This year's Summer Sangha was an eight-day journey of learning, laughter and lasting memories, all set in the beautiful surroundings of Sri Vitthal Dham. We explored the inspiring stories of the saints of Maharashtra through theatre plays, creative presentations and traditional abhangs, went on a treasure hunt, worked on an outdoor art project, enjoyed a mocktail night, sang and danced and simply had a fantastic time. Check out some of the highlights below!
The Holy Lake Festival at Sri Vitthal Dham was a four-day celebration of dance, music, delicious food and a variety of workshops such as yoga, cooking, dance, and music.
A major highlight was playing Holi with Paramahamsa Vishwananda, with everyone drenched in colours and taking a dip in the Chandrabhaga Lake.
The festival featured a special performance by Parvathy Baul and a variety of unique and uplifting concerts by Prema Vahini, Shankari Dasi, Aaradhana, Kalyani & Samuel, The Future Saints of Vitthala, Vrinda, Vishwaas and Gadadhar & the Gopis.
Finally, the festival ended on a high note with a club night featuring DJ Amara Nimai Dasananda who chose the best dance music to capture the celebration!

Transform your outdoor space with the power of deck painting. A fresh coat of paint not only enhances your deck’s appearance but also provides essential protection against weather damage, UV rays, and daily wear. With the right paint and maintenance practices, you can extend your deck’s lifespan and keep it looking its best for years to come. Whether you’re tackling the project yourself or hiring professionals, deck painting is an effective way to create a beautiful and long-lasting outdoor retreat.
Beyond aesthetics, a well-painted deck acts as a crucial protective barrier against moisture, mold, and fading—helping to preserve the integrity of the wood and prevent costly repairs. Regular painting seals cracks and prevents deterioration, ensuring your deck remains a welcoming space for relaxation and entertainment. By choosing high-quality materials and proper preparation techniques, you can achieve a flawless finish that complements your home’s style and stands up to the elements.
Why Deck Painting is Essential for Your Home
Deck painting plays a vital role in maintaining your home and enhancing its aesthetics. It involves applying a fresh coat of paint to your deck, a process that protects wood from harsh environmental conditions. This protection is crucial as it helps prevent damage from moisture, sunlight, and temperature extremes.
Benefits of Deck Painting:
• Protection: Shields wood from rain, sun, and temperature changes.
• Appearance: Transforms and revitalizes the look of your outdoor living space.
• Property Value: Increases curb appeal, potentially boosting property value.
• Durability: Professional deck painting ensures that the paint job is durable and long-lasting.
Hiring professional painters to perform deck painting ensures a quality application. They use the right type of paint, proper techniques, and equipment like pressure washers and power sanders to prepare the wooden surface. This expertise extends the life of your deck.
Protecting Your Deck From Environmental Exposure
Decks are constantly exposed to environmental elements like UV rays, moisture, and extreme temperatures. UV rays weaken wood fibers, causing fading and brittleness, while moisture from rain or snow can seep into the wood, leading to rot, mold, and mildew. Temperature fluctuations cause the deck boards to expand and contract, resulting in cracks and splinters.
Deck painting provides essential protection from these elements. By creating a durable barrier, paint prevents moisture penetration, reducing the risk of rot, decay, and mold growth. It also shields the wood from UV rays, preserving its appearance and structural integrity over time. Additionally, painted surfaces help minimize the impact of temperature-related damage by stabilizing the wood’s surface against rapid expansion and contraction.
In addition to weatherproofing, deck painting enhances safety and usability. A painted surface is smoother, reducing the likelihood of splinters—especially important for families with children or pets. Many modern paints also include non-slip properties, minimizing the risk of accidents in wet conditions.
Painted decks are easier to maintain, as the protective layer repels dirt, debris, and stains, making cleaning less labor-intensive. This protection also helps deter insect infestations by sealing the wood against pests like termites. A well-maintained painted deck not only looks pristine but also requires fewer resources for upkeep over time.
By extending the lifespan of your deck and reducing the need for costly repairs, deck painting is a cost-effective investment. Combining visual appeal with functional benefits, it ensures that your outdoor space remains beautiful, durable, and safe for years to come.
