Col. Phillip J. Deppert, the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center commandant, gave opening remarks at the Language Capital of the World Cultural Festival in Monterey May 14. Deppert’s remarks emphasized the city’s rich international culture. DLIFLC partners with the local community to promote events that further cultural understanding and appreciation, and strengthen the institute’s bond with the city. I found this book in my father's book shelf. I found it really interesting. It may help people understand the real history of east asia, from people's side , not from the side of rulers. Taiwanese or Ho-loc-weei, was spoken in the central part of China thousand years ago , this language along with the people using the language move to the southeastern cornor of mainland china , Taiwan, Japan, vietnan, thailand, Philipines , Malaysia, etc , and created a marine business empire for hundred years ,yet not popularly known to most people. Through study of Ho-loc-weei, using your free association as you travel in these countries, you may find lots of interesting connections.
English Language Fellows Thai-Hoa Le and Shaheed Sabrin created and hosted the first intercollegiate, interstate English trivia tournament in Malaysia known as Malaysia May Madness or MMM. The tournament incorporated gameplays and elements from NCAA March Madness, Jeopardy, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Moreover, 32 teams from Kelantan and Sabah competed in the preliminaries to secure a spot in the “Elite Eight” that convened at Sidma College to compete for cash prizes, trophies, and bragging rights.

The Clothesline Project for the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and the Presidio of Monterey took place at the Tin Barn on the Presidio April 13. Participants decorated shirts with a message or image they choose and displayed as awareness art against sexual violence.
The Clothesline Project started in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in 1990 to give survivors of sexual violence an opportunity to share how this taboo topic affected their life. The goal was to create a visual “in your face” display. Since then, the project has expanded to become a way for anyone to share a message about the impact of sexual violence and to support survivors.
