Make the cake batter according to the box instructions, mixing until smooth. You can mix the batter with a hand-held mixer, a whisk, or even a fork. Just make sure to get rid of all the lumps.
Once the batter is smooth, slowly pour it into the non-stick cake pan. You'll only use a little of the batter in this step, the rest will cover the pie.
Spread the batter evenly across the bottom of the cake pan. It should completely cover the bottom of the pan and be about a half inch thick.
The pines, dogwoods, and maples make for a lovely layering effect.

Layer Marney Tower near Colchester in Essex is the tallest Tudor Gatehouse in the UK, a magnificent building standing 80 feet tall within stunning grounds.
The Tower stands on the shores of the river Blackwater, and construction was initiated by Lord Henry Marney in the 1520s, a close friend of Henry VIII. The King visited the Layer Marney Tower during its construction - at the same time Cardinal Wolsey was building his home which would eventually be confiscated by the King.
The Gatehouse building works were continued by his son after his death were supposed to be part of a grand palace, but construction ceased after his son's death. What stands today is a glimpse into the luxurious aspirations of a 16th century lord, now a family-run venue which opens its doors to the public at certain times of the year, and it still does not fail to impress.

Heraldic glass in the church of St Andrew, Norwich. The Layers ( Laiers or Leirs) of Norwich were descended from George Layer of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk and Margaret Butifant ( Butefaunt). George and Margaret's son, William Layer, was sheriff of Norwich in 1526 and mayor in 1537 and his grandson, Christopher Layer was mayor in 1581 and 1589 and sheriff in 1596. Both were actually buried in the church of St John, Maddermarket.
