You’ve made it back to your home base at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino! You’ve had a long and very busy Day One, so go ahead and take your Victory Lap of this vast resort campus — you’ve earned it! 😷😌

Sleep Well and be ready tomorrow morning to continue your leisurely exploration of this Fabulous Las Vegas Strip!

And by the way, ZUMANITY by Cirque du Soleil is not coming back to the NY-NY and has unfortunately become another casualty of the Coronavirus Recession — Bummer... 😒☹️

After the first keynote, I decided to be "smart" and walk through the halls from North to South. I waited until the sea of humanity, I mean crowd, cleared the ballroom. Took about 10 steps into North Hall and realized that the other 1,000 or so people in the keynote were "smart", too. And they were the wall of people in front of me. After becoming slightly claustrophobic (at 5'2" all I could see were shoulders in front of me) and only advancing a few inches, I clawed by way out and took the outside route. Not bad -- got to get some fresh air, got to walk for 45 minutes straight and got to take a photo of an interesting juxtaposition of signs. An LG smartphone sign next to one that reads "Crazy Girls -- Las Vegas' Sexiest Topless Revue."

Mona shot this Polaroid of me.

Some things you didn't know about the iconic Las Vegas sign.

It''s not in Las Vegas!

Located south of Mandalay Bay on Las Vegas Boulevard South, the sign actually sits in unincorporated Clark County. It’s technically about four miles south of the Las Vegas city limits.

The circles that enclose the letters of the word “Welcome” on the sign are designed to look like silver dollars as a tribute to Nevada’s nickname, “The Silver State.”

It's not Trademarked -

The designer of the famous landmark, Betty Willis, never trademarked her work.

Ayumi & Eric came all the way from Australia to get married in the 108 degree weather of Las Vegas! We started out at the Neon Sign Graveyard near downtown Las Vegas. The actual wedding ceremony was held at the Bellagio, my old stomping grounds. In case you didn't know I used to be a wedding photographer at the Bellagio.

Viva Las Vegas! Located at the south end of the famous Strip, the Las Vegas sign continues to draw tourists and locals alike.

I've been meaing to get a photo of this Las Vegas icon forever. I finally captured it on my trip to CES 2009.

I never realized the circles for the "Welcome" are coins! ;)

On the last day with just about an hour remaining before we had to leave for the airport I thought we should probably visit the Welcome to Las Vegas sign for a photo. There were actually a lot of tourists there and it's quite difficult to get a clear shot.

I've used Photoshop CS5 content aware fill in this shot to remove the numerous power cables that obscure the shot. I'll post the original file below showing the before and after. I have to say I'm quite impressed with Photoshop content aware fill.

Las Vegas was a LOT of fun! :)

Look who I spotted walking down the strip.

Las Vegas, NV

The Las Vegas Strip is a stretch of South Las Vegas Boulevard in Clark County, Nevada, renowned for its concentration of resort hotels and casinos. The Strip is approximately 4.2 miles (6.8 km) in length, located immediately south of the Las Vegas city limits in the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester. However, the Strip is often referred to as being in Las Vegas.

Vegas Rocks! Magazine celebrated its 5 year anniversary in front of the Las Vegas sign on August 11, 2009.

The goal was to break the world record of the most guitarists playing along to Elvis Presley's classic "Viva Las Vegas" in front of the Las Vegas sign.

The publishing queen of rock 'n roll, Sally Steele hosted the event and our own cool Mayor, Oscar Goodman even showed up to play some guitar and sing along with the rockin' Elvis impersonator that also there.

SIGN IS 1940'S VINTAGE.

"In 1952, Betty Willis was approached by Ted Rogich, a local salesman, who suggested that she design a sign that would welcome visitors to the city. Las Vegas had a sign heralding everything, he argued, except itself. The sign had to reflect the relatively new, flashy neon age and serve as an impressive gateway for the town.

Willis agreed with Rogich, and embarked on developing a sign that was unique in its shape, style and content. Although the sign, at 25 feet tall, is short compared to other signs on the Strip, it does have some distinctive features. The diamond shape immediately differentiates it from the others. In a nod to Nevada's nickname as "the Silver State," seven silver dollars back the seven letters of the word "Welcome."

In 1959, when the sign was completed, Willis and Rogich sold it for $4,000 to Clark County officials, who placed the sign on an island on the southern tip of the Strip, where it remains to this day.

In hopes that the design would be used freely, Willis never copyrighted her sign's design. Today, clothing, food, and various souvenirs are just some of the many items that bear the likeness of Willis' design.

The "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign has become so iconic of Las Vegas that the sign was chosen as the official logo for Las Vegas' centennial celebration.

Willis continued to design signs until retiring at the age of 77, but her most famous design remains "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas." The sign has now become a destination in its own right and is seen as an iconic symbol of Las Vegas to tourists and Las Vegans alike."
