Eagle Rock, California. A Grey Water Garden with supplemental rain water capture system with cistern

An imaginative twentieth century re-creation of a renaissance castle garden. The moated Chateau dates from c1536 and had a formal garden in the eighteenth century. The present garden dates from the years after 1906 when it was bought by a Spaniard, Dr Joachim Carvallo. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, he wished the garden to have a sixteenth century character. Great horticultural skill was deployed, especially in the use of vegetables. An arbour of grape vines leads to a great parterre, conceived as a Garden of Music. On the other side of the canal is a Garden of Love. Symbolising the moods of love, it looks rectangular from the chateau but is actually trapezoid. The aesthetically designed vegetable garden is based on an illustration from Du Cerceau's Les plus excellents bastiments de France (1576). Despite its origins, Villandry is the work of a twentieth century imagination.

Tropical houses and landscaping in Port Douglas, far-north Queensland

LUC has worked on multiple projects at The Hurlingham Club, providing Landscape Design and Planning services which recently culminated in the completion of the new Racquet Centre.

The careful design of the building and surrounding landscape was crucial to ensure the facility fitted sympathetically into the grounds, within a Conservation Area and Metropolitan Open Land, and met other requirements of the planning authority. We therefore helped the Club organise an architectural design competition which was won by David Morley Architects (DMA).

The building design had to incorporate a number of sustainable features while reducing light pollution and the visual impact of the roof line. Externally it was important find technical solutions to retain the mature London Plane trees and ensure that there would be no net loss of parking spaces or increases in areas of hard landscape.

With the Design and Planning teams working together, LUC submitted a detailed planning application which secured permission and coordinated the related Section 106 agreement.

The project was on site for one year, with LUC novated to the contractor. Regular site visits ensured that external elements were implemented correctly and to a high standard.

The new building fits gracefully into the surrounding landscape with a curving green roof and contemporary brick detailing, matching the quality of the older clubhouse buildings. It provides four high specification indoor tennis and squash courts, a multiple use games area with changing facilities and viewing gallery. Natural daylight and ventilation is utilised whenever possible with lighting and temperature control systems seamlessly integrated.

The building is accessed by a gently sloped path alongside the refurbished external tennis courts and entrance forecourt. It is finished with beech hedges, semi mature trees, shrub planting, reinforced grass parking areas and new paths.

The superb building and much improved facilities are now being enjoyed by members who appreciate the quality of detailing and well executed design.
