Unfortunately, the shelf is juuuuust wide enough that when I hacked some of the tiles to stack next to the full tiles, the resultant piece was too small. I filled in where necessary with strips of my favorite tile, in a way that I hope seems slightly balanced.
A note about the tiles: I bought a Flor tile sample pack in red and then augmented with some coordinating colors. I got the teal for punch, which I really dig. I also got to of the Coir tiles, because I knew the cats would love tearing them up (they're made of coconuts, I guess?). THEY DO. But because laying on that didn't seem nice, I spread them out. I positioned the Coir tiles such that a cat could stretch way out and claw at them, but have enough room to lay down in between them. If I were to do this project again, I would use a lot of the Poodle tiles (the pink tile is Poodle, as is the red full tile to the right of it, and the little orange nubbin in the corner). I liked how it felt and it has fewer fibers that come up, which is a concern for kitty ingestion.

Our layout under our Christmas tree. I built the mountain and ice rink. I let the kids do all of the detailing.
Here's the standard two-column ACM style for papers. This is going to be part of WWW2006 in the workshop on Mobile things. How..boring. I mean, it feels like I'm looking at a 1950s typeset that just hasn't grok'd the visual semantics of the 21st century. And boy..what a bear to wrangle two columns. I have literally spent the afternoon jamming an already written paper into this style without things slipping off into the style format layout hinterlands. Paragraphs disappear into reference format, footnotes become HEADING SIZE..the whole thing. Yes. I could use LaTeX — I wrote my whole masters thesis in that and maybe this kind of word wrangling mishegoss will push me back into that land. Anyway, the point I'm making is more about the presentation. I'm happy to submit this, but not because I'm proud of the way it looks, and I would like to be proud of both the content and the presentation.

A layout i did awhile back for Chew on This magazine. This is all hand done and prepared like a silkscreen. Spray paint always looks fresh in design work.
