Number five in this series features Stuart, a small Iowa town in Adair County with around 1,800 residents. The old downtown area in Stuart has some lovely historic buildings, with trendy retail shops and varied dining options. For example, Doe A Deer is a home goods store offering kitchenware, specialty foods and other gifts. Next door, the Maven Blush Boutique offers chic and stylish women's apparel and accessories.

Developed with Darktable 4.8.0.

About the series: Life in a small Midwestern town often means a slower pace of life, close-knit communities, and a strong connection to the land and agriculture. Residents typically have a strong sense of pride in their hometown and a friendly, neighborly attitude. Small towns usually have limited employment and entertainment options, but the tradeoff is typically a lower cost of living and a quieter, more peaceful environment. Presented in black and white at night, I hope to capture the essence of a few small Iowa towns in this series. Series Album: flic.kr/s/aHBqjBWTai

Do you remember the way the sun shined through the curtains while your mother whisked the batter for something delicious? And the pan was heating up, and summer was ending but everything was hopeful. Do you remember?

Pentax A 50mm f1.7.

A broken Pyrex measuring cup. I long ago lost track of how long I owned this cup, but it's been decades., possibly since the 1980s or early '90s. In any case, this was a true Pyrex cup, made before a later owner of the company changed the glass formulation.

Until its demise, I used this cup at least once a week to measure water for pancakes and coffee. Its looped handle allowed me to hang it within convenient reach of the water cooler. Unfortunately, after using it for a Flickr Fridays photoshoot last June, I fumbled the cup and it fell hard on the counter. Good thing I set aside the remains with the intention to use it someday for a photoshoot.

The Stainless sculpture by Judy Darragh

After visiting the LA Car Museum, Auckland artist Judy Darragh was so taken by the folly, and failure, of the DeLorean car, the time machine in the 1985 movie Back to the Future, she was inspired to create an exhibition based around its 'wonder material'. Darragh has created a playful, shiny world of make-believe that features intriguing, pulsating objects.

Largely using stainless steel kitchenware, Darragh strips colanders, bowls and measuring cups of their domestic role to form works that are not what they seem. Judy Darragh has long held a concern for the flagrant waste of the consumer society, and a passion for reusing and restoring unwanted materials in surprising ways. She is interested in the constant desire for abundance as well as ideas around failure, in manufacturing as well as our personal lives.

Dedicated to Artemis, the goddess of hunting and fertility and the daughter of Zeus and Leto, this temple was built between AD 150 and 170, and flanked by 12 elaborately carved Corinthian columns (11 still stand). The construction is particularly impressive given that large vaults, housing temple treasure, had to be built to the north and south to make the courtyard level. The whole building was once clad in marble, and prized statues of Artemis would have adorned the niches.

If you visit on a partly cloudy day, you’re in for a treat, as the sandstone pillars of the temple light up like bars of liquid gold each time the sun comes out. It’s a magical sight, and magic – or a sense of the world beyond – was exactly what the architects of this gem of a building would have been trying to capture in their design.

Alas, the edict of Theodorius in AD 386, permitting the dismantling of pagan temples, led to the demise of this once-grand edifice, as it was picked apart for materials to construct churches. The Byzantines later converted the site to an artisan workshop for kitchenware and crockery. In the 12th century the structure was temporarily brought back to life as an Arab fortification, only to be destroyed by the Crusaders.

If your energy is starting to flag, this is a good place to turn back. You can descend through the temple's gateway, the propylaeum. If you want to get a sense of the complete extent of Jerash, head towards the North Gate for further views.

The Torre dei Pallini in Trieste, the sad story of the historical monument that became an antenna holder

A cell phone repeater was installed on the shot tower and is still active, despite a petition to the contrary signed by residents and workers in the area.

The first building dates back to 1806 when Dioniggi Ciana (1752-1825), who arrived in Trieste in search of fortune, started the production of pewter, an alloy of tin and lead, used since the Middle Ages for table furnishings and utensils kitchenware (goblets, mugs, crockery). Subsequently, the production of hunting pellets also began, which had a strong impetus from Ciana's son, Giuseppe, who renovated the factory and also built a tower for pellets; the project was entrusted to the royal expert Angelo Toniutti in March of 1839. To produce the shot, molten lead was dropped from a height of 45 meters from the top of the tower, through different types of perforated copper plates depending on the size of the shot you wanted to obtain, during the fall the lead cooled and the pellets were collected in a tub full of water, then dried and checked.

Meat from cattle raised in a completely natural way in a pasture near Aldeanueva de San Bartolomé, in the region of "La Jara", province of Toledo, Spain.

Meats with an intense flavor and a pleasant surprise: cooked on the griddle at home, they released absolutely no water, unlike those meats bought in large grocery stores.

All my best wishes to José and Amelia, owners of the "DelirioRes" Livestock (deliriores.es/)

From time to time I like to challenge myself. In this case it was about photographing the steam given off by the water kettle.

For this I used a Nikon Z8 camera and a Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 75mm F1.5 II lens, which has completely manual operation, both in focus and diaphragm aperture.

Since the room was dark the exposure time was going to be longer than one second, in this case 1.6 seconds, I attached the camera to a tripod, used a remote shutter release and deactivated the IBIS stabilization.

I set the sensitivity to ISO 64

To illuminate the vapor trail beam I used an LED flashlight and opened the diaphragm halfway, at an aperture of F5.6.

At first I had used the maximum aperture (F1.5) but what occurs in many lenses of this type: a chromatic aberration towards a green tone.

The rest is a slight repair with Lightroom and Photoshop.

After nearly a year I try a relaunch. It's my personal favorite picture of my analog era.

Some well worn kitchenware.

Super-Multi-Coated MACRO-TAKUMAR 50mm f4 wide open.

"Jadeite, Jadite, or Jade-ite? No matter how you spell it, jadeite is that gorgeous green milk glass found in old homes, estate sales, flea markets and antique malls all over the U.S. and Canada. First created in the 1930s, jadeite is used for all types of things, but most commonly dishware and kitchenware. It first became popular in the Victorian era, then fell out of style for a time until World War II when glass companies found it could be stylish, plus affordable, to make. Now it’s trendy again."
