AMTK 157 leads the Disney Train east heading to the Midway Amtrak station in Saint Paul where it will sit on display for the festivities taking place in the station's overflow parking area. The train is seen here running past University where it was overtaking a BNSF freight which had departed the yard just moments before I saw the headlights of the Disney train come into view. You sure don't see something like this rolling down the rails everyday. Please forgive me for the harsh light!
Edward Bykowski leads pickets against Senator Theodore G. Bilbo outside Bilbo’s apartment at the Capitol Tower apartments at 208 Massachusetts Ave. NE, Washington, D.C. on October 15, 1945.
Bykowski was Navy veteran who was outraged by Bilbo’s attacks on African Americans, members of the Jewish faith, Italians and others and began a one man picket against Bilbo. Other veterans who had fought against the fascists during World War II quickly joined him.
Bykowski related in an interview that he was of Polish Catholic descent and that while under attack by the Japanese on the heavy cruiser Vincennes his left leg was fractured in four places.
Bykowski told about the action on the Vincennes when an African American shipmate, “…kept passing the ammunition with his right arm after the Japs [sic] blew off his left.”
“There was Danny Boy. He died in my arms His hand opened up. He had been clutching the six-point Start of David.”
“He [Bilbo] has abrogated everything that veterans have died for and suffered the agonies of hell for.”
The Senate eventually postponed seating Bilbo after the 1946 election and Bilbo died in August 1947.

Cardinal Seán leads the new bishops to be seated among the other bishops and at his left and right hand for the remainder of the Mass.
Cardinal Seán O'Malley was to ordain Bishop Arthur L. Kennedy, Ph.D., and Bishop Peter J. Uglietto, S.T.D., as Auxiliary Bishops for the Archdiocese of Boston on Tuesday, September 14, at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston. The ordination was to be followed by a reception at St. John Seminary for the two new bishops.

First lady Michelle Obama leads a reenactment planting of a Cherry Blossom Tree on the 100th Anniversary of The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C.
It was March 27, 1912, when First Lady Helen Herron Taft and Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador, planted the first two trees from Japan on the north bank of the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park.
For the March 27th 2012 planting First Lady Michelle Obama planted her tree in West Potomac Park, the closest cross streets to this planting location would be Ohio Drive SW at West Basin Drive SW.

MRS. OBAMA: Thank you. Thank you so much, it is a true pleasure to be here on this beautiful, little chilly day. (Laughter.) We planned it. This is the only cold day of the week, and we are here. But I am pleased to be here.
I want to start by thanking Secretary Salazar for that very kind introduction, and for all of his outstanding work as Secretary of the Interior.
I want to thank and recognize Ambassador Fujisaki, as well as Mrs. Fujisaki, who are here today. Thank you all so much, I know you're here somewhere -- oh, you're here. (Laughter.) It's good to see you both. And I want to thank all of you for taking the time to join us for this historic event.
We have come together to celebrate these beautiful cherry blossom trees -- and yes, they were blooming last week. We were so close. (Laughter.) But I think the tree we're planting will -- still has a few blooms, but they are beautiful. And we are here to honor all that they stand for. For so many years, these trees have served as a symbol of the great friendship between the United States and Japan, and as a reminder of our shared hopes, dreams and aspirations.
People from both of our nations worked together for years to bring these trees here to Washington. And over the past century, people of all ages from the U.S. and Japan and so many other nations have come to this Tidal Basin each spring to marvel at their beauty. And year after year, even after the coldest, darkest, stormiest winters, these trees have continued to bloom.
So on this historic anniversary, we don’t just admire the beauty of these trees, we also admire their resilience. And in so doing, we are reminded of the extraordinary resilience of the Japanese people. Over the past year, we have all witnessed their courage, unity and grace as they have come together and begun the very hard work of rebuilding their nation.
And I think that that more than anything else is the lesson that we can learn from these trees. They teach us about all that we can achieve together. And because people from both of our nations came together, this landscape was transformed. And for one hundred years, people from every background and every walk of life have come here to experience, truly, the magic of these trees.
No matter who you are, their beauty stirs our souls. No matter where we’re from, being here among these beautiful blossoms truly lifts our spirits. And that is why we invited all of these wonderful children to join us -- where are the children? There they are. (Applause.) They are here because we want them to learn this lesson as well; we want to pass this lesson onto them. We want to teach them about the great partnership between our nations and what that means for our shared future. We want to teach them to appreciate and learn from the traditions and cultures of others.
And we want them to be inspired by the example of our friends in Japan who have worked so hard and who have been so brave in rebuilding their lives. Because in the end it will be up to them, this next generation, to continue that great friendship. It will be up to them to carry these traditions forward so that one hundred years from now, their children and grandchildren will be able to come here to this very spot and see the tree that we will plant, full grown and in full bloom.
And I hope that on that day, the First Lady –- or the First Gentleman –- of 2112 will also have the privilege of joining with our friends from Japan, and planting another tree which will bloom for yet another one hundred years and beyond.
So with that, I want to once again thank you all for joining us today, and bearing the frigid cold. If you stick around for one more day, it will be 80 tomorrow, I guarantee you. (Laughter.) It's really nice weather here. But we are truly honored to have you here, and it's a pleasure to be able to join in this very special occasion.
And with that, I think it is time for us to plant a tree. (Applause.)

