landscape design is a relaxing hobby. However it may not be easy. You may need landscape design ideas or landscape design tips. Or you can join online landscape design schools teaching by means of landscape design software.
T h i s project frames secrets as that which cannot be possessed outside the garden. The design relies upon the immateriality of reflection and sound to provide visitors with a unique sensory experience.
As visitors interacts with the reflective surfaces and produces or hears sounds, the garden and its ‘secrets’ change, disallowing the garden to be recorded or truly understood outside that moment perpetuating the secret.
Two berms lie opposite another, supporting a mirror-finished aluminum ring. The ring confronts visitors with fractured reflections of the surrounding gardens. Traveling up and around the berms, visitors duck under the ring, entering a protected bowl, that cradles sounds. A split view of earth and sky presents an altered reality causing visitors visual disorientation, thereby increasing their reliance upon auditory and tactile senses.
A series of tubes run through the berms; small openings at tube ends embedded in grass await discovery. Visitors may pass secrets across the threshold of the ring through the tubes. The tubes cross, so one may not know to whom they speak.

Here are some photos from the James Monroe Birth site LD refresher program. Virginia Federation of Garden clubs sponsored the program at Colonial Beach VA on Historic Garden restoration. As part of the refresher the attendees along with people from the community including the VA Dept of Forestry, Westmoreland County extension service, Ingleside Winery, Local Master Gardeners and local Boy Scouts. All had to be approved by the Army Crops of Engineers, County of Westmoreland and their board of supervisors, state of VA We studied a LD Master Plan developed from Nelson Bryd Landscape Architects from Harrisonburg, VA. The site was also approved by the National Historic Preservation Society since the site is on the national historic records. NGC awarded a grant to help with the project. The VA LD Council contributed funds and had a historic plant sale. The County of Westmoreland also funded a professional LD firm to come in and do the site development for the VFGC garden at the James Monroe Birth site. Since then a lovely reception building has been built. The new James Monroe Foundation is in control of the site. Westmoreland County still handles the garden maintenance along with local and state wide garden clubs.
The GARDEN landscape plan was in the shape and size of the Monroe home as discovered from archeological digs at the property over the last 50 years. The VFGC garden the first clean-up and planting on the property once riddled with rubbish such as old car parts and kitchen appliances. Research was done through the Bureau of Historic Plants at Monticello in Charlottesville to insure accuracy as to what plants would be common in the historic time period. From the garden there has been much interest in having the site look inviting to visitors.

The Horniman Museum and Gardens were given to the people of London for their ‘recreation, instruction and enjoyment’ in 1901 by Victorian tea trader Frederick John Horniman.
His wealth allowed him to ‘bring the world to Forest Hill’ in the form of a Collection that covers Natural History, Anthropology and Musical Instruments. The Museum also has an Aquarium and 16.5 acres of Gardens.
The Horniman is now an attractive and busy local museum, very well used by schools and families, with over 50% of its visitors under the age of ten.
LUC has coordinated and led the masterplan, research and development of new facilities, including securing HLF funding, and the project was completed on site in 2012.
The Gardens were an integral part of Horniman’s gift and the aim of LUC’s new masterplan is to take interpretation into the Gardens. This extends the existing resources for learning and exploration by using the unique Gardens to grow exhibits — eg. the ‘Living Collection’ showing the fibres used in clothes, musical instruments and tribal masks, and a World Food Garden, reflecting the vibrantly diverse local community.
This is an exciting project as it is not just about preserving physical fabric. When developing the masterplan, we were keen to bring together the existing ideas of this well-established institution and also look at things in a new way.
The museum has sat within Gardens since its inception, however the idea of making a direct connection to the Museums exhibits brings a new dimension to the place and strengthens the link between the Collections and Gardens.

Transplantation and planting of mature olives to create an instant orchard. These olive trees are approximately 500 years old but have only been in this garden for a few months.

This outdoor fireplace in Waxhaw, NC uses a synthetic stone for all the vertical surfaces and a natural stone for all of the vertical surfaces.
The cut-out above the fireplace features a low voltage light fixture.
These last photos show the gazebo installed over the hot tub to provide shelter and privacy. This product is from www.whitepavilion.co.uk and is a clever mix of timber, stainless steel and PVC canvas to create this fantastic gazebo. The garden was designed by www.postalgardendesign.co.uk and built by www.wyldldandscapes.co.uk.
The westernmost courtyard in the complex (though open on one side). This design, while having many nice elements has a riot of 'machinery' in it that creates quite a bit of visual chaos. There's irrigation access valves, manhole covers, emergency call kiosks, among other such items littered about. It seems like landscapes require so much 'stuff' now, there should be a design manager just for the utiilties of the design.
Strangely enough, the visual chaos wasn't the worst type of chaos here. Just over the tree with leaves on the left is a speaker that belts out an aggressive bird species' call to ward away any local birds enthused by this new habitat. Bring in the birds, but scare them away from nesting. More importantly, the frequent speaker jars the visitor trying to relax and enjoy the ubiquitous avian life going on here.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build
A Funky Communal Roof Terrace in Canning Town, London E16 4LG
Brief:
The client owns a number of flats within a private residential block in Canning Town, East London. The block is home to approximately a hundred residents. Currently, the block benefits from a communal roof terrace. However, this space is uninspiring and mainly used as an area for smoking and the occasional barbeque. The brief was to develop a second roof terrace for communal use by the residents. Views out from the terrace include the Millennium Dome and the canopies of the trees in a neighbouring park. These views should be emphasised in the new design.
Solution:
The design creates a contemporary and vibrant space using a series of modular units, comprising steel planters with built-in seating and tables on a grid of interlocking decking. These units vary in size to provide places to eat or relax for varying sizes of group. A large section of artificial lawn located in the sunniest corner of the terrace will feature a number of built-in, bespoke, artificial lawn covered sun loungers/seats. The decking features a large square insert of turquoise Perspex, which will be backlit to bring the space to life in the evening. The Perspex theme is continued with the addition of brightly coloured, varied length Perspex rods through the planters, while Perspex armchairs provide durable and contemporary individual seating.
Specimen shrubs provide structural backbone to the planting scheme, complemented by evergreen grasses to give colour and movement, and hardy architectural plants that will maintain their appeal throughout the seasons. The planting is also chosen for its vibrant foliage colour and low maintenance. Two sides of the terrace will be screened using small, coloured Perspex squares on stainless steel tension wire interspersed with planting, to allow privacy to the residents that own terraces directly below without masking the surrounding views. On a third side, a structural glass screen makes the terrace safe but does not affect the views. Smokers are provided with an area of seating in a sheltered spot located close to the doors out on to the terrace. Shelter from the wind comes from large specimens shrubs.
