I was looking forward to some modern Chinese art, but at many of the museums they had a series of exhibitions on ‘Deutschland 8: Deutsche Kunst in China’. At the Minsheng Art Museum ‘The Language of Photography and the Düsseldorf School’.
I recently learned about something called competitive birding, in a most fascinating article in the latest issue of the Scientific American magazine. As one of the participants in the contest says, “This isn’t birding. This is war.”
So if you like war, or if you like to shoot birds, try competitive birding instead. Leave your gun at home and pick up a pair of binoculars. Birds didn’t do anything to hurt you -- why would you hurt them? Shoot with a camera instead.
Speaking of not hurting, if you have birds in a cage, please let them go. They belong in the open skies, not in a tiny prison. Thank you. (Think about how you’d feel if you were simply going about your day, on your way to get groceries for your family, and someone captured you and put you behind bars for the rest of your life. Same with the fish.)
A word in the mind is worth two in the book. This week we’ll share with you birds that have become metaphors in the English language. Call them bird words.

Today's word is dovecote (also spelled dovecot). From dove, from Old English dufe + cote (shelter, coop), from Old English cote. Earliest documented use: 1425. A synonym is columbarium.
NOTES:
The word is sometimes used in the idiom “a flutter in the dovecote” meaning “a disturbance in a settled, conservative group”. In Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, the title character, Roman general Caius Marcius (later given the name Coriolanus), has a thing for bird metaphors. He calls allowing plebeians (commoners) to have any power over the patricians (ruling class) as allowing “the crows to peck the eagles”.
When asked where he lived, he replies, “In the city of kites and crows”. Later, he brags “like an eagle in a dove-cote, I flutter’d your Volscians in Corioli” meaning that he destroyed Volscians in Corioli. Corioli was a town in the ancient territory of Volsci in Italy. It was in recognition of his military feat in Corioli that he was given the nickname Coriolanus.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Service members from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center once again led the parade at the 55th Annual Good Old Days, held in Pacific Grove April 14-15. Monterey County’s largest arts and crafts show, Good Old Days featured over 200 art and food vendors in downtown Pacific Grove, live entertainment, which included a performance by the DLIFLC Air Force Choir, old-fashioned games and contests, in addition to the parade.

For our final exam in sign class, we went out to eat and were not allowed to "talk" using our voices. Only sign. It was fun!

Urmia or (Turkish Language: اورمو, Urmu, Orumiyeh, Urmiye, Urmiya) is a city in Northwestern South Azerbaijan (Iranian Azerbaijan) and the capital of West Azerbaijan Province. The city lies on an altitude of 1,330 m above sea level on the Shahar Chaye river (City River). Urmia is the 10th populated city in iran and 2nd of Azerbaijanian Turks provinces after Tabriz. Students from 30 high schools and their teacher gathered Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Union South on the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the fifth annual Wisconsin Global Youth Summit.
The event was sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and UW-Madison's Institute for Regional and International Studies (IRIS), Language Institute, and International Reach (International Student Services).
Activities for students included small group discussions on what it means to be a global citizen, conversations with international students, and introductory lessons in a variety of world languages. The program also includes performances of Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art, and Okinawan taiko drumming.
Teachers participated in peer-led sessions that focused on Wisconsin's Global Education Achievement Certificate.
Participating high schools were: Amery, Appleton Area, Arrowhead UHS, Bonduel, Cedarburg, Cuba City, De Forest Area, Gibraltar Area, Grantsburg, Howard-Suamico, Janesville, Johnson Creek, Kettle Moraine, Lake Mills Area, Madison Metropolitan, Oconomowoc Area, Oregon, Pewaukee, Plymouth Joint, Pulaski Community, Shorewood, Slinger, South Milwaukee, Southern Door County, Tomah Area, Two Rivers Public, Watertown Unified, Wausau, Wausaukee, and Wauwatosa.

Through Language is a public art project, a visual dictionary and site-specific glossary alternating between Arabic, German and Hebrew.
Giving the Arabic and the Hebrew languages presence in the public sphere in Europe evoke issues relating to the presence of our cultures within Europe, in the past as well as in the present .
We hope to question the tendencies of the Western world to perceive Arabic and Hebrew languages and cultures as threats and thus refer to the constant uprising of xenophobia and Anti-Semitism in Europe. The project also proposes language and culture as an arena for listening and engaging in dialogue with others.
AugartenStadt was not chosen by chance; as "verlorene Insel (lost island)" was the main scene of Jewish displacement in 1938 – and as a site of new migration, it is the space of current conflicts between populism, xenophobia and Muslim self-assertion.

They worked with arts integration strategies centered around the Music of Language. Teachers tried the interactive strategies throughout the session as they used their bodies to keep a steady beat while manipulating language.
The Des Moines Botanical Garden was home base for K-2 teachers attending the third and final session of the arts integration PD series that's aligned with the K-5 EL literacy curriculum.
Spanish language upper-level students are displaying decorated altars through Nov. 5 in Ekstrom Library. Students in introductory-level classes have made100 giant kites (Guatemala), votive thank offerings (Mexico) and special bread (Mexico and Ecuador) that also are on display.
Latin American and Latino studies students are displaying altars to memorialize Mexican author Carlos Fuentes, Mexican singer Chavela Vargas and classmate Anthony Flaherty.

For the first time in history sign language was used in a marketing campaign to promote a sound system in a movie theatre. This campaign received a lot of attention and caused quite a stir among some parts of the deaf community.
