Seems I rationalized buying some fancy Ilford film for documenting some class projects. Photography was another attempt to push the envelope, like when I turned in a thermal-printed paper ribbon generated by a calculator program I wrote to solve some homework problems. The teaching assistant gazed into the distance for a moment and said something thoughtful about how someday everyone would do their work that way.

This project was a lab that all mechanical engineering students had to do. I believe we adjusted a cone at the end of the duct, measured air pressure differences (and hence air flow) at various points inside the duct, and documented the results in a paper. Typing centered equations with a manual typewriter was not for the faint of heart.

Although I was using the same sturdy Nikon F, I don't think I owned a flash then. I must have relied on a combination of fast film and a relatively slow exposure, to work under fluorescent light in the basement of the mechanical engineering building.

Recently got a dual monitor stand from Monoprice. Can't get over how much more room there is on my desk now.

Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), one of the world’s leading agricultural processors, which is headquartered in Decatur, Ill., has given the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) a gift of $1 million to support a dedicated laboratory space designed specifically for student experiential learning. The ADM Center for Agricultural Development, which will be located in the Agricultural Engineering building on the MU campus, will provide space for valuable student-faculty interactions, enhanced student team learning, and capstone design projects.

Lab Bench Still Life.

This shot appears exactly as I found it.

Labs accumulate little familiars and totems with both official and unofficial duties. One lab I know (and which shall remain nameless) passes around the "fish of shame": a plastic fish given to someone when he or she breaks a piece of equipment or does something equally boneheaded. The rule is that the fish must be prominently displayed on the bench and must remain with the unfortunate recipient until someone else does something bad deserving of special notice.

More often the role of lab familiars is not to humiliate but to amuse or encourage. The guys above are clearly enjoying the view from their (glove) box seats and rooting for the people in this bay. My first grad student acquired a little mechanical cowboy for the lab who alternated between crawling on his elbows and knees and shooting a lever-action Winchester. At some point he was dubbed M.R. Nutty and in our first three papers he is gratefully acknowledged for "helpful discussions".

The Coffee Lab in Everson 126 on the UC Davis campus is the site of the “Design of Coffee,” a popular general admission course developed by Prof. William Ristenpart and Prof. Tonya Kuhl in 2012 to better engage a diverse population of students and stoke excitement around coffee and engineering. The undergraduate class, now offered every quarter, enrolled more than 1,500 students during the 2015-16 academic school year. “Design of Coffee” was also voted the best GA course on campus in 2015 by the California Aggie, and has the highest enrollment of any elective course offered at UC Davis.

I purchased the Big Barker bed for my 14 yr old black lab, Cosby. He is slow moving and doesn't use stairs anymore...luckily we have an elevator...I felt he deserved the best supportive bed at his age and that's why I bought the Big Barker. Cosby took to the bed immediately. I brought home my chocolate lab, Mocha, age 11 weeks last week and she loves the bed too...it can accommodate both dogs...for now. There's only one problem...,I also own a yellow lab, Lily, age 4....she likes sharing our bed, but I bet she would prefer her own Big Barker. Guess it's time to buy two more beds soon!!

The Georgia Tech Sonification Lab is an interdisciplinary research group based in the School of Psychology and the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech. Under the direction of Prof. Bruce Walker, the Sonification Lab focuses on the development and evaluation of auditory and multimodal interfaces, and the cognitive, psychophysical and practical aspects of auditory displays, paying particular attention to sonification.

In late April, Samantha and I were at a birthday party for my nephew. The night before our friends informed us they would be at Bauhaus Brew Labs that evening and that we should stop by. Conveniently, my sister lives in Northeast Minneapolis and it was a quick drive to their taproom.

Scientists and engineers utilize NETL’s state-of the-art Mechanical Testing Laboratory to determine the mechanical behavior and performance of materials. Our researchers test a material’s ability to withstand cyclical mechanical loads for a large number of cycles and resulting crack growth behavior of materials at temperatures up to 1200 °C. They also study the ability of materials to withstand mechanical loads for long periods of time up to 1100 °C. This Lab also has capabilities to test a material’s compressive and tensile strength—the resistance to breaking under tension—from room temperature to 1200 °C, as well as impact testing and hot-hardness testing.
