TAVOLA, ARGENTI, CUCINA - Tableware, Silver and Kitchenware

I started putting this bowl set together almost 2 years ago when I picked up the largest bowl (404). It is my absolute favorite set and I am SO happy to finally complete it! I ended up finding the last bowl (403) for under $20 on ebay including shipping, couldn't pass it up! The bowl was extremely well packaged and in awesome condition!

Seriously so happy :)

Marilyn is a tribute to the actress. As usual this sculpture consists of kitchenware. On a metallic structure, two sugar bowls globe in stainless steel were fixed, and look like breast.

I could not believe my eyes when I came upon these two bowls at a Volunteer's of America thrift store. As I got closer, I realized that for pink, they were in fantastic condition. After seeing the price, I felt faint. A 404 and a 403 for $4.97 and $3.97. Yes, please, I'll take two!

Maybe I should complain about not finding any Pyrex more often? :)

I love these various turned and carved bowls and spoons. No forks in the viking period except as skewers for cooking with.

I've seen lots of atomic starburst dinnerware patterns, but this one is by far the coolest! No maker's mark on the saucer though, and there were no matching pieces at the thrift shop. Any of you good vintage atomic fans have info?

(Sorry it's so dark...I had a hard time capturing the starbursts with or without the flash.)

Picked up this lovely promotional pyrex casserole today! It's an 043. They had the 045 too, but I left it behind. It's from a consignment shop so I figure I'll check back in a few weeks and maybe get it then, since prices drop 1% a day. They were a little pricey so I didn't want both :)

Pyrex has still be so sparse lately. I don't think I've even found 5 pieces since July.

Found these canisters marked "Heller Designs Inc." on the bottom. Set me back .49 cents each.

I need to go and find some of that "Goo-Gone" solution to help remove the sticky tag residue from the top of the caps.

Liked the way these looked and the price was right.

Not sure if Massimo Vignelli designed these as well. Will have to look it up later..

UPDATE: I found another smaller canister today in the same color - so I now have a set. : )

Susan left in such a hurry she forgot to take her Ice cream out of the freezer, and said we could have it. Result!

EDIT: I realise now that this day was Towel Day, in rememberance of Douglas Adams. In 2006 I participated, carrying my towel everywhere I went. But this year I was not a hoopy frood who knows where his towel is.

Old style hardware, homeware and kitchenware shop in central Teignmouth. With a huge B & Q superstore in nearby Newton Abbot for all D-I-Y and gardening needs and the even bigger Trago Mills complex closer still, not to mention Amazon and internet shopping I am amazed places like this are still going. The name of the shop is a nod to a famous UK comedy sketch by the Two Ronnies. Those that know will know. Otherwise check out You Tube.

Depression ware uranium glass on display under a black light. Some depression ware is uranium glass - so called because it contains trace amounts of uranium - and glows when illuminated by a "black light." And, yes, it is slightly radioactive.

Production was eventually discontinued in the 1940s when people began to express concern about being exposed to radiation. Huh.

Walking through the St. Lawrence Market in downtown Toronto this noon I noticed this pretty young woman working at a seafood business. The St. Lawrence Market is a large, busy, indoor market with vendors selling a wide variety of products including meat, seafood, baked goods, spices, nuts, kitchenware, the list could go on. The Market boasts that it was named "the world's best food market” by National Geographic in 2012. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Lawrence_Market_South)

The tight-packed crowds and dismal artificial lighting discouraged me from giving much consideration to Stranger photography even though I saw a few people who would have been candidates under better conditions. Before leaving the Market I found my thoughts drifting back to this vendor and the words from our website echoed in my head “The only stranger approach you will regret is the one you did not make” (or words to that effect).

I backtracked to the seafood area to once again review the situation and noted that while the light was purely artificial and pointed away from the staff in order to illuminate the seafood, there was enough light if I boosted my ISO. Rather than give up because the conditions were not ideal, I figured there was no harm in trying. Up with the ISO and on with the Stranger speech. Meet Sam.

I invited Sam to come closer to her side of the counter and asked if I could take her photo for my Flickr Strangers project. I told her I thought she was photogenic and would love to have her participate in my project. She gave me a shy “That’s ok,” I coached her to look into my lens, fired off a couple of photos and then since customers were seeking her attention, I thanked her warmly and moved on. I didn’t have a chance to give her my contact card but if you find your way to the photo, Sam, please email me for a copy of your photo.

I think Sam’s lovely smile and sparkling eyes made her a great subject and I'm glad my "second thoughts" told me to return and capture this portrait.

Thank you Sam, for participating in 100 Strangers. You are now Stranger #262 in Round 3 of my project.

Of all the wonderful tool makers of the world, Jernbolaget in Eskilstuna, Sweden was one of my favorites. Jernbolaget (or The Steel Company if you prefer the translated version) was much more than a tool maker. The company is mostly known as a large supplier of kitchenware, household items and cutlery. I don't own very much of their products, but the large cast iron kitchen scale is one of my favorites.

Older items normally display the full company name "Eskilstuna Jernmanufaktur AB" or "Eskilstuna Jernmanuf. Aktiebolag", later one's the abbreviated "Jernbolaget Eskilstuna".

The company symbol was an anchor and although it can at times be poorly stamped, it appeared on all their products, even down to the smaller chisels.

I have not sen a greta deal of hand tools from Jernbolaget, so I am uncertain about which types of woodworking tools they actually made.

At a later stage Jernbolaget exported their woodworking tools, some of them under the brand "Anchor". At this stage Jernbolaget also started making hand planes.

I have never seen or tried a Anchor hand plane, so I cannot say whether they were good or not. But the cutter ought to be excellent. The steel made by Jernbolaget was equal to that of Erik Anton Berg.