The way through Karijini NP leads over more or less serviced gravel roads. At some places they are really corrugated, which is the reason you usually pay extra for your rental car to enter the park. Not that other parks are any better, but if travelling north this is one of a handful spots you are definetly going to visit and as the rental car dealers know about it, they make you pay for it. A perfect example is Purnululu National Park. For a visit you won't get charged, no fee applies (but I was far more worried that the car wouldn't make it).

5791 leads L549 with a short train of nickel concentrate loads at Sands. The stub track in the foreground was once a 77 car siding, in the early days this area was home to several sidings from only a few miles apart, when the towns never developed the sidings and stations were pulled up and removed. Today all that remains here is a short stub siding and a AEI tag reader.
Local union President Mary Gannon leads the picket line April 8, 1947 at the C&P Telephone headquarters at 13th & G Streets NW on the second day of a nationwide strike against the Bell System by 325,000 phone workers.

The union was seeking a nationwide contract.
The strike crippled long distance service and those phones not equipped with direct dial.
AT&T refused to negotiate a nationwide agreement and only offered a small wage increase after workers had been on strike for three weeks. Four weeks into the strike, 17 local unions had signed local agreements. The nationwide strike collapsed and it marked the end of the NFTW.
However, the Washington operators continued their strike until May 18, 1947, holding out for written guarantees that there would be no reprisals.
The strike, however, succeeded in making the case for a stronger national union, with the Washington traffic union one of those pushing hard.
In June 1947, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) was formed as a national union, incorporating most of the locals of the NFTW, including the D.C. unit. Similarly the union later voted to affiliate with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) with the support of the Washington unit in 1949.
Gannon’s militant leadership of the Washington Telephone Traffic Union helped galvanize other unions around the country as she led sympathy strikes in support of their issues in the mid 1940s..

Dut leads the Dirty Dozen brass band down Claiborne Avenue for a second line funeral. This is part of a series, In God’s Hands for Eternity, from the early-1980s.
Paula leads the group (followed by Sarah, Gemma, and Jamie) as they descend down the steep natural ramp that links the coastal trail to the beach.
This was taken during our last weekend with my daughter Gemma and her Fiancé Jamie before they flew back to England... we spent the weekend at the coast, starting on Saturday at Half Moon May where Gemma, Jamie, Sarah and Paula enjoyed a ride along the beach while Jan and I played with Ashlyn in the sand, then we went down the coast stopping at a few beaches on the way, ending the day as we watched the sunset at Pacific Grove. We stayed overnight in Monterey and then Sunday morning we went whale watching followed by a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium before coming home. It was a fantastic weekend.
