Kannada is the State Language of Karnataka. Kannada - aptly described as 'sirigannada' (known to few as Kanarese) is one of the oldest Dravidian languages and is spoken in its various dialects by roughly 45 million people worldwide.

The Kannada language has been spoken for about 2500 years, with the Kannada writing system being in use for about the last 1900 years. The initial development of the Kannada language is similar to that of other Dravidian languages, notably Tamil and Telugu. During later centuries, Kannada, along with Telugu, has been highly influenced by Sanskrit vocabulary and literary styles.

Kannada is a highly inflected language with three genders (masculine, feminine, neutral or common) and two numbers (singular, plural). It is inflected for gender, number and tense, among other things.

UNICODE 5.1.0 meets Or-Omcode∞.1.0

Unicode represents the Tower ob Babel en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Babel In computing, Unicode is an industry standard allowing computers to consistently represent and manipulate text expressed in most of the world's writing systems. Developed in tandem with the Universal Character Set standard and published in book form as The Unicode Standard, Unicode consists of a repertoire of more than 100,000 characters, a set of code charts for visual reference, an encoding methodology and set of standard character encodings, an enumeration of character properties such as upper and lower case, a set of reference data computer files, and a number of related items, such as character properties, rules for normalization, decomposition, collation, rendering and bidirectional display order (for the correct display of text containing both right-to-left scripts, such as Arabic or Hebrew, and left-to-right scripts). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UniCode

Museum of Chinese in America - Radical Machines Exhibition: Chinese in the Information Age

October 18, 2018 - March 24, 2019

Radical Machines: Chinese in the Information Age explores the seemingly impossible, yet technologically crucial Chinese typewriter – a machine that inputs a language with no alphabet, yet has more than 70,000 characters. For centuries, written Chinese has presented fascinating and irresistible puzzles for engineers, linguists, and entrepreneurs alike. With help from the global community, China solved these puzzles, and Chinese became one of the world’s most successful languages in the information age. Radical Machines explores the design, technology, and art of Chinese characters in the information age. Through a collection of rare typewriters and computers — and a diverse array of historic photographs, telegraph code books, typing manuals, ephemera, propaganda posters, and more — we gain unprecedented insight into the still-transforming history of the world’s oldest living language.

The exhibition originated at the East Asia Library of Stanford University and is curated by Stanford historian Dr. Tom Mullaney. Composed of items in his personal collection, which is the largest Chinese and Pan-Asian typewriter and information and technology (IT) collection in the world.

Human beings communicate not just verbally but also through the language of dress. Before individuals are close enough to talk, they have already stated their gender, age and class through what they are wearing. Very possibly given important information (or misinformation) as to their occupation, religion, current mood and personality. Before verbally interacting with one another, this visual language subconsciously registers and influences opinions; the impact of fashion.

Fashion characterizes or distinguishes. Often this is reflected in the dress of people through time. Political change and fashion, in theory and practice, are linked. In her book, The Social Psychology of Clothing, Susan Kaiser advocates that fashion can be defined as a prevalent style by a particular group at a particular time. Fashion may be linked to a specific cultural and historic era, in which there is general acceptance of a given style or look. Politics also influences what is acceptable in a given era. Hence fashion is a reflection of society at a given time in a particular group. Fashion speaks loud volumes about today’s society; how we view ourselves and other people.

I occasionally feel guilty for having a strong interest in fashion; that I may be seen as materialistic. However the opinion that “fashion is based on nothing more than elitism” was defended by Hywel Davies; “And while fashion is really elitist it’s also completely open to anyone from anywhere if they’ve got talent”. Fuelling my determination to become part of the fashion industry. A love-hate relationship, I want to nurture.
