Col. Phillip J. Deppert, the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center commandant, gave opening remarks at the Language Capital of the World Cultural Festival in Monterey May 14. Deppert’s remarks emphasized the city’s rich international culture. DLIFLC partners with the local community to promote events that further cultural understanding and appreciation, and strengthen the institute’s bond with the city. Students in my fall '06 MassArt visual language course. Here they are creating a batik. Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique used on textile. Batik is found in several countries of West Africa, such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Mali, and in Asia, such as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China, Iran, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand.

English Language Fellow Mathilde Verillaud introduced the idea of teaching American culture by using what students already know: their own culture. Using pictograms inspired by Liang Liu’ s work on the cultural differences between East and West, Verillaud demonstrated that students can compare, infer and eventually guess American cultural concepts through a process in which they describe their own cultural concepts. Teachers were extremely engaged. They laughed, debated, agreed and disagreed in a very lively discussion and were eager to include more cultural concepts in their classes.
