The Gulden Leeuw is one of the world's largest three-mast-topsail schooners, built under architecture, she has perfect sailing abilities. The ship has very high safety standard because of strict Dutch additional safety requirements on top of SOLAS requirements. Our professional crew consists of very well trained and experienced sailors which hold all required certificates. The (deck) layout of the Gulden Leeuw guarantees a safe learning environment. The Gulden Leeuw was built with the function of sail training in mind. We are passionate about sail training and are eager to "show you the ropes." As soon as you step on board we consider you as "one of the crew." On board our ship, we appreciate team spirit and an open atmosphere. Sailing is great! We also understand that you are there to meet others, see the world and have fun. We get that. You are very welcome to join us and become part of the team.

The ultimate goal is for the trainees to take over the ship. Therefore, everything is done by the trainees – from watch keeping to cleaning the deck. We believe it should be your vessel and your challenge. Our program makes it possible to find out what you like and where your qualities and personal challenges lie. Throughout the course of the journey, the trainees are provided with a sense of seafaring tradition and values, which are indispensable for life on board and within a close community. The group on board is an independent community, almost like a small town in terms of the challenges that it faces, which cannot be ignored and must be overcome. In doing so, personal commitment is promoted and reinforced. Due to the small size of the team in comparison to those on board large freight vessels, the trainees are able to assist in every area on board – from the ship’s management, right through to route planning. Learning by doing is what we do. Depending on the duration of a trip, it is also possible to go into further detail in some areas. Here, a primary focus is on training and encouraging the aspects of community and team-spirit.

The “Gulden Leeuw” is a big, sturdy sailing ship reminiscent of the 30’s and with the deck layout of a classic yacht.

This ship was built in 1937 on behalf of the Danish Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The DANA was designed and built as an ocean-going ice class ship. During her period of service for the Danish government, she was frequently used for marine biological research, not only in Danish waters but also in international ones. The ship has a rich history. She sailed as a researcher, supplier and even as a training ship for a Danish nautical college.

In the past two years the ship has been converted into a three-masted topsail schooner, so the foremast is also yard-rigged. This very versatile rigging combines the advantages of a square-sailed ship and a fore-and-aft rigged ship.

The “Gulden Leeuw” offers space for up to 200 passengers on day sails and for 56 trainees on longer voyages. We are passionate about sail training and are eager to “show you the ropes”. On board our ship we appreciate team spirit.

The ship has a luxurious flair and is therefore also very suitable for corporate hospitality, seminars and day trips.

The first exercise allowed participants to watch back short films they made so they can learn from their mistakes. This learning-by-doing technique helped with the groups confidence.

I was blessed to be able to collect several more captures for my 100 strangers project after a long hiatus. Here is my latest group of strangers.

I was afforded the luxury of accompanying my co-worker CoCo to Las Vegas in August. She was going to renew her wedding vows to her husband of 10 years.

This is where I was able to meet and spend time with her family, including her oldest daughter Merissa. The relationship that CoCo has with her family is enviable. They are all very close. Her family resembles a contemporary Brady Bunch. He has some sons, she has some daughters, together they have a son.

Merissa is just as warm and loving as her mother. Her nurturing manner and kind heart brings people to her like a magnet. The night before in the Hard Rock Casino, she had given her boy friend "the glance" when someone asked her if nuputals were in her future. Like many women, Merissa was waiting for that elussive engagment ring.

Two days later at the top of the Stratosphere, Merissa was proposed to. Little did she know that her boy friend (as well as her sister Cara's boy friend) had planned a double proposal for this occasion. Needless to say, Merissa was overjoyed.

The next day, the daughters joined me in my room to help the bride get ready. The room was a flutter of activity. Make-up brushes and containers of flesh colored powder were strewn on the bed. Elvis was playing in the background from a laptop, and fruit and cresants were sitting in a make shift buffet on the desk. CoCo had just finished getting her hair and make-up done in my suite and was taking one last look in the mirror before getting into her wedding gown.

Beaming, Merissa joined her and the two exchanged loving glances. At that moment, I was caught off gaurd by the hallmark moment: when child and parent switch roles momentarily as Merissa soothed a nervous CoCo.

Merissa is the third of my 100 strangers.

The One Hundred Strangers project is a learning group for people who want to improve the social and technical skills needed for taking portraits of strangers and telling their stories. The method is learning by doing. The challenge is to take 100 photographs of at least 100 people you don't know.

This is my first try in making portraits.

There are a lot of mistakes in this serie, mostly with the background... Learning by doing ;)..

Found the branch in the garden, a gift from the Magnolia tree. Fits well to the blossoms.

There is one rule: Dark colors to the bottom, light colors up high. Learning by doing.

