Because France had just emerged from two major wars: The Thirty Years’ War in 1648 and later the war between France and Spain, King Louis XIV planned the building of Les Invalides which would serve as a home for disabled war veterans. Les Invalides was not only intended for housing but also for medical care. Still today the building functions as a hospital and home for war veterans as well as a military museum that honors the Army of France.
Architect Liberal Bruant helped to bring the dome into Renaissance architecture with Les Invalides (1679-1708). In spite of this innovation, the classical aspects of the building are nothing new in the architectural realm. The tall columns and triangular pediment were typical in the time period. The famous dome that tops the structure proved to be a challenge for many architects. When Bruant died, Jules Hardouin-Mansart continued with the difficult task. A number of architects were experimenting with the best method of constructing a dome. According to Gibberd, the largest problem in building a dome is “that from the outside a dome tends to look flatter than it really is.” In order to overcome this obstacle, Mansart built three domes, one over the other; therefore, the dome visible from the outside is actually superfluous to the actual structure and stability of the building; it is simply decorative.

It's official; I'm off of my hiatus! I actually start school tomorrow so this is a weird spot to pick up from, but hey, it works!
I flipped Ange's fringe today and I'm rather happy with it. She looks rather sweet. I decided again that all my dollies are going to all get the full body+acrylics+wig treatment, and a lucky few of them are going to get partial face-ups! Does anybody know where to get some realistic acrylics that aren't twenty bucks?
Anyway, I hope to take some better pictures this month, I'm starting to sew again so hopefully I can manage to scrape up something good!

The city of Le Havre, on the English Channel in Normandy, was severely bombed during the Second World War. The destroyed area was rebuilt according to the plan of a team headed by Auguste Perret, from 1945 to 1964. The site forms the administrative, commercial and cultural centre of Le Havre. Le Havre is exceptional among many reconstructed cities for its unity and integrity. It combines a reflection of the earlier pattern of the town and its extant historic structures with the new ideas of town planning and construction technology. It is an outstanding post-war example of urban planning and architecture based on the unity of methodology and the use of prefabrication, the systematic utilization of a modular grid, and the innovative exploitation of the potential of concrete.
1975 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. Modified for Johnny Marr of The Smiths. The tiger stripe top has been added, along with the five minihumbuckers and maple in neck. Three of the volume/tone knobs are push/pull to activate pickup variations. I have never heard anything like it, it does all the Les Paul sounds but can also do strat tones and country tele tones. Seems the same guy turned a strat into a seven pickups model for him as well.
Marrakesh, Morocco
The Majorelle Garden is a botanical garden in Marrakesh, Morocco. It was designed by
the French artist Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962), in 1924, during the colonial period
when Morocco was a protectorate of France. Though Majorelle's orientalist watercolours
are largely forgotten today (many are preserved in the villa's collection) the garden he created is his creative masterpiece. The special shade of bold cobalt blue which he used extensively in the garden and it's buildings is named after him, bleu Majorelle.
The garden has been open to the public since 1947. Since 1980 the garden has been owned by Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé. After Yves Saint-Laurent died in 2008 his ashes were scattered in the Majorelle Garden. The garden also houses the Islamic Art Museum of Marrakesh, whose collection includes North African textiles from Saint-Laurent's personal collection as well as ceramics, jewelry and paintings by Majorelle.
The garden hosts more than 15 bird species, which can be found only in the area of North Africa.
