First solo exhibition by Dublin-based artist Meadhbh O'Connor, BIOSPHERE. The show was held in Monster Truck Gallery, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 in May – June 2011.

This installation was part of an ongoing investigation of ecology, noxious species, scientific classification and human intervention in nature. The work incorporated approx. 1300 individual pieces of laboratory glassware (1000 x 10mm test tubes, 200 x 12.5mm test tubes and approx. 100 miscellaneous pieces of lab glassware including beakers, bottles, round bottom flasks, distillation apparatuses, condensers and other items); and the collection of noxious weeds taken from waste ground in Dublin.
250+ pieces of glassware were suspended from a steel grid attached to the ceiling of the gallery. Each piece of glassware contained a bindweed cutting taken from waste ground, many of which began to root during the exhibition. Some of the pants had been previously propagated and grown using hydroponics.
Along with the glassware, a column of bindweed vines was suspended from one quarter of the grid, standing at the full height of the gallery (4.3m).
Underneath the suspended glassware and vine, glass planes were balanced on laboratory bottles and arranged on the floor in a broken-up grid formation. On the glass planes, 1000 test tubes holding bindweed were arranged in about 30 wooden racks.
As part of the exhibition, Dublin-based curator and writer Sean O’Sullivan produced a piece of writing that examined the environmental issue of invasive species which you can read here.

9 little babies and their mommy came in to the shelter on Wednesday. They are about 6 weeks. These are 3 of the girls and 1 of the boys.

I took it in at the waist, and added the epaulettes, and swapped out the buttons (skull and crossbones instead of plain ones). Amazing how the simple addition of shoulder tabs and different buttons turns it from a lab-coat to a military uniform.
In Chester, the shops are on 2 levels. The Watch Lab is on the lower (street) level. You have to visit Chester to appreciate how this works......
