Students in my fall '06 MassArt visual language course. Here they are creating a batik. Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique used on textile. Batik is found in several countries of West Africa, such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Mali, and in Asia, such as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China, Iran, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand.
Although he didn't understand English, this gentleman was contented for me to snap off a couple of images of him sitting on the dock at Darling Harbour.

English Language Fellow Mathilde Verillaud introduced the idea of teaching American culture by using what students already know: their own culture. Using pictograms inspired by Liang Liu’ s work on the cultural differences between East and West, Verillaud demonstrated that students can compare, infer and eventually guess American cultural concepts through a process in which they describe their own cultural concepts. Teachers were extremely engaged. They laughed, debated, agreed and disagreed in a very lively discussion and were eager to include more cultural concepts in their classes.

TRADITIONAL CLOTHES
Ishpata Baba means hello in KALASHA language.
The Kalasha/ Kalash tribe are indigenous (some of them have blonde hair and blue eyes) residing in the Chitral District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. They are animist.
I borrowed a traditional dress from one of the women and spent an afternoon walking along their village with them. 😊

What appears to be negative body language can sometimes be the complete opposite.
Went out for breakfast at the ol' S&M café and discussed mostly Guitar Hero and other video game stuff. And something about him fixing his his sister's Vauxhall Nova (putting the engine back together). Oh – and laughing about stuff that happened at work.
