This box of leads, made by the Eagle Pencil Company, was used by Deborah Chwalow Direnzo for her work as a graphic designer. She most likely purchased the box in the late 1960's and after her death in the early 1980's it was passed down through her family and is now in the possession of her niece, Ilana. Though damaged, it serves as one of Ilana's connections to her aunt.

On 19th August 1930, 14-year-old local schoolgirl Edith Keighley rescued a younger Riddlesden boy after he had fallen into the Leeds-Liverpool canal. The plight of the boy was witnessed by a Mrs. Scaife, but before she could even raise the attention of some nearby workmen, Edith had dived into the canal and seized the boy, bringing him safely to the bank.
Edith, who lived with her parents, John and Dorothy, on West Lane in Keighley, was a pupil at the Drake and Tonson’s Girls’ Grammar School where she had taken swimming lessons and had competed in some swimming competitions. The incident was written up in the Keighley News of 23rd August 1930.
Edith went on to marry textile worker Joseph Moore at Keighley Parish Church in 1940. They lived on Exley Mount and had three children. She worked in the accounts department of Ford car dealers Walter Burgess Ltd. for thirty years until retirement. Her dedication to the safety of others saw her join the Keighley Road Safety Committee in 1956 and was made secretary and organiser in 1964. In 1989, this thirty-three years’ service was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, when Edith, then 74, was awarded the British Empire Medal. The medal was presented by the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Lord Ingrow, at a ceremony held in Keighley Town Hall. Edith passed away in 1999.

The black tie gala also will support Greek NGOs that foster economic development opportunities and provide crisis relief for underserved communities in Greece, particularly children. Last year’s gala raised more than $2 million.
This year’s honorees:
Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever and THI’s Regeneration program partner. THI’s ReGeneration program was launched in 2014 to train, mentor, and place highly qualified millennials in internships at top Greek and multinational companies. More than 320 internships have been created at more than 100 companies. Recognized as the top internship program in Greece, more than 80 percent of participants secure a contract extension or hire.