Recommended Paint Types for Your Deck
Choosing the best deck paint involves considering options like acrylic, oil-based, and water-based paints, each suited to different climates with its own pros and cons.
Acrylic Paint
Pros: Quick-drying, eco-friendly, resists fading.
Cons: May need more coats.
Best for: Mild, dry climates.
Oil-Based Paint
Pros: Durable, deep color penetration.
Cons: Long drying time, strong odor.
Best for: Wet, harsh climates.
Water-Based Paint
Pros: Easy cleanup, flexible finish.
Cons: Less durable than oil-based.
Best for: Moderate climates.
Regardless of the type you choose, always use exterior-grade paint to ensure your deck withstands environmental exposure.
Prioritizing the best paint for your deck ensures longevity and beauty for your outdoor living space. The right paint not only enhances the deck’s appearance but also provides essential protection against harsh weather conditions and daily wear.
Tips for Maintaining a Painted Deck
Maintaining a painted deck ensures lasting beauty and durability. Begin by selecting the right deck painting finishes. Each of these finishes uniquely impacts the look and feel of your outdoor space, as well as its maintenance needs.
> Matte Finish: Offers a rustic look but may require more frequent cleaning.
> Satin Finish: Provides a balance of elegance and ease of cleaning, making it the best finish for decks with moderate use.
> Semi-Gloss Finish: Offers a slight sheen and is easy to clean.
> High-Gloss Finish: Reflects light and is the easiest to clean but may show imperfections.
Consider factors like deck usage and style preferences when choosing a finish. For example, a satin finish is ideal for decks with moderate traffic, providing an elegant look with manageable upkeep.
To maintain your painted deck:
1. Clean regularly with a deck cleaner to remove dirt and debris.
2. Check for signs of wear and apply a fresh coat of paint as needed.
3. Protect against harsh weather by removing snow and pooling water promptly.
These practices will help keep your deck looking stunning and protect it from environmental exposure. Additionally, using furniture pads and rugs can prevent scratches and scuffs, preserving the finish and extending the life of your deck.

To celebrate Valentine's Day, Mike and I booked a weekend getaway to Fredericksburg. Our first full day in town included a visit to the town's Marktplatz, or Market Square, which is situated along the 100 block of West Main Street. This public park features pavilions, walking paths, memorials, sculptures, and a wide variety of native plants and trees that collectively make up the Pioneer Memorial Garden.
Set amid the lush gardens is this handsome sculpture group titled ''Lasting Friendship'', which was created by artist J. Hester to commemorate the Meusebach–Comanche Peace Treaty. The kneeling figure is Fredericksburg founder John O. Meusebach and the seated one is Penateka Comanche Chief Santana (or Santa Anna), while the standing figure represents the other chiefs present that day. Two nearby plaques provide details on this work:
LASTING FRIENDSHIP
By J. Hester
John O. Meusebach, German settler and founder of Fredericksburg, and Penatuka Comanche Chief Santanna share a peace pipe May 9, 1847, at the signing of the treaty between the People of Fredericksburg and the Comanche Nation. The standing Comanche represents more than 20 other chiefs also participating in the treaty. This treaty is the only known peace treaty with Native Americans in United States history thought never to be broken. The spirit of this treaty continues in Fredericksburg today.
This bronze was presented to the City of Fredericksburg by the Fredericksburg 150th Anniversary Committee dedicated May 24, 1997.
A LASTING FRIENDSHIP
During Fredericksburg's 150th anniversary we celebrate the enduring friendship between the Comanche Nation and the People of Gillespie County. We honor the Comanches who helped to create and preserve this relationship and their descendants who have continued the friendship.
Chiefs Old Owl, Santana, Ketemoczy, Buffalo Hump, and Horseback were among about 20 chiefs present in 1847 at the San Saba River Peace Treaty Summit and at the Fredericksburg Treaty signing with John O. Meusebach, Fredericksburg's founder; also respectful friends Chief Quanah Parker, Herman Lehmann, and Rudolph Fischer.