A child, in Third Grade, takes part in remote learning at home. Most days, this included several hours of screen time, as he, at 9 years old, navigated Zoom sessions, digital lesson videos and slideshows, eBook reading, and virtual worksheet completion. Often, this work included computer techniques that he did not previously know how to use. These included things like creating text boxes, copy & paste, using dual windows, email, video conferences, and many others. Some days were harder than others, and required more help from his mother than others. This was frequently especially difficult, as his 7 year-old brother in First Grade was also remote learning. To make things more fun, and to give he and his brother a break, his mom tried to give them a "recess" break to take a hike through the woods, run around the yard, or take part in hands-on learning by doing things like following recipes (while talking about math) and building volcanoes (while discussing chemical reactions).

10x12cm wet-plate tintype on anodised aluminium, shot with a 4x5" field camera. Exposure ~4 sec. @ f/6. It's dark because I underestimated the emulsion's low sensitivity to the dark green of the shrubbery; I had hoped for better highlight separation. Such is life: learning by doing.

The One Hundred Strangers project is a learning group for people who want to improve the social and technical skills needed for taking portraits of strangers and telling their stories. The method is learning by doing.

My 4th stranger in the series, Sandra, was walking along the bridge over Camden Lock carrying an advertising board for a tarrot card reader. She didn't seem phased by my request to take her picture, maybe she knew I was coming.

It was very loud on the bridge so I didn't really get a chance to chat much but thank you Sandra for a lovely picture.

Henry Ford established this one-room schoolhouse for children of workers at his nearby Nankin Mill village industry plant producing automotive parts. The rural school operated from 1937 to 1946 as part of Ford's Edison Institute School System, encouraging "learning by doing". Beyond the basics like reading, writing, and math, subjects included vocational skills, health classes and etiquette. Students maintained garden plots, and they enjoyed swimming (they wouldn't do that now..LOL) and skating on the nearby Nankin mill pond. In addition to building the school, Henry Ford paid teachers salaries, school taxes and student medical and dental expenses.

Weekend Training about Self-directed learning in a (too) complex world.

Learning is a lifelong challenge. This challenge has been getting more and more complicated recently. Somebody would say, a more complex world is responsible for that, and we would agree. Competencies are a new trend and the professional market speaks about them around-the-clock. Somebody would say, it’s unknown which competencies will be really up-to-date in 10 years and we would agree, but only partially.

How can we actually gain and strengthen competencies we need as individuals, citizens, people, employees, freelancers or founders? Which concrete instruments can we use instead of being confronted with a too general “learning by doing” attitude? Which competency model is making sense for you and how can you organize an effective and enjoyable learning journey in which you are your own guide?

Reworking a shot from October. Working on the adage of learning by doing, this is an experiment with playing with Lightroom.

This "Jim", my local hill farmer who has let me document his work on a borders hill farm over the last couple of years. When I called, takign abreak from, preparing a Ram for market.

Jim's farm is up in the hills above my village. In winter it can be a bleak place, so I thought I'd experiement in toning down/muting the colours to reflect the environment where the farm is located. Having said this, Jim is always cheerful whatever the weather.

Shot in RAW format, then tweaked in Lightroom to create the popular desaturated "Grunge Look" popular in some photographic circles. No other reworking has been done.

Rien qu'à l'extérieur, on a déjà créé 170 places assises.

Autumn is the time for suede and leather, comfy sweaters and warm coats. The scarf makes the outfit, and it is a gift from a very good friend. I can't wait to wear this to the Laptop Lounge. BTW, no professional makeup artist, it's just me learning by doing.

Rien qu'à l'extérieur, on a déjà créé 170 places assises.

Paperfolding at the Bauhaus as a tool to understand form with the help of material. Working with hands-on. Learning by doing. The teaching of Josef Albers on the design principles and his paper construction exercises became legendary.

“The student had to solve it entirely independently. No technical explanations were given.”

" I remember vividly the first day of the [Preliminary Course]. Josef Albers entered the room, carrying with him a bunch of newspapers. … [and] then addressed us … “Ladies and gentlemen, we are poor, not rich. We can’t afford to waste materials or time. … All art starts with a material, and therefore we have first to investigate what our material can do. So, at the beginning we will experiment without aiming at making a product. At the moment we prefer cleverness to beauty. … Our studies should lead to constructive thinking. … I want you now to take the newspapers … and try to make something out of them that is more than you have now. I want you to respect the material and use it in a way that makes sense — preserve its inherent characteristics. If you can do without tools like knives and scissors, and without glue, [all] the better.”

The number of masts and how they are arranged, plus the use of fore-and-aft sails or square sails—or combinations of both—determine how a ship is identified.

Rien qu'à l'extérieur, on a déjà créé 170 places assises.
