Here are some photos from the James Monroe Birth site LD refresher program. Virginia Federation of Garden clubs sponsored the program at Colonial Beach VA on Historic Garden restoration. As part of the refresher the attendees along with people from the community including the VA Dept of Forestry, Westmoreland County extension service, Ingleside Winery, Local Master Gardeners and local Boy Scouts. All had to be approved by the Army Crops of Engineers, County of Westmoreland and their board of supervisors, state of VA We studied a LD Master Plan developed from Nelson Bryd Landscape Architects from Harrisonburg, VA. The site was also approved by the National Historic Preservation Society since the site is on the national historic records. NGC awarded a grant to help with the project. The VA LD Council contributed funds and had a historic plant sale. The County of Westmoreland also funded a professional LD firm to come in and do the site development for the VFGC garden at the James Monroe Birth site. Since then a lovely reception building has been built. The new James Monroe Foundation is in control of the site. Westmoreland County still handles the garden maintenance along with local and state wide garden clubs.
The GARDEN landscape plan was in the shape and size of the Monroe home as discovered from archeological digs at the property over the last 50 years. The VFGC garden the first clean-up and planting on the property once riddled with rubbish such as old car parts and kitchen appliances. Research was done through the Bureau of Historic Plants at Monticello in Charlottesville to insure accuracy as to what plants would be common in the historic time period. From the garden there has been much interest in having the site look inviting to visitors.

The Hinoki Cypress grows into an elegant, full-sized tree with fan-shaped sprays of dark green foliage, and white, X-shaped markings on the underside.

The highest point of the bank originally encased the house to the 1st floor. The bank was excavated releasing much needed light into the ground floor, whilst the shaped terraces created lawns and planting space.

T h i s project frames secrets as that which cannot be possessed outside the garden. The design relies upon the immateriality of reflection and sound to provide visitors with a unique sensory experience.
As visitors interacts with the reflective surfaces and produces or hears sounds, the garden and its ‘secrets’ change, disallowing the garden to be recorded or truly understood outside that moment perpetuating the secret.
Two berms lie opposite another, supporting a mirror-finished aluminum ring. The ring confronts visitors with fractured reflections of the surrounding gardens. Traveling up and around the berms, visitors duck under the ring, entering a protected bowl, that cradles sounds. A split view of earth and sky presents an altered reality causing visitors visual disorientation, thereby increasing their reliance upon auditory and tactile senses.
A series of tubes run through the berms; small openings at tube ends embedded in grass await discovery. Visitors may pass secrets across the threshold of the ring through the tubes. The tubes cross, so one may not know to whom they speak.

Working with the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) the U.S. Mission invited a group of Landscape Architecture students from the U.S. and Switzerland to develop a long term plan to make the U.S. Mission grounds greener and more sustainable.

A view of the cobbled paving, in addition to its resemblance to the regional qualities, the surface is a canvas for the figural shadows cast by the pine trees.
Working in collaboration with Eric Parry Architects and Latz + Partner, LUC was selected by Saxon Generali Real Estate to design a roof garden at One Fen Court, a new 17-storey mixed-use development at the heart of the City cluster in the City of London.
LUC’s services included planting design, pre-selection and specification, planning and inspection to deliver the soft landscape for the building’s 2,200m2 rooftop terrace. The garden, which is fully accessible to the public, sits 65m above street level and offers 360o views across London’s skyline.
The roof garden is designed to include all the best aspects of a public space whilst integrating building services and energy efficiency requirements. It provides a refreshingly tranquil escape from the dense City cluster and streets below. Our scheme sensitively combines seasonal herbaceous planting with exposure-tolerant and evergreen grasses, vines and espalier fruit. Its centrepiece is a grove of 88 wisteria supported on a pergola, providing shade, scent and shelter to the roof terrace.
As the visitor moves around the garden the quality of light changes with the aspect and the time of day and season. Moving water on the southern edge of the roof provides relief during warm spells.
