Col. Phillip J. Deppert, the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center commandant, gave opening remarks at the Language Capital of the World Cultural Festival in Monterey May 14. Deppert’s remarks emphasized the city’s rich international culture. DLIFLC partners with the local community to promote events that further cultural understanding and appreciation, and strengthen the institute’s bond with the city. The weekend festival featured music, flags, international crafts and food, dancers from many diverse cultures and a whole array of exhibitions. (Photo by Amber K. Whittington)
i discovered (too late for my birthday game--which, again, you can always play... and if you do i'll dedicate a photo to you on your bday : )) --that my birthday is also the european day of languages. it's a nifty coincidence, given my love of languages... also interesting to the lapsed catholic in me, because i imagine this day was chosen (in 2001) as a secular variant on st. jerome's feast day--which is today, sept. 30. jerome, who translated the bible from hebrew and greek into latin, is the patron saint of translators; his feast day has been adopted as international translation day.
but back to the european day of languages: its stated purpose is to celebrate "linguistic diversity, plurilingualism, and lifelong language learning"--all worthy goals. i'm not sure how they go about doing that, but their website asks people to submit their favorite words, which are presented as "language treasures." among them i find:
nebeprisikiskiakopusteliaudamas: lithuanian participial verb meaning "being not able to pick enough Brussels sprouts"
which, if true (big "if," as i know no lithuanian), is pretty great. if you've read this far and have any favorite words in any language (european or not), put 'em here.
Saw this on the back window of a car in a parking lot today. I have no idea what language it is, let alone how to begin translating it.
Does anyone know what it says?

I couldn't believe this. There really is a store here called hoochi mama. Another example of where there's cultural appropriation due to language barriers (like the fact swear words in English have a lot less power both here and in Finland). This was within the main department store.
I love English language games! This is a class of ESL beginner in Trujillo Honduras during one of our ESL exercises. For more info on English Language Games
Some are easy, even I can figure them out. If anyone wants to help with identification of languages, feel free to add notes.
The habs have done something awful that they haven't done since 1948, they got shutout 3 games in a row this week. The Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, and Washington Capitals all had their way with the habs, who have been out scored 11-0 over those 3 games. They have back to back games this Tuesday and Wednesday as well, their record for back to back games is not great either, it's a rough time to be a habs fan.
Luckily I have had some great distractions from the habbies this weekend. A few friends and I were down at The Ship tonight while Joanna Barker and Dead Language were followed by the Hunter Gatherers. It was another great night for music and a great night to distract me from the habs' woes.
