My son's latest interest: LED flashlights. He converted an off the shelf flashlight into one with a stronger LED and driver. Here he is testing it out at the Black Rock Desert in Nevada at night. It was cloudy, and the moon just came up. He could shine at a trailer that is over 500 meters away. He still wants to go farther using an aspheric lens etc.

My first attempt at light painting. Doing it macro proved a bit of a challenge but it was fun. The mini cupcake liner is 1" high and 1.5" in diameter. And I tried many many times to get the right shape 'cupcake'!

Light source info: A small led flashlight with a black piece of construction paper rolled into a cone shape taped to it. The black paper was rolled in a cone shape to make a more direct and small light beam. Then I taped a small piece of red cellophane over the tiny hole to give it the pink hue. Very high tech and oh-so-attractive piece of equipment!
The cupcake liner is illuminated because I started the light source inside of it then moved it above to make the cupcake shape
Just a few shots that I can't bring myself to delete...
Oh, for all of you thinking "what's that, is he using flash?", I can say no, it's absolutely low-tech, I had my son hold an LED flashlight to give some cold side light.

"Dahner Burgengruppe" - Pfälzer Wald
There are four castles belonging to the "Dahner castles group", three of them (to see here) were built on the same rock but all were built at different eras.
When the strong floodlights of the castle were switched off at the beginning of the night, the atmosphere of the surrounding landscape, supported by the light of the full moon, changed abruptly.
(It's a bit ironic that it's me now who lights the castle:)
Last storms has knocked over a few of the pines up here, a big one of them lies uprooted and close behind to the tripod and blocked a bit the view.
It was also windy up here that night, which made it difficult to stand still for a few seconds in front of the camera, so I set again the ISO slightly higher.
I created the heart using an LED flashlight and a 30 second shutter speed. The red portion comes from the light illuminating the blood in my fingers.
Minimal post-processing on this -- I cloned out the fishing line used to suspend the fishie and ran the noise filter to cut down the high ISO noise.
Made with this RGB Flashlight found at the Herrmientas Light Painting website.

So why is this tree Famous?
Tom Lowe, overall winner of the 2010 Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest has shot this tree a LOT. You can see why. Pre-order his timelapse movie for an extra treat! I can't wait for my copy!
I took this photo prior to the "Dark of the Moon Night Photography Workshop" sponsored by the Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA). We were based at Crooked Creek Research Station - a fantastic spot to be with 3 meals a day expertly prepared by Tim. We're eager to do it again next year - already have the dates nailed down (as much as they can be this far in advance!).

Senior session. Started late and just ran out of light. No problem...
She was standing in the water while I was setting up the Quadra. I needed a flashlight to see, and when I aimed it at the water, this is what I got. The quadra is behind me with a softlighter and I just used the LED modeling light for fill.

This is my first experiment with long exposure. Something new... It is not perfect and much can be improved. I beg for your indulgence. Process of learning.
The light source is an LED flashlight.
Photo of the day March 07, 2022 - Illuminated LED flashlight. My wife purchased a couple of these lights at the beginning of winter.
Great local band. Check them out at:

Senior session. Great light just tickling through some shrubs at the end of the day. Lighting on subject was a silver reflector and an LED flashlight.

Light painting of a four loko. Used two flashlights, one a triple LED windup with colored tissue paper, and a cheap small one from Walmart with half green half red color paper over that one. Classed up a real crap drink. Please to enjoy.
Used my 1-watt LED light on this one, as well. The light's in the same hand, I'm shooting with the other. Striking!
Actually, the pose I had to hold to get this shot was probably striking, as well! I didn't want the spotlights and street lamps around my house to show up in the shot, so I am actually holding the globe about a foot or so above my head, and trying to get a good angle, a good composition, a good highlight and to not drop either the glass globe or the LED flashlight were challenging.
I'm sure if anybody saw me, I would've looked quite silly.
But the shot speaks for itself. It's worth it!

I was working on a design for a financial report for my church. Traditionally, this report features a world-missions theme in the design. So, while standing in our worship pastor's office, I spied this little crystal globe on her desk. So, I stole it. (With her permission, of course!) You'll probably see a few more treatments of this - hope you don't get bored!

Broken B+W 55mm XS-Pro Clear MRC-Nano 007 Lens Filter.
I really enjoyed photographing the broken glass and experimenting with different lighting.
Lighting:
Natural light
Small L.E.D. flashlight
I put the flashlight up to the cameras viewfinder.
Shining the light at different angles gives various results.
The flashlight gave a nice cast on the top half of this photo so I cropped it.
Cropping is the only edit on this photo.
I did a shot with two LED flash lights. One big daylight happy light. Over the top of marbles. For got the room light was on dim. Found out in photoshop. But I did not remove the color on the sides of the marbles. did about fifty shots. I was changing the lights looks each time. then did 3 Hours photoshop time. I think it looks very cool. The fun games I played be for computers came to be. this was my Fathers marbles be for me. I lost a few over the years. But always have held on to the fun looking ones. So I hope this will bering back old thoughts for some of you.

Glaciator is looking for more power crystals. He is willing to blow up his cave to find them!
More here on all the different shots I took.

This was such a fun project, I'll have to come back to it a few more times.
Dear friends,
One of my son's friends and he wife are emissaries to Mombai. They are amongst the people I recently described as dedicating their lives to spreading goodness and joy to all around them. They have not been heard from since the beginning of the terrorist attacks there. Please pray for them. May God protect all of us.
Update. The news is that their home was attacked and they and their baby were taken hostage and wounded. The baby was subsequently released. There are reports that the Rabbi and his wife are unconscious. Please pray for them and all the victims of terror.
I grew up with this Nativity set, so it's at least 65 years old. It got a lot of use when I was a kid. There were some wax choir boys, angels and reindeer that were part of the scene too, but they have been lost to time.
This year, for some reason, I asked Kate if we still had it and she dug it out and put it up. Then I developed an idea for a picture. This comes satisfyingly close to what I had pre-visualized.
Technical: In order to get the effect of a lantern illuminating JMJ, I used an LED flashlight with a flexible neck and a yellow gel. The Three Wise Men are concealing the head and the whole flashlight is black so I didn't have to Photoshop anything out. Then, two SB600's, with blue gels, were used in a shoot-through umbrella (camera right) for the overall scene. Triggered by CLS. Finally, I focus-stacked three images in Photoshop. And thank the Lord for gaffers tape.

A trio of L.E.D. flashlights used for painting with light. One with a homemade telescopic snoot and another with a spot grid. The L.E.D. lights are a little bit cooler in color temperature so I usually use a warming gel ( CTO 3410 ) over them.
This was a deep, dark and creepy flooded cellar beneath the shuttered school of the now ubiquitous Gary Methodist church. If you EVER want to test your nerves, try navigating this space with a penlight and pair of rubber boots some time.. Bwah-ha-ha-ha!!!
This was just a bit of a long exposure with an led flashlight. It was total darkness in this part of the cellar. Can you smell the dankness and hear that drip-dripping??
