The Great Heath 10KM 2013 Road Race and Fun Run was held at The Great Heath, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, Ireland on Sunday 20th January 2013 at 11:00. This leads on from two very successful previous runnings of the event by The Heath GAA club and the local community. The race starts and finishes at The Heath GAA club (just adjacent to the M8 Motorway). This event has grown in popularity and it was again very well organised. The very cold winter weather of the past few days made sure that running conditions were about right. There was a tough breeze in places on the course which followed a left-handed loop course into the Laois countryside. The success of this year's race is reflected in the 600 finishers that finished the race. This is well up on the 450 participants from the 2012 event. Well done to everyone involved.

Diagram showing how more AMPA receptor proteins and increased glutamate leads to a stronger connection (LTP) between two neurons.
If these events happen frequently, the receiving cell responds by increasing AMPA receptors on its surface, making it more sensitive to glutamate. The sending cell also increases the amount of glutamate it releases. Together, the changes strengthen the receiving neuron’s response to the sending neuron — a phenomenon called long-term potentiation (LTP).

The track looking ahead leads to downtown Chicago by way of the Rock Island Line, arriving at the La Salle Street station. The tracks crossing, is the Heritage Corridor line, also going into downtown Chicago arriving at Union Station. The building to the left is where the switchmen reside. The grand staircase leads to William III’s State Apartments. On the wall is “Victory of Alexander over the Cæsars”, by Italian artist Verrio. The twelve Cæsars represent the Catholic forces that William has ousted in the Glorious Revolution. William is the hero Alexander.
King William wanted to inspire awe in his visitors as they climbed up to the piano nobile—the principal floor. He employed the Italian painter, Antonio Verrio, to create the illusion of a great Roman hall as the setting for the story of a competition between the commanders Alexander the Great and Julius Cæsar, who vied for a seat beneath the gods’ banquet on the ceiling above. No doubt that the warring William identified with the victor, Alexander, but contemporaries would have understood a second message: that the Roman Catholic James II had been defeated by a Protestant leader.
The treads of the King’s Staircase are all made from several pieces of stone, supported on walls or arches. It is worth mentioning that the balustrade was made by Jean Tijou. The top landing is very remarkable. It is almost three meters wide and is formed out of many pieces of stone cleverly jointed together. There is a wall below about two meters back from the free edge, so the pieces must be jointed to allow the landing to cantilever. The joints on the soffit appear to tally with the ones on the top.

Reaching High Leads
How would you get to a mysterious black hole, called a “lead” by cavers, high above your head? In 1982, three cavers used helium balloons! During the first trials, they floated fishing line up toward the hole, They hoped to snag one of the three stalagmites on the ledge (look up) called the Three Monkeys, but the line kept breaking. After many attempts with a parachute cord to pull up a climbing rope, the trembling explorers slowly scaled the rope to views never before seen by humans. The passage they discovered and named the Balloon Ballroom only went 30 feet (9 m) before ending.

The Hellenic Initiative (THI), which leads the Greek diaspora community internationally in raising awareness and capital for Greece, is hosting its 6th Annual Gala on Friday, September 21 at the New York Hilton, 1335 Avenue of the Americas in Midtown Manhattan, to raise funds that will be invested in entrepreneurial programs in Greece. The black tie gala also will support Greek NGOs that foster economic development opportunities and provide crisis relief for underserved communities in Greece, particularly children. Last year’s gala raised more than $2 million.
This year’s honorees:

THI’s ReGeneration program was launched in 2014 to train, mentor, and place highly qualified millennials in internships at top Greek and multinational companies. I was trying out my new toy which is allows small adjustments when shooting in macro. Not a great shot but it passed half an hour when the telly was rubbish!

The People of Washington are in a virtual Tug of War with corporate special interests in Olympia over the state budget. Funding for social services are at stake.
On Wednesday, members of SEIU Healthcare 775NW showed legislators, staff and visitors to the Capitol what the Tug of War actually looks like.
On one side were caregivers, and "clients" using a walker and even one in a wheelchair. On the other side were the special interest tax breaks - a chicken, a private jet, a rat (representing Wall Street Banks) and cosmetic surgery.
(Chicken farmers get a tax break for the bedding they use for their chickens, people who purchase a private jet don't have to pay sales tax and there's a tax break for elective cosmetic surgery.)
During the Tug of War, Members chanted: "We need healthcare, hey hey, ho ho, corporate tax breaks got to go, while the other side chanted, “we need our money, tax breaks are no mistake”
Caregivers had a lot of fun bantering back and forth and garnered a lot of attention from legislators and staff who stopped by. It was a fun way to deliver a serious message. Several legislators stopped by to join the “People’s Side."
