Rumoured to be the world’s busiest, this intersection in front of Shibuya Station is famously known as ‘The Scramble’. It’s an awesome spectacle of giant video screens and neon, guaranteed to give you a 'Wow – I'm in Tokyo!' feeling. People come from all directions at once – sometimes over a thousand with every light change – yet still manage to dodge each other with a practiced, nonchalant agility.

The E233 series, developed by JR East and introduced in 2006, is an electric multiple unit (EMU) train designed for suburban and commuter lines. These trains offer enhanced accessibility and comfort with features like wider seats, air filtration systems, and LCD information screens. A prominent line utilizing the E233 series is the Chūō Line (Rapid), which connects Tokyo to Takao. This line is known for its rapid services, stopping at fewer stations than local trains, enabling faster travel across the city.

The E233-0 series is a specific variant of the E233 series, introduced in December 2006 to replace the older 201 series trains on the Chūō Line (Rapid). These trains maintain the improved accessibility and comfort features of the E233 series and include backup systems for reliability. The E233-0 series operates in various formations, such as 10-car and 6+4-car sets, to meet different service needs. While primarily used on the Chūō Line (Rapid), they also serve the Ōme, Itsukaichi, Hachikō, and Fujikyuko lines.

Testing a Fotodiox Nikon to Micro Four Thirds adapter.

behind the scenes

Even though we rushed to the concert to be there just when the venue was open to the public (first come first served seating), the best spot available was still wayyyy back in the last 1/3 of the audience. So ... at some point during the show (and after a long pep-talk to self), I finally got up enough courage to venture up the middle aisle, squeezing and excusing myself through hundreds of adoring fans while mentally fencing off all the dirty looks on the way. Needless to say, David Cook's fans were very obsessive of him! To each her own was pretty much the motto of the night!

Ah, if I were to search through my diary for the number of times that I swore up and down about this piece of **** that never did what I needed it to do--namely pump music into my brain while on the Grand Tour--I would lose count quickly.

This one summed it up:

After stumbling home, I lay out on my sofa until the nausea passed and I felt slightly more human.

I then tackled my Rio Karma, which faithful readers will remember is a piece of shit mp3 player whose hard drive stops working whenever it gets warm outside. Yesterday, it was warm. And on cue, it crapped out. So I set out to give the hard drive a good, hard whack, which is what tech support had told me previously to do. The outer shell, though, seemed to provide too much of a cushion, so I tore**** the damn thing apart.

With the hard drive suitably exposed, I gave it a good smack with the back end of a screw driver, and *poof* it started up again. Knowing full well that the thing is a piece of shit, though, I set about the process of getting all the music off of the player, reformat it, and then reload all my songs because I had stupidly deleted them all off my hard drive. Only my past abuse must have lead to some bad sectors because the backup of the music would crap out on certain songs, and thanks to the crappy software, the backup would die rather than just skip over that bad songs.

So a nice chunk of the day was taken up getting all the songs on the player backed up onto my hard drive, more or less one at a time in order to skip over the failures. Gotta love crappy software. And believe it or not, it wasn't even Microsoft!

So now I have my Rio Karma working again and naked. I kind of like it better this way. Makes it look like I built it from scratch!

(LCD screen view of uncropped image) An extraordinary photo of a meteor streaking over Harvard Square taken January 29, 2011. Photographer Brad Kelly was late for a movie in Harvard Sq. and instead managed to capture this rare photo of a meteor passing over Harvard University's Holyoke Center and the Cambridge Savings Bank building.

This is a cell phone snapshot of the lcd screen of my "real" Nikon camera showing the photo of the meteor over Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA, on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at approximately 8:29pm. I haven't transferred the photo from my camera's memory card yet.

I missed the movie I had been planning to see, so instead, I walked around Harvard Square with my camera and tripod taking some photos and I happened to get lucky with the camera in the right place at the right time. One in a million...

UPDATE:

In light of interest in this photo and inquiries from around the world asking me about the time and other details for scientific reasons way above my head mathematically and theoretically...

This may be helpful for you meteor tracking aficionados:

Time stamp info is not really crucial to my normal photography and when I noticed the neon bank clock in the photo reads 8:29pm and the time stamp 8:34pm I decided to check my camera's clock. This may be useful for your calculations/simulation:

The image stamp on the photo reads: 20:34:12 indicating a time of 8:34:12sec PM EST that the photo was taken. Most online meteor sighting reports in the area indicated a time closer to 8:30pm as the time of the widespread meteor sightings in the Massachusetts and surrounding New England areas on January 29th, 2011.

I checked my camera's clock against the The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) clock online and found that my camera is set 3 minutes and 25 sec FAST relative to the official NIST time.

Since it was an eight second exposure and since the Nikon D300 seems to time-stamp at the beginning of the exposure (I just ran a test on my camera to check that) it means that the meteor was visible over Harvard Square in Cambridge sometime precisely between 8:30:47sec PM EST and 8:30:55pm when I snapped the eight second exposure.

(For what it's worth, the Cambridge Savings Bank digital clock, clearly visible in the original hi-res photo, reads 8:29. So it is presumably at least 47 sec slow in relation to official NIST time!)

Note: I've marked on the map the approximate position in Harvard Sq. where my tripod was standing when I took the original photo.

Ultra big lcd screen for concert

The original Game Boy with one of the best games ever created.

I was totally blind taking this shot, like most my compact does not have a viewfinder, so I’m trying to look into a LCD screen but all I’m getting is a very bright reflection of my face. I just hit and hoped.

A Casio pocket television I got for Christmas 1985. Usless with today's digital TV signals, it picks up the only analog TV signal in my area, low-power WNAI-LP Channel 41 with Home Shopping Network. The LCD screen is in the lid and reflects, along with the tuning indicator, in the mirror below. There was an optional light that slid over the top if there isn't enough external light. The earphone cord is used as the antenna. The two AA batteries it uses only last about 4 hours.

Please see the camera-wiki article on the Pentax 645. This was a new concept to transfer ideas from 35mm cameras of the day into a medium-format negative size. Notably, programmed autoexposure is built in, as is a motorized winder and a top LCD. There is no modular removable prism or film backs, in the interest of compact size, although six AA cells are needed to make everything work.

The Pentax 645 lens series introduced for this camera would have a surprising second life in a 2010 medium-format digital (albeit with a crop factor around 1.27x).

As you can see, the sunlight does not diffuse, and the screen is very readable. The backlight is also set to minimum brightness. The picture would look essentially the same if the backlight was turned off.
