At first this may look like smoke, but look again! This was taken using time lapse photography, my nalgene water bottle, and my LED flashlight.
Much of this I carry with me in an ancient REI pouch/man-purse. The Moleskine, the Scribbler, the Rotring Titanium, and the Neiko 28 LED light (runs off 3 AAA batteries) all inhabit the pouch. The Fisher Bullet Space Pen inhabits my pants pocket. The Lamy Safari pen and pencil go in my shirt pocket. The Universitaria notebook is new and lives at home.

This is my Rayovac Highbeam 3W LED flashlight I've used and abused at work for about five or six years. It's showing it's age, but it still works great...tough as nails!
Took a walk in the park the other night. Decided to take my camera and my LED flashlight to see what I could find. I decided that the bleacher-seats looked interesting with a little bias.

The spring loaded contact in the base of the tail section connects to the "driver" which controls the voltage. "Hoodoos in Technicolor." My Canon 6D and Canon EF 35mm f2.0 IS USM lens were mounted on a Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod with German-made Kaiser ball head. The moon was waxing, about 60% full. Light breezes, temperature in the upper 80s.
How did I do this shot? The exposure was ISO 200, aperture was f10, four separate shots each at 70 seconds. I used a $49 Vello timer. All four rocks were lit with a 2 D-cell LED Mag-Lite from the right side. I started with the rock on the right, which is about 10 feet tall. It was lit with a red theatrical cellophane gel in front of the flashlight. I "painted" the rock about 12 seconds. The next 70-second shot was done with a double-gelled deep straw theatrical gel in front of the flashlight. That rock was painted about 10 seconds. The third 70-second shot was with a lime theatrical gel. The rock was painted about 10 seconds. The lime-gelled image had the best sky, background and foreground, so it became my background image in Photoshop. The last 70-second shot was with a purple theatrical gel. I painted that rock about 20 seconds because the gel was dark. I had to take 18 shots to get the four shots I liked. This took me about 50 minutes to do. Taken on Friday, June 22, 2018.
The four images were composited together into one image in Photoshop. This was accomplished by making lots of feathered inverted selections and deletions in Photoshop layers. I sharpened the image slightly by using an onOne Effects HDR Look Exaggerated Edges n Tone layer.

A pencil suspended above a field of textured, inky blackness. Is it a metaphor? A visual simile? Or me just fooling around?
The latter, probably.
I have a 3M PostIt note upon which I scribbled inky blackness with a Sharpie (I'm all about trade-names!). This little 3x3-inch square of night became the background for a couple experiments. I like it because it's dark, yet textured, and flat. And tiny.
I illuminated the pencil with my handy-dandy LED flashlight.

Love the way this one came out! Placed him on top of my computer monitor with the "Cosmos" screen saver on. Held an LED flashlight to the right of the camera while a standard bulb lamp was to the left. Did the motion blur in Photoshop.
My wife found this guy crawling along the rafters in our garage, so naturally I had to crawl up on a rickety chair, LED flashlight in one hand, digicam in the other, to try to shoot him. I liked the dramatic, shadowiy shots best.
Though, "dramatic" and "caterpiller" don't really seem to belong in a sentence together.

Crenelated aluminum cover contains a flat tempered glass lens. The 5mm yellow dot in the center of the lamp head is a bright white CREE LED emitter. And the deep mirror polished reflector produces a long throw of the beam. The CREE XM-L T6 and XM-L U2 emitters cast a very bright white beam.
Someday, perhaps when I'm 50, I'll stop taking these pictures. I console myself by saying that they're "studies" in light, contrast, and hue. But, no, not really. They're just interesting shots for me.
Note, this shot was taken in broad daylight.You get more than a dozen LED lights shining at once and things get pretty contrasty.
