Étienne-Martin (Loriol-sur-Drôme, 1913 - Paris, 1995) was a French sculptor and object artist. He was influenced by Gurjieff and other esoteric movements. His work evokes the mystery of life in a suggestive way. In which he uses a pronounced baroque design language. Themes such as 'couples' (couples), 'demeures' (houses) and 'nuits' (nights), in other words embraces and enclosures, arise from the treasury of his memory: the artist's own world of experience takes shape in sculptural symbols and analogies. The images thus created are loaded with a mystical sense of nature and symbolize feelings and sensations. He himself says “Sculpture is architecture ... not a functional architecture to live in, but architecture to the heart and to the mind, full of sensibility. Sculpture remains poetry. These great works that I make are as if one can disappear into them ... "

Tribal youth display a message in the Ojibwe language in opposition to a proposed open-pit mine in the Penokee Hills in northern Wisconsin. The problem with Gogebic Taconite's proposed mine is that it is located at the headwaters of the Bad River which flows into Lake Superior, but not before it flows through the Bad River Reservation and rice paddies the tribe have been maintaining for generations. Samples taken at the site have shown the rock to be loaded with sulfide minerals and asbestos. Gogebic Taconite has already started ripping up the land to take their own samples (in massive amounts). The powers that be have also managed to legally bar people from entering the area which is on public land normally reserved for recreation and hunting.
The meaning of the lighted letters [From the script]:
Gego moonakeg!
This means: Don’t go digging!
Don’t go digging. Don’t go digging, Gogebic Taconite!
The company name Gogebic is interesting. It comes from
Googiibike
Gego googiibike!
“Googiibike” or Gogebic translates as:
Don’t dive into the metal!

i am completely captivated by the welsh language. here is where it all started. the day that this was taken, i decided that i was going to learn the welsh language by this time next year. it all happened when we were on one of the trains to portmeiron, and the train ticket/platform said, "train to llaludno." when the announcement came on, the recording said..."this train is for llaludno"...but it sounded like this: "this train is for 'flaandidnoor.' " the welsh language has 28 letters, in contrast to the english alphabet's 26, but doesn't use a handful of english letters. so they have a bunch of letters which are unique to them, and the pronounciation is unlike anything i've ever seen. i also insisted that eric's family and i watch some welsh-language television while we were staying in the cottages in porthcawl, pre-wedding. it was pretty mind-blowing. becky's now-husband (eric's now-brother in law) made it a point to learn welsh, because he is incredibly proud of his family lineage. one day i will be able to call him and have a conversation in this language. mark my words.
