Col. Phillip J. Deppert, the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center commandant, gave opening remarks at the Language Capital of the World Cultural Festival in Monterey May 14. Deppert’s remarks emphasized the city’s rich international culture. DLIFLC partners with the local community to promote events that further cultural understanding and appreciation, and strengthen the institute’s bond with the city. The weekend festival featured music, flags, international crafts and food, dancers from many diverse cultures and a whole array of exhibitions. (Photo by Amber K. Whittington)
English Language Fellow Meghan Fatzinger and 16 students celebrated Earth Day by turning old copies of China Daily into new and useful items. Participants watched videos demonstrating how to make a basket, flowers, and dream catchers out of old newspapers and then settled in to get started. While they were working students started to discuss how they could help the environment by doing things locally.

English Language Fellow Ian Stone performed a 1.5 hour demonstrative English lesson at Shenyang Technician School. Throughout the lesson the host teacher was able to observe and take notes on concepts covered in previous trainings. Student centered teaching techniques and the communicative approach were demonstrated within the lesson while along with grammar and vocabulary activities. These kinds of events help to strengthen not only the Access Microscholarship Program but the efforts of the American English Language Program at large.
Some are easy, even I can figure them out. If anyone wants to help with identification of languages, feel free to add notes.
The habs have done something awful that they haven't done since 1948, they got shutout 3 games in a row this week. The Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, and Washington Capitals all had their way with the habs, who have been out scored 11-0 over those 3 games. They have back to back games this Tuesday and Wednesday as well, their record for back to back games is not great either, it's a rough time to be a habs fan.
Luckily I have had some great distractions from the habbies this weekend. A few friends and I were down at The Ship tonight while Joanna Barker and Dead Language were followed by the Hunter Gatherers. It was another great night for music and a great night to distract me from the habs' woes.
