. Instead, we partner with urban farms to compost it locally, creating fertile new soil, and growing food for the community through a unique soil-exchange program.”

Compost Cab provides their customers with a bin to capture their compost, and they can drop it off at their farmer’s market tent, where Jess helps them.

What’s next? “I want to go work with some of the farms and learn more about how that part,” she said.

Thanks for making our world a cleaner place, Jess.

About 100 Strangers: The 100 Strangers project is a learning group for people who want to improve the social and technical skills needed for taking portraits of strangers and telling their stories. The method is learning by doing.

The challenge: Take 100 photographs of at least 100 people you don't know. Approach a person or group of people and ask for permission to both take a photo of them and to post it to this www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers. Get to know your subjects. Take their pictures. Tell their stories.

This is my first try in making portraits.

There are a lot of mistakes in this serie, mostly with the background... Learning by doing ;)..

at COEP. I'm a big proponent of this learning by doing, but it's kind of counter to the indian way. After I yelled and pressed emergency stop, they realised I really wasn't checking their values for them and they'd have to do it themselves.
