Learning a second language is fun and has many developmental benefits. Knowing a few signs can give your child the confidence to engage and interact with a deaf child rather than both children feeling awkward and helpless. Here is a set of sign languages for beginners. I tried to clarify the relation between matter and language, from the original chemical components of life (as self-organisation) to the emergence of species, ethno-linguistic groups, programming languages. This cladogram draft permits me to map clearly the shortest path from matter to language (red line). Of all this complexity, interwoven histories, some simplicity should emerge...

The proximity of 2 elements on this tree also make the compatibility of the elements more obvious : compatibility of human and other mamals organ transfert, compatibility of 2 close-by computing syntaxes.

This cladogram is very simplified regarding the complexity of evolution, just a few branches out of the main path. I might continue this research here, feel free to advise me on this subject, if you know a software that does wonderful graphics of interwoven cladograms, I am interested.

Nov.3, 2018: Evening view of Luxor Temple lit up.

Luxor Temple is a large Ancient Egyptian temple complex located on the east bank of the Nile River in the city today known as Luxor and was constructed approximately 1400 BCE. In the Egyptian language it is known as ipet resyt, "the southern sanctuary".

Constructed over hundreds of years by Amenhotep III, Ramses II, Tutankhamun, and other pharaohs, Luxor Temple was the largest and most significant religious center in ancient Egypt. In what was then Thebes, Luxor Temple was “the place of the First Occasion,” where the god Amon experienced rebirth during the pharaoh’s annually reenacted coronation ceremony. Today, remains of this vast complex include the colossal Great Colonnade Hall, almost 61 meters long, with 28 twenty-one-foot-high columns, its decoration largely undertaken by Tutankhamun around 1330 B.C. Many of the temple’s sidewalls were torn down after the time of the pharaohs and recycled for building materials.

Life-size Queen Nefertari statue recovered. Before excavation in the 1960s, the temple’s sandstone fragments were in direct contact with salt-laden groundwater that leached into the stone. After excavation, exposure to changes in humidity mobilized these salts and accelerated deterioration. Between 2001 and 2007, World Monuments Fund directed a grant from the Robert W. Wilson Challenge to Conserve Our Heritage to the conservation of Luxor Temple. Over 1,000 deteriorating blocks and inscribed wall fragments underwent consolidation and treatment, which arrested their decay and allowed for early stages of reconstruction. An outer section of the eastern wall of the Colonnade Hall was stabilized with a brick buttress concealed with sandstone slabs in order to blend into the original stone of the temple. Another major group of 48 fragments, which completes the depiction of the divine barge and towboats of the hawk-headed moon-god Khonsu, was inserted into the base of that buttress where it joins the wall. A life-size statue of Ramesses II’s chief wife Queen Nefertari, intact to the knees, was recovered, cleaned, and protected. Missing portions of her legs were located, carefully returned to the statue, and also protected.

The thousands of sandstone fragments retrieved from the vicinity of Luxor temple contain carved and painted details of hieroglyphic texts and temple ritual scenes; once identified, documented, and consolidated, many have been joined and reassembled into whole wall scenes, as part of the Wilson Challenge Ancient Thebes Initiative. Also funded by this challenge initiative were the portico added to the Karnak Temple by Thutmosis III in 1400 B.C. and the Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III in the Theban Necropolis.

This old poster was a nice surprise in a British-themed pub in downtown St Pete. The reflection of a wall light forced me to phot it at an oblique angle, but here's a chance to boost my Welsh vocabulary.

I taught my daughter several signs from the American Sign Language (ASL). She does not have a full ASL vocabulary as she only knows 7 signs. But you know what, just three of those signs have saved us so much grief. I know when she wants "more", I know when she's hungry and wants to "eat", and I know when she wants her sippy cup to "drink" from. I don't have moments of frustration at meal times (okay, maybe some frustration sometimes..we're both human after all). The short of it though, is that sign language has helped us communicate better, even with just a few signs.

Has it hampered her speech? No, not really. I think it wires the brain to connect that all objects have names. And the words she can say, she says. She can say more for example, while signing. But she can't say the hard word "cracker" yet, so she signs that (it's incidentally her favorite word). Other words I didn't teach her the sign for but she instead says are "bird" and "water".

It would be the ultimate understatement to say I'm proud of her.

Vision, Language, and Influence:

Photographs of the South by Baldwin Lee, Walker Evans, and Eudora Welty

Knoxville Museum of Art

May 14 – August 1, 2010

Vision, Language, and Influence brings together for the first time the work of three photographers of the American South over a 50-year period. Walker Evans (1903-1976) is represented by incisive images of Alabama sharecroppers stemming from his epic collaboration with James Agee on Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Eudora Welty (1909-2001) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern writer and photographer who traveled across Mississippi in the 1930s and early 1940s taking photographs and documenting rural and small-town life in her home state. Baldwin Lee (born 1951) is a professor of photography at the University of Tennessee, and a former assistant to Walker Evans. Complementing the 50 or so works by Evans and Welty are more than 30 of Lee’s images of African-American life in the South taken during the 1980s with the support of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Vision, Language, and Influence was organized by the Knoxville Museum of Art in collaboration with Baldwin Lee.

There are some professors from UCLA that come up to my neighborhood and record the song of warblers in an attempt to understand the language. I suggested to them it might be more interesting to people if they figured out what dogs were saying instead....

Although there is a positive relationship between dogs and human language, a dog has no concept of the "English" language.

However, According to Hungarian scientists who published a groundbreaking study, dogs understand the meaning of words and the intonation with which they are spoken.

Let's say that even if you tell your dog in a very excited tone that he needs to go to the vet, he will probably see right through you and not want to go.

It doesn't matter what the sound is called. You could teach it the Spanish word for "sit," the English term for "turn around," and the Chinese word for "wait."

It doesn't learn multiple languages, and it doesn't know that these words come from different languages.

The dog knows that when the human makes that sound, it should respond with a sound of its own; when it makes a particular sound, its owners praise it with treats and love.

Dogs' Understanding Of The Human Language

In the twenties, there was an elephant in a circus who was thought not to know any tricks, but it turned out that he knew all the schemes but responded only to Polish commands. So they had to retrain him in English. This story was made into the book/movie Water for Elephants.

Most Dogs Understand Human Language

The rhythm, patterns, tone of voice, and body language extensively communicate our intent to the dog. They can learn commands if someone takes the time to teach them consistently.
