I found this book in my father's book shelf. I found it really interesting. It may help people understand the real history of east asia, from people's side , not from the side of rulers. Taiwanese or Ho-loc-weei, was spoken in the central part of China thousand years ago , this language along with the people using the language move to the southeastern cornor of mainland china , Taiwan, Japan, vietnan, thailand, Philipines , Malaysia, etc , and created a marine business empire for hundred years ,yet not popularly known to most people. Through study of Ho-loc-weei, using your free association as you travel in these countries, you may find lots of interesting connections.
English Language Fellows Thai-Hoa Le and Shaheed Sabrin created and hosted the first intercollegiate, interstate English trivia tournament in Malaysia known as Malaysia May Madness or MMM. The tournament incorporated gameplays and elements from NCAA March Madness, Jeopardy, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Moreover, 32 teams from Kelantan and Sabah competed in the preliminaries to secure a spot in the “Elite Eight” that convened at Sidma College to compete for cash prizes, trophies, and bragging rights.

Decoding Language Symbols in Chinese Arts. Ms. Zhao Hua, Professor Confucius Institute at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Irvine Auditorium.
Ms Hua has an academic interest in Pun Rebus (谐音字画 Xié Yīn Zì Huà)—essentially wordplay in Chinese visual art. She has come up with an innovative teaching philosophy: learning the surprising meanings behind 《谐音字画》 Xié Yīn Zì Huà enhances students' grasp of the Chinese language and at the same time increases their understanding of Chinese culture. Her book on the subject titled《谐音"画"汉字》Xié Yīn Huà Hàn Zì, was published by Peking University Press in 2012.
This conference brought together scholars across humanistic and social scientific disciplines (such as history, literary theory, linguistics, and anthropology) to explore the articulation, circulation, and mobilization of ideas about language death and revival, language reform, and language modernization in the contexts of empire, emerging nationalisms, and a modernizing world.
This conference is presented as part of the Quest for Modern Language Between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, 1820–1948 research project at the Neubauer Collegium, co-sponsored by the Joyce Z. and Jacob Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies and the Franke Institute for the Humanities at the University of Chicago.
