Since we were at Home Depot a lot that week, we noticed this tri-grip ratcheting screwdriver set was on sale for $5. We bought a couple of extras for other people. It turned out to be a lifesaver, because screwing in the anchor and reenforcing brackets was too hard to do manually, and absolutely imposible to do with a power drill. The ratcheting screwdriver's large tri-gip handle adds a lot of torque to your screwing ability! We also soaped our wood screws -- this made them go into the wood much easier.
We also got a bunch of small LED flashlights since they are on sale too -- like 25 @ $1/each.

BACKSTORY: Too much raccoon noise in the attic! Time to install a built-in ladder, so that we can get up into the attic in 60 seconds to scare away any animals before they decide to move in again. Project cost exceeded $350 and involved 5+ Home Depot trips.
Sunday challenge: Experiment with shutter speed today by making a photo with a long exposure.
For today's picture I used one of the scene settings on my Panasonic Lumix. There is a Starry Sky setting and it lets you choose 15, 30 or 60 seconds for exposure.
This picture was taken using the 15 second exposure. For the light I used one of those led keychain flashlights that are given out as freebies. I used a 10 sec. delay so I could get in place before the picture was taken.
So today I went out and bought some Yankee Candle Christmas scented candles. Since we don't have a real Christmas tree and I live in the back house formerly a garage now my room/lab of dreams I needed to buy these.
I also want to mention that I was trying to get into the Christmas spirit by watching Elf, Home Alone, and a few other Christmas movies but couldn't. This should definitely help put me in the Christmas spirit.
Lens: 35mm
Lights: 3 LED flashlights. One pointed top left above the candle which I hand held with my left and I took this with my right. Another one pointed at the glass cup in the background on the right and another one on the left side pointed at the other candles.

Microsoft Explorer Mouse. "Strobist" (used in the loosest sense) done with two LED flashlights.
Funny story about this. So I have to use the glass table in the living room to get that reflection and the pitch dark background. Since the mouse's lighting from the bottom only kicks in after it's been lifted from its charger base and detects something under it, or re-activated from sleep mode, I needed to set up everything meticulously, run to the room where the mouse was, put it in the charger for 1 second, then run back to the living room all the while making sure it didn't come in contact with anything that would trigger the lighting.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun,
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
'Stay where you are until our backs are turned!'
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,
One on a side. It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, 'Good fences make good neighbors'.
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
'Why do they make good neighbors? Isn't it
Where there are cows?
But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That wants it down.' I could say 'Elves' to him,
But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me~
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father's saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, "Good fences make good neighbors."

We replaced the fence last week. Smells great. The something that doesn't love a fence is Hurricane Ike.

It is very risky to talk on the cell phone while driving. Hence, you must have this car kit which helps you get out of this dangerous situation while allowing you to receive the calls. The unit enables you to enjoy handsfree conversation. Furthermore, the car audio system serves as the speaker of the cell phone so that you are provided with crystal clear calls. In addition, the noise-reduction and echo-elimination features are very useful extras.
Did this sort of product shoot for my younger brother. Lighting was done by holding a bright LED flashlight on the logo in dark. Dont have much proper lighting equipment yet so making use of whatever i can get my hands on :)
Someday, really, I promise, I'll abandon this fascination with roundy shiny objects and bright lights. but before I become my own worst cliche I return once more. This time with a shiny steel ball from my Magnetix collection.
Look closely, you'll see my knuckles. As if that matters.

Same watermelon four loko, just inverted the colors. Not something I would normally post up back to back with the original but I think it works. Please to enjoy.

This is an LED flashlight.
For 2009: A Year In Pictures. I think starting this project is a big enough deal. But I also realize I was working on Roxie while I did this, so it'll be a good memory prompt. :)

This in-car DVD player is a decent choice for your mobile video needs. Watching video on the 7-inch screen is great delectation. However, the unit is not just limited to the appearance. It does an equally excellent job in the feature area. If radio is your thing, you will be happy to see that AM/FM tuner is incorporated. And the built-in TV tuner gives the device a more realistic edge. Furthermore, the support for Bluetooth handsfree profile is an attractive extra. TRADESTEAD provides you with such a fantastic value which comes with a modest price tag.

This admirable baby monitor will do a big favor for the parents. When it comes to the picture quality, the CMOS camera assures sharp images. Furthermore, the 2.5-inch LCD screen is a big plus. In addition, the four channels for option mean that you can find a free one which is handy so as to get rid of interference in the electronics-cluttered environment. If you are looking for a gadget which allows you enormous freedom and give you peace of mind, this unit is a solid choice.
We did this with a 50mm in the confines of a balcony. Sasha was like "I have sparklers" and I was like "i have an LED flashlight" and we were like "let's draw". So spur of the moment and nothing fantastic.
Slavik said 'you're supposed to do this outside'
I said '...yes.'
And he says I don't listen to him ;)

When we tried to play Gnostica, we realized we needed even more light than the candles. Clint rigged up the LED flashlight hanging on the headless baby doll's legs, which coincidentally were turned backwards to create a creepier effect. This effect was not only mimicked in Xavier:Renegade Angel, but also makes for a superior LED flashlight hanging post.
The light reflected off the table and back onto the ceiling, creating an interesting blue/red effect. If only I had a better camera...

I recently re-found my printer's loupe, which I've held on to for probably 15 years or so. The lens is a little scratched up and a touch cloudy, but it's still fun to use when looking at textures. I thought I'd use it in a couple shots.
I have a 3M PostIt note upon which I scribbled inky blackness with a Sharpie (I'm all about trade-names!). This little 3x3-inch square of night became the background for a couple experiments. I like it because it's dark, yet textured, and flat. And tiny.
As with many of my close ups, the light is provided by my 1 watt handheld LED flashlight. Handy gizmo, that.

A different angle on the same pencil and loupe. I had to really fiddle with the histogram to make this one work, and I may have played too much. But I liked the murky shine on the pencil too much to let this one die away in obscurity.

Among the last of my night-photos while in Nashville last week.
Detail from a door at midnight: I walked by the door, dismissing it out of hand. But when I looked again I noticed some rusted scrawling. So, I used my hand-held LED flashlight to raise the letters a little bit.
I have no idea what the original scribbling referred to: the sign was missing. I enjoyed the irony. There was nothing there. Does that mean nothing means me? I mean nothing? Rust means me?
Who can say?

I enjoy finding interesting things to photograph in normal, everyday objects.
The cats' outdoor water bowl kept freezing up today. When I went to empty it, I saw the interesting patterns in the ice shards. So, out came the pocket camera with its sweet macro mode. The light wasn't good, so I played with the LED flashlight.
Something about this view reminds me of the earth ... like the view from outerspace.
