The Siq is a 1.6 km long narrow gorge that leads into the city of Petra, emerging dramatically in front of the Treasury. The entrance to the Siq was originally marked by an ornamental arch; it collapsed in 1896, but its decorated abutments survive.
The Siq is not technically a gorge, as it was formed not by erosion but tectonic forces, which caused the the rock to split dramatically in half. It was only then that the waters of the Wadi Musa flowed in and the winds blew through the newly-formed gap, gradually rounding the sharp edges into smooth curves. Today, the Siq is a meandering path between beautifully-colored sandstone cliffs about 200m high on each side. Occasionally the path widens enough to allow in warm sunlight and even a tree; other times it becomes so narrow (as little as 2 meters apart) that the stone seems to block out virtually all heat, light, and sound.
Along the way are some small niches, shrines and carvings to investigate, and running alongside the length of the Siq are water channels carved by the Nabateans to provide water to the city of Petra. Anticipation builds as the walk goes on, and the end of the Siq is a dramatic moment - planned that way by the Nabateans to impress their visitors. The gorge narrows, and the soft curves of the Siq frame a sunlit strip of an extraordinary sight: the Treasury.

The grand staircase leads to William III’s State Apartments. On the wall is “Victory of Alexander over the Cæsars”, by Italian artist Verrio. The twelve Cæsars represent the Catholic forces that William has ousted in the Glorious Revolution. William is the hero Alexander.
King William wanted to inspire awe in his visitors as they climbed up to the piano nobile—the principal floor. He employed the Italian painter, Antonio Verrio, to create the illusion of a great Roman hall as the setting for the story of a competition between the commanders Alexander the Great and Julius Cæsar, who vied for a seat beneath the gods’ banquet on the ceiling above. No doubt that the warring William identified with the victor, Alexander, but contemporaries would have understood a second message: that the Roman Catholic James II had been defeated by a Protestant leader.
The treads of the King’s Staircase are all made from several pieces of stone, supported on walls or arches. It is worth mentioning that the balustrade was made by Jean Tijou. The top landing is very remarkable. It is almost three meters wide and is formed out of many pieces of stone cleverly jointed together. There is a wall below about two meters back from the free edge, so the pieces must be jointed to allow the landing to cantilever. The joints on the soffit appear to tally with the ones on the top.

Ingi Sveinbjoernsso leads his horses on a road covered volcanic ash back to his barn in Yzta-baeli, Iceland on April 18, 2010. They come galloping out of the volcanic storm, hooves muffled in the ash, manes flying. 24 hours earlier he had lost the shaggy Icelandic horses in an ash cloud that turned day into night, blanketing the landscape in sticky gray mud.
