P. Neruda

Le Mans 2010
Last year’s victory by Peugeot over Audi was a major upset. Audi had won all but one Le Mans race since their first victory in 2000. The Peugeot team raised everyone's game and posed a proper challenge.
Audi redesigned their R15, now called the R15 Plus, with more conventional aerodynamics wrapped around the diesel V10. Despite the effort, qualifying showed Audi were still off the blistering pace of the Peugeots.
Audi's DTM partner Team Kolles again ran a pair of ex-factory 2008-spec R10, but both failed to finish.
Peugeot again made relatively subtle updates to the formidable and already very, very fast 908. Most obvious was covering the raw carbon of previous years with gorgeous deep blue and chrome foil, but some changes were deep under the skin.
In addition to the full three-car Peugeot factory effort, Hugues de Chaunac’s Oreca team runs a fourth 908 as well as one of his own 01 LMP1 cars.
Rebellion run the very latest Lola coupes and begin to settle into a legacy of glorious and flashy polished-foil livery graphics.
Aston Martin return with two factory-run cars and one run by Signature Plus. Their quick pace is undermined by some driving and transmissions issues. Only one factory car finished.
Courage returns, in a way… Strakka and ALMS-champions Highcroft Racing run HPD Acura Honda cars in the LMP2 class. The HPD ARX-01 was co-developed by Courage and based off their LC70 project. (Recall that Oreca bought Courage and continued development of the LC70 into the Oreca 01. So that car and the HPD are effectively half-siblings)
Dome and Pescarolo withdraw their entries. And despite continued success in ALMS, no Porsche RS Spyders were entered at Le Mans.
Great weather and minimal yellows meant the pace was brutally fast, Peugeot storming ahead of Audi. Early in the race, the Pole-winning Peugeot tore its suspension from the tub and was out. Next in line was Montagny in Peugeot #2 which was absolutely stomping away throughout the night. Audi appeared out-classed again but they kept their cool and ran the race they way they were comfortable. In a true tortoise-and-hare allegory, the early morning light saw the leading Peugeot launch its engine in a spectacular fireball, leaving one lone factory car several laps back to run down the Audis. With Davidson in #1 running at an all-out qualifying pace, they did. Lap by lap, the saga unfolded with dramatic all-in racing. Within range of the leading Audi and just a few hours to go, the final factory Peugeot lunched its engine too. The relentless pace revealed the new titanium connecting rods were a weak link, and they were letting go in catastrophic mechanical self-annihilation. Ultimately in the final hour while reeling in the third-place Audi, the last-hope Oreca-run 908 suffered the same fate, bringing the epic edge-of-your-seat battle between Audi and Peugeot to a close. As a small consolation, Oreca’s 01 roadster was fourth overall and fastest of the petrol cars.
2010 was Audi’s ninth win, tying legendary Ferrari for 2nd in all time overall victories. The race also set a new distance record bettering the distance set by the Porsche 917K in 1971, the final year the beastly Sports prototype cars were allowed to run (and when the Mulsanne had no chicanes!).
