Lean On Me - I was just lamenting my screech owl luck this year, and my lamentations were recently answered! I hiked about 2 miles, scanning every suitable cavity I saw in Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) and Valley Oak (Quercus lobata), two of the preferred tree species for these owls in Northern California.
Finally, I returned where I started and saw a partially obscured cavity and noticed a single screech owl in the cavity. She shuffled around and then out popped the second one, which was clearly smaller and a male. Shooting was a challenge as I had to shoot off a soft slope, which made long exposures tricky. I was fortunate to grab a few sharp frames regardless - and I just loved the way they were leaning on each other and listening to hikers, songbirds and road noise.
Amazingly, the female landed a few feet away from me in a bush and just watched me and preened. I fumbled around as it was much too dark at this point for images, so I just enjoyed the moment until she took off on her evening hunt.
Looking forward to spend more time with these beauties this summer

This frog was so busy arranging the pretty string of black beads [ toad spawn ] it had found, it didn't seem to notice that someone was using its back as a convenient leaning post. It's just great to see the frogs and toads getting on so well.
If you describe someone as lean, you mean that they are thin but look strong and healthy.
But today I discovered this:
Lean, also known as purple drank, purp, sizzurp, or oil, and several other names, is a recreational drug beverage, prepared by mixing prescription strength cough or cold syrup containing codeine and promethazine with a soft drink; that makes the user feel extremely drowsy and often euphoric.

And—sneaking in a reference to John Denver—sunlight on the shoulder of the mountain makes me happy. 😃

These trees are on the edge of the campsite we stayed on last week; I liked the way they seemed to fit together.
